Ocean State Escape is a newly opened escape room in Johnson, Rhode Island. There’s plenty of parking when you arrive. You will need to climb up a set of stairs to get to the entrance. The lobby felt like we’ve just entered an aquarium. The nice turquoise paint with ocean themed props for décor created a calming and joyful ambience for the players prior to the exciting game action. There’s a large event room which can accommodate corporate gatherings or family functions. Currently they have just one operating escape room, but many are in the making.

When we first heard of the name of this escape room “Nonna’s house”, we thought it was going to be a horror-themed room (reminded us of the movie - "The Visit"), but apparently, Nonna means Grandma in Italian. We definitely recommend this room for family fun times and our recommended team size is 3-4 people. The storyline was that our Grandma had gone missing and something was wrong and we were sent into her house to find out what had happened. The set design was pretty much a replica of what you would find at your grandma’s house. The attention to detail not only was on the props but also on the wall decors. We liked the different kind of uses with the props to create puzzles as they were all reasonably in line with the story. There was a lot to do in the first part of the game which had led us to believe we were pretty much at the end but boy were we wrong. You should pace yourself evenly through the beginning and end parts of the game. The latter part of the décor felt a little less prepared than the beginning part. It would be great to see some more “hidden” elements with more “wow” effects.

Ocean State Escape is a family business and they are extremely friendly. If you have played there before and did not complete the room, they would allow you to finish it with extra time or for free again next time pending on your availability with time. They are all enthusiasts of escape rooms and we can feel the love that they pour into their games. We can’t wait to return during Christmas as I think “Santa” is making a nice present for us in his shop right now!
