This time, we came back with our two friends to tackle their most difficult room together. Once again, there were a lot of puzzles to solve. One of us got the three clues on their own, while the others searched the room and started to tackle the puzzles. Although the 3 hints definitely came in handy, we wasted way too much time in the beginning and ended up completing only 50% of the room. I think the "Poker Room" definitely needs six people or more to be able to get close to the finish line. We felt that with the difficulty level of this room, hints should be just given from the start instead of having to earn them. This room only has a 5% escape rate so I definitely encourage the experts to challenge this. The design of the room was quite clever as there's always a surprise factor one after another. There were some red herrings in the room but they can be easily spotted. We really enjoyed this room and was hoping we can see the end but they do not reveal anything further in hopes that you'll return and attempt it again. We attempted to escape the "Backstage" room with our sister and two other people that decided to join the room w/ us. Since this was our third time at Escape AC, we anticipated that there was going to be a lot of puzzles to solve. Again, the 3 hints are unlocked based on 3 clues that you need to solve within the game. We felt immersed right away as if you were part of a show. The room was dim lit which made a lot of the puzzles harder to see. There were a few cleverly used props and puzzles with lights which we haven't seen before and it definitely challenged our memory. We enjoyed this room as well as each of their room gave us a unique puzzle experience. It was a bit tricky to find as it's in the lower level of the casino, but it's quite big in there so make sure you leave ample time to locate it. The lobby is clean and has some comfortable sofas in the waiting area. If they have two groups at the same time they may ask one to step outside so that they can explain the rules to the other one first. We were lucky to get the room privately with just the two of us. Although "Casino Cage" is the smallest room there, it was definitely challenging with two people as there's a lot of puzzles to do. However, we were just shy of one puzzle from successfully escaping. I would say ideally four people would be a good number for this room. This room had a lot of linear puzzles with mostly locks, but there was a clear storyline which we liked that told the story of how a casino cage functioned and the set design was also pretty immersive. Everything was very well maintained in there. If you go with two people, they will be able to give you your three clues right away. But if you go with more than two people, you will actually have to solve puzzles to earn your clues which will take away some of your time from the actual game so just beware of that. If you have more people, someone should definitely work on earning the clues as the others search for and work on the actual puzzles in the room. We are excited to try out their other rooms when we return next time. There's no elevators so you will have to climb up 2 flights. There's a few parking lot in front with a few spaces. We went at night so we're not sure how busy it gets during the day. The lobby is a small waiting area with not much decor. Our game master came promptly and took us to the room. The design of the room was quite basic w/ a room full of puzzles, however it did try to stick with the storyline. We felt that a few items in there definitely needed updating as one of the puzzle pieces fell off of the wall and we pretty much had to guess the answer. This room was also very linear but having more people would at least be useful at finding the hidden clue pieces. We missed a few obvious pieces which delayed our gameplay a bit. Read our review on the “Amazing Adventure Society: The Forgotten Room” room to learn more about their location. The Other Tales - Escape Rooms was an escape room company that we visited earlier on in our ESCAPETHEROOMers career. They are one of our favorite locations in the Northern New Jersey area. The owners are puzzle enthusiasts themselves and the rooms tend to be a bit more challenging on puzzle design side. We are excited to be back to try their newest room - “The Anomaly” and see where this adventure takes us. We were debriefed in front of a travel agency which is really just a cover-up for a special agency that analyzes strange disappearances of objects and people. They have just recently reported an incident of loud sounds and lights coming from one of the offices and we were sent here to investigate. The room is extremely “neat” when you enter. It’s as if you entered a blank slate. It’s also quite linear so if you don’t find the starting point you’ll be stuck for some time. I do believe that was our mistake as we took too long to start and didn’t have enough time at the end. There was a lot to do in the room, so definitely pace yourself (even though it may not seem so at the beginning). In comparison to their first room, they definitely raised the bar in terms of the incorporation of technology. It made perfect sense since this room takes place in a sci-fi futuristic world. There is a good mix of simple puzzles and ones that you really need to layer through to get the answer. We did have an issue with the hint system as we couldn’t really hear to clearly on the mic of what was told to us. It would be more immersive if the hint system could be incorporated through an intelligence machine of some sort and told through there instead of the speaker into the room. Also, some incorporating some music ambience could also contribute to the immersive experience especially when the storyline had that element to it. We do love the “step-by-step” feel of solving a puzzle and discovering a new one but for a larger group this could be an issue since they can only work on one challenge at a time. In this case, you might need the extra brain power to get through the more challenging puzzles. There was a few props used in this room that we’ve never encountered before which was entertaining. Our recommended size for this room is 4 people. Since The Other Tales Escape Rooms is located in an office building and there’s not much they can do in terms of space utilization, we were glad they were able to incorporate as much as possible. Both rooms were great at the puzzle design elements, but it still felt like they were both set in an office setting and lacked the general “wow” moments of new discovered dimensions. We are excited to see what the future holds for them in a new location that would allow them to let their imaginations run wild. From what you've heard from the villagers, this cottage usually would be filled with laughter as many fairytale characters would enjoy their stay here. Today feels very different. It seems like someone had cast a spell on the cottage. Everything was frozen. Can you help to make the cottage come alive again? 