  • 13th Gate Escape - "Death Row"

LOCATION: Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA Photo above is property of 13th Gate Escape Photos above are property of 13th Gate Escape 📝  ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME: Death Row 📅 DATE PLAYED: March 26, 2024 🎬 GENRE: Prison Break 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 5 ppl): 6/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS: 4-9 ppl 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME: 60 Mins. 💰 PRICE: $32.00/ pp (Min. 4 ppl required) ☎️ BOOKING TYPE: Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED?: Yes [48:24] 📖 THE STORY Welcome to Cellblock E, where you find yourself awaiting your final moments in the electric chair due to overcrowding in the Louisiana State Penitentiary. Rumors swirl of an escaped convict who once occupied this very cell block. With your execution looming just 60 minutes away, can you follow in your old cellmate's footsteps and uncover a secret passage to freedom? Video above is property of 13th Gate Escape 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The room is visually striking, with multiple jail cells meticulously set up in the signature style of 13th Gate Escape. This attention to detail enhances the immersive atmosphere of the prison setting, drawing players deeper into the experience of another prison game. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK The game begins with your group separated into multiple cells, setting the stage for potentially intriguing communication puzzles. However, this aspect of the gameplay was underutilized, as there was only one such puzzle, and we were quickly reunited. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? "Death Row" at 13th Gate Escape offers an escape room experience tailored for those new to the genre, providing a glimpse into the puzzle-solving style characteristic of 13th Gate. The immersive set design is undeniably impressive, effectively transporting players into the grim atmosphere of a prison setting. Each detail, from the dimly lit cells to the clinking of chains, contributes to the overall ambiance, enhancing the sense of urgency and tension. However, while the environment succeeds in immersing players, the puzzles themselves lack the same level of depth and innovation. They feel somewhat formulaic and fail to leave a lasting impression or significantly advance the storyline. While there are moments of intrigue and challenge, they don't fully capitalize on the potential for immersive storytelling within the prison setting. Additionally, despite the intriguing premise of a prison break, Death Row struggles to stand out in a sea of similar escape room experiences. The theme feels somewhat overdone, and the game doesn't offer enough unique elements to distinguish itself from others in the genre. As a result, while Death Row provides a solid and enjoyable escape room experience, it ultimately falls short of being truly memorable or exceptional. • Escape Plan Ltd - "The Adventure Begins"

LOCATION: London, England, United Kingdom Photo above is property of Escape Plan Ltd Photo above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 📝  ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME: The Adventure Begins 📅 DATE PLAYED: March 7, 2024 🎬 GENRE: War, History 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 3 ppl): 5/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS: 2-6 ppl 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME: 75 Mins. 💰 PRICE: £28/ pp (£65 minumum) ☎️ BOOKING TYPE: Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED?: Yes 📖 THE STORY You are fighter pilots shot down and captured in 1941 and now imprisoned in a P.O.W. camp. Thankfully, you’ve made friends with a sympathizer who has agreed to provide a distraction for the guards while you try to escape! But their ploy will only occupy the guards for the next 60 minutes…you’d best hurry! You find the journal of Bob Hails’ - the only prisoner to ever successfully escape. Can it lead you to freedom? Photo above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE Escape Plan says they tend to design with enthusiasts in mind (though they have some ability to simplify gameplay for less experienced groups), and I enjoyed both the construction and solves of many of their puzzles! They’re known for creating many of their own wooden “combination” boxes and other tactile, mechanical components. For the most part, we found these to work very smoothly and be highly enjoyable. There was one puzzle in particular unlike anything I’ve seen. There are a fair number of traditional combo locks as well, but they are well sign-posted so as to determine which code belongs where. Our GM, Sarah, was also fabulous - providing an appropriate nudge where needed but not over-hinting. The story was inspired by the owners’ own family history; their grandfather was indeed a fighter pilot whose plan was brought down and subsequently escaped a P.O.W. camp during WWII. This personal component made what could feel dark or exploitative come across as heartfelt and respectful. The furnishings and environment (including the outer waiting area where you get your orientation) are all well-themed. The GM provides a number of low-tech effects to enhance the immersion in a charming way. Though, evidently I missed at least one, being too engrossed in a solve to pay sufficient attention to the environment. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK I misjudged a few times what was fair play - being too delicate in pushing on one piece (and assuming I needed to do something else to open it) and inadvertently getting into a real electrical box in the floor. (Thankfully, I asked to be sure before I started pulling on wires!) These things could both be fairly easily prevented with a little signage or info in the initial briefing. While I loved the origin of the story, as with many rooms, there was no real development over the course of the game. We were also told that we needed to block the doors whenever soldiers came knocking to check on us, which I didn’t totally understand within the story. I do enjoy this kind of extra component to feel a bit more immersed! However, we found it a bit confusing sometimes with the sound effects as to which times we needed to actually block the doors, and ended up doing it a few extra times. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? I’ll admit that the 1940's wartime theme didn’t initially appeal to me, and I might have passed it up if I hadn’t heard such great things about Escape Plan. But I’m so glad I went! I encourage you to give them a try, even if the theme isn’t quite up your alley (and all the more so if you’re a history buff). It’s a fun room for enthusiasts and can be simplified in some ways for newbies or family groups. While the setting is a P.O.W. camp, there is nothing that would be particularly unsettling for kids (aside from some loud noises). The highly tactile, mechanical components feel fresh and in line with the time period, the puzzles flow well, and the friendly staff help to bring it to life. A visit is definitely recommended if you’re in London! ℹ️  ADDITIONAL INFO Escape Plan is housed within Rich Mix, a non-profit artists’ collective of sorts, where you can also see films and other shows! It is just a couple minutes walk from the Shoreditch Tube Station. They are generally able to adjust their rooms to be wheelchair accessible (with the exception of their newest offering); contact them in advance to confirm. • Virtual Escaping - "Merlin's Castle"

