We also reviewed the newest game, "The Exorcism of Isabelle" in their puzzle book series. Similar to their digital games, there's usually an intro video or a conclusion video or both. As stated in our previous reviews on the digital games , we really enjoyed this story presentation format.
Game: The Panic Room
Genre: Sci-Fi
Difficulty (based on 2 players): 8/10
The Story: Our mission was to uncover the conspiracy about the UFO. We needed to find its location and by transmitting a radio message, we might even be able to hijack the alien ship!
Once you purchase the game, you'll receive a PDF file that'll give you access to different websites and puzzle pages. We recommend that you print everything out as the clues were embedded on every page and it was quite difficult to keep scrolling up and down to associate them all together. A hint page was also provided. If your phone could scan QR code, it'll make life much easier to open up links.
If you like deciphering codes and symbols, you'll really love this game. It was great to be able to see ciphers being created in various ways (video, imagery, symbols). There was an online portal you'll be able to input all the answers once they are discovered from the puzzle pages. The portal felt like an actual dash board of a computer screen with accompanied sound effects. It was quite easy to use to enter the location and activation sequence of the UFO on. There were many multi-step puzzles and a cut out puzzle that stumped us for awhile. The game really tested your ability to associate various clues together and was probably the hardest in terms of puzzle difficult level we've played out of all of Panic Room's games so far. If you like a challenge, definitely give this one a try!
Game: The Book of Orion
Genre: Fantasy
Difficulty (based on 2 players): 7/10
The Story:
We found one of Brothers Grimm's journal! He had left coded messages for us and we love to figure out what secrets were hidden behind his fairy tales.
I'm a huge fan of all fairy tales. The artwork for this game really caught my attention. I love the colors (although it's definitely a lot of ink usage if you are planning to print them all. We only printed 2 pages out of PDF file) and the different characters being portrayed in the story line. From the big bad wolf to the dwarfs to the frog princess, there were many exciting moments to discover. Unlike the previous game, you'll be getting a bit of a guidance with this game but you'll still need to be able to recognize the clue that brings together the different puzzle pieces. There's a hint page if you get stuck. You'll be able to enter the answer on a website portal. We love the way they design the answer portals as they are always able to relate it closely to the story line. In this case, it felt like we were actually typing onto a page in the story book. Our favorite part was the secret revealed at the end. It added a nice twist to the usual fairy tale happy ending.
Game: The Exorcism of Isabelle
Genre: Horror
Difficulty (based on 2 players): 6.5/10
The Story:
Our friend sent us some disturbing documents he found while searching on the history of the house he recently purchased. Previous owners have died mysteriously while digging for information. There seems to be a possessed doll and in order to save our friend, we needed to find out the 9 demon names that's possessing the doll and exercise them forever...
We reviewed the online PDF version of this game but you'll actually receive a spiral bounded puzzle book when you purchase the game. The content is meant to look like your friend left you all the clues he found about the house which included hand written notes, drawings, photographs, newspaper clipping etc..You'll also receive a website and an interactive portal where you'll be able to enter the demon names. There's a hint page if you ever get stuck.
I had goosebumps before even starting the game. The creepy drawings and old photographs definitely added an eerie vibe to the story line. Every time when we entered a demon's name into the portal, the sound would make me jump. Since the game was not linear, we were able to tackle different puzzles at the same time. This game was a lot easier than the two print and cut games mentioned above. From an immersive stand point, this was definitely our favorite out of the three. We really enjoyed the graphics (simple yet haunting) and the story line that tied everything together. If you are looking for a puzzle to do on a sleepless night, this might be the one you want to investigate....
