📖 THE STORY

It's unpossible not to love "The Simpsons", so when we heard about a Simpsons-themed escape room, created by no less than the master TV culture artists at Trivia Escape Rooms, these "fun boys" decided to go get themselves a booking and to take a gleeful stroll down nostalgia lane and put their trivia knowledge to the test. The room - named "Bobo's Bounty" - is based on the golden era Simpsons episode "Rosebud", which for the non cinephiles, is a play on the classic movie Citizen Kane, specifically the main character's titular cherished snow sled named "Rosebud". In this case it is a cherished and forgotten bear, Bobo, symbolic of Montgomery Burns nostalgia for the more innocent and carefree days of his youth, lost during his rags to riches rise, which parallels and parodies Kane's own emotional journey back to his beloved Rosebud. In the episode, during a spell of anhedonia and malaise, Burns recalls the lost bear, wishing to be reunited with what he claims now was the only thing that ever made him happy. Except he abandoned it long ago, only for it to now somehow end up, after a long and improbable journey, in the hands of Maggie, who has presumably hidden it within the Simpsons house. Burns is willing to pay handsomely anyone who can find and return him his precious lost bear, so it's up to you to find Bobo and collect Burn's bounty!

🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE

  • God I love "The Simpsons", it is the perfect theme for a TV culture room. Experiencing this room was a Proustian moment that brought on a recollective flood of special memories. I just loved the challenge of plumbing the depth of my brain to remember a show I loved so fondly. It was all so fun and warm and nostalgic.

  • The rooms were a labor of love and a work of art, and a trove of memorabilia and references.

  • The puzzles were cleverly constructed and did a great job of incorporating Simpsons trivia and lore. There was enough for everyone to work on, and the room had a good flow to it.

  • The music speaker hint system works well at helping the game move along, as well as also being a great atmospheric backdrop. The host knew just when the group needed a little nudge to help us move forward.

  • Full disclaimer: you don't actually need to know anything about the Simpsons to enjoy and complete the room, in fact it could very well serve as a great first contact for this cultural touchstone. On the other hand it does help, as a lot of the puzzles are unsurprisingly based on the more popular of Simpsons references.

🧩 MISSED THE MARK

  • It's cleverly done but low tech, and still generally reliant on codes and locks. So don't expect any highfaluting gizmos or gadgets. That being said they did a good job though with the props and forming puzzles out of them in ingenious ways.

  • Knowing Simpsons trivia could to a degree be a limiting factor, but who doesn't know the Simpsons. Maybe that's a reason to get on your duff and spend some magical hours revisiting the series, it might just culturally embiggen you, and that's a perfectly cromulent take!

  • All the time I was thinking to myself: they have a speaker giving us audio clips and clues, but why don't they have a TV to show us the actual clips, given how great the visuals are. I think that's something they should implement going forward.

🏹 TAKE A SHOT?

Pound on the table yes. These folks are doing great work, and I think the room is fun as hell, for both the enthusiast and for those peculiar individuals who didn't spend their entire childhood watching the Simpsons. For enthusiasts you will relish the sublime feeling of recalling those golden memories, and for the more initiate type, you will get the very best Simpsons education money can buy. They manage to pack in a lot of nifty puzzles and props and to traverse an impressive amount of popular Simpsons lore. The space is also a work of art and a wonder to behold. The hosts too are quite fun and attentive stewards, you'll be in good hands.