Photo above is property of Virtual Escaping Company: Virtual Escaping Game: Merlin's Castle Country: Netherlands 🇳🇱 Language: English, Dutch Type of Game: Point-N-Click 🖱️ Genre: Fantasy Date Played: March 25, 2024 Difficulty (based on 1 player): 5/10 Size of Team: Up to 6 Devices Time: 100 Mins. (Recommended 60 Mins.) Price: $40.00 Check out our review(s) on other games from Virtual Escaping - "Underground Murder", "Expedition North Pole", "Artifact Isle", "Detention" and "The Saloon"! 🆃🅷🅴 🆂🆃🅾🆁🆈 Entering Merlin’s Castle, you and your group of adventurers have heard the legends and stories of the wonders hidden away there. Using your wits, knowledge, and cooperation, can you solve the riddles and puzzles to unlock the magic and mystery found in the castle? Video above is property of Virtual Escaping 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 Starting up the game, there were many options that could be set up. The first was if I wanted a timer set up that I would have to beat. The other was a full-on in-game messenger and video chat feature that could be used. This way, Zoom or FB Messenger would not be necessary to talk to the rest of the team. In this game, if you played with multiple people, you would all have access to the game, and if one person solved a puzzle, it would update for everyone. After doing all this, I watched an introduction video with great graphics that presented the game to me. The point-and-click style of the game was smooth and easy to play. One thing I liked was that once I solved a puzzle, a video interlude would play to confirm that it was correct. The sound effects add to the fun of the game as well. One tip is to take your time and click everything. I was caught a few times not knowing how to proceed, only to take a hint and realize I missed clicking something. Photos above are property of Virtual Escaping 🆃🅷🅴 🅿🆄🆉🆉🅻🅴🆂 Most puzzles required using the signs and books to guide you in solving them. All the puzzles were well thought out and fit naturally into the story setting. Some of the puzzle types included deduction and decoding ciphers. There was a lot of reading and lore to sort through, some that was not relevant to the puzzles but added depth to the world of Merlin. Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🅲🅻🅾🆂🅸🅽🅶 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 "Merlin’s Castle" was an enjoyable point and click game. The quality graphics and videos enhanced the immersive experience. The puzzles were fun to complete and were a satisfying mix of different challenges. Though there was not a lot of story at the beginning, as I dove deeper into the text, I could find a lot of lore to explore. Any medieval or magic fan would have fun with this game. I played on my own but found that even for up to 4 people, it would be an entertaining experience.
