Today, we are visiting Mission Escape Games' new location in Midtown West in the Big Apple, New York City! Currently, they have three other locations in three different states: CA, PA and CT. This location is located conveniently near many different subway and bus lines. I would not suggest driving since parking will be difficult (although we found one right away because parking is free on Sundays in Manhattan!). As you exit the 8th Floor and enter their lobby, it’s very spacious and welcoming. You’ll probably be directed to sign the waivers with the iPads along the wall and then enjoy and wait for your party to arrive in private cubicles with puzzle games!
Previously we had tried one of their older games called “Escape The Hydeout” at their old location. We are very excited to play their newest game “Escape Operation: End of Days (A)” and boy what a step up from the previous! Right when you enter the room, the sound system, lighting and narration completely took us by surprise. The amount of lighting that they provided was just enough to create the “spook” feeling but still can see the puzzles easily. We liked the clever ideas of how different spaces were created within the room and the various surprises that caught us off guard. This is the first room where we didn’t have to actually guess where something opened, and we really appreciated that. All the puzzles were different in that they are not all brain puzzles and some we had to use a bit of our imagination. There was a particular puzzle that took some time for us to crack though if the clues used were more sticking to the storyline, it would be more impactful. Regardless, the puzzle flow was great throughout. There were things that a group can definitely divide and conquer. This room is pretty spacious so between the two of us we did escape with minutes left. Our suggested group size would be 4-5 people. We were hoping for a little more “excitement” with the ending part, but the overall experience was excellent that this little aspect wasn’t a big deal.
“Escape Operation: End of Days” has another identical room which if you are feeling competitive, definitely bring a group of friends and book both and see who can save the world quicker! Everything at Mission is build in-house with their team and the owner is a lover for video games himself. The inspiration behind this room was bringing some of the images from video games to life. It worked great in this lock-less game with special effects. We were told “Escape The Hydeout” had some updates so perhaps it was better than when we reviewed it. Lastly, we are looking forward to their new rooms (supposedly two more at this location) once it’s up and running!