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The story made us into the writers that controlled the fate of this cottage. We actually felt like we were writing the chapters of this book as we played through the puzzles. We really enjoyed the usage of lights as guidance as it made the room feel magical. They were helpful in terms of getting the attention of the players but also provided those surprising moments. Instead of having one person read the story, the room also provided prerecorded audio which played simultaneously as we found the written pages. This really enforced the entire team to hear everything and proceed together. The game flow was great. We never doubt which puzzle to solve next, what locks to open with which puzzle and everything had a flavor of a fairytale but with an added twist from "The Other Tales". 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Some visual puzzles might be easier for some people and might be difficult for others. If there could be a way to put them on a certain prop that is relevant to the puzzle to have a confirmed visual, it would work best with all the players. One of the props could be redesigned to fit onto another prop and make the operation process easier for the player. The locks in this room were the only thing that could be a little bit more "magical". Perhaps decorating them or using mag locks with a wand to open some could be an option? 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? We were surprised by the story and puzzles "The Other Tales" was able to fit into this single small-sized room. They offered many multi-step puzzles that could easily have groups work on together. I love how we were able to find classic escape room puzzles in the room but clearly knowing that they had an "Other Tales" touch. Ultimately our rescue mission was a success and the ending was stitched beautifully together for a winter miracle. Immediately after successfully escaping their "Time Machine Trouble" room in Collingswood, we raced over to their Glassboro location which was about a 24 minute drive. The Glassboro facility is their newer location and it's in a great area with plenty of restaurants and stores on the same block (there's also a VR Arcade company right next door). There was plenty of parking available on the same block. Compared to their Collingswood location, this lobby was a lot bigger and updated. They also have merchandise available for sale (games, t-shirts, etc.). We were fortunate enough to meet with the general manager to learn more about the company and the other four escape rooms that they currently offer. The one that we are trying is the "Ben Franklin's Inferno" room. The room design had some pretty decor and was built to accommodate the storyline. They have two locations in New Jersey - Collingswood & Glassboro. We are trying one room at each of their locations starting with "Time Machine Trouble" at their Collingswood location. There was plenty of metered parking spaces in the back of the facility which is located on the first floor of a galleria mall. They just recently expanded and now currently have four rooms available. When you enter the galleria, there's a long pathway that connects to the other street so you can enter from either Haddon Avenue or North Atlantic Avenue. When we entered, we noticed that the lobby/ waiting area was a little bit on the small side. They have merchandise available for sale (games, t-shirts, etc.). The "Time Machine Trouble" room was cleverly designed and a nice tribute to the past. You don't need to know your history in order to solve the puzzles. The puzzles were linear and consistent with the storyline. This room was definitely created for people who love to read and search for clues. They provide you with a notepad and we highly recommend that you use it. We are now off to try their other room - "Ben Franklin's Inferno" at their Glassboro location. Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE This game felt very futuristic in its design. The robots, "aliens" and the props all felt like a scene from a "Star Wars" movie set. The goal of the game was quite clear from the beginning. We needed to search for puzzle pieces in order to get to the final meta puzzle. The puzzle design was built around this core concept. The mini-puzzles that we had to solve were all quite different and varied in terms of difficulty level. One of my favorite puzzles involved Math but I'm sure some of you will not feel the same way. Our gamemaster was great at giving us hints promptly and was very clear but clever at the clues which enhanced our game flow. This game had a joyful ending that actually made us feel like saviors. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK We spent a good amount of time on one of the puzzles that couldn't be solved until way later on in the game. The access to this clue was released too early during the gameplay. Perhaps adding some music would enhance the experience. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This is the last of the 6 games we have played at Exit 4 Escape Rooms (we played 4 at Delran and 2 at Toms River). Since we played them back-to-back, we were definitely warmed up at this point. We spent about 30 minutes or so and completed the game with the two of us. I'm not saying this is an easy game but it was the smoothest in terms of game flow for us (the only clue we used was a freebie item that we couldn't find). Calling all Star Wars fans! This is the game for you. Or if you love any type of Sci-Fi, you'll likely be entertained by the props and puzzles in this game. Check-in was quite easy but you quickly realized why the booking price was so cheap. You just became a guest at a haunted hotel! Will you be able to check out? Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE Before we even entered the room, I already felt chills down my spine as besides the dimly lit atmosphere, the spontaneous sound effects from our "helper" definitely added unpleasant vibes to this "beautiful" resort. The set design made the room feel bigger than it was. There was an elevator, a lobby, and even multiple rooms. Our gamemaster was great at giving us hints promptly and was very clear but clever at the clues which enhanced our game flow. Two of our favorite puzzles were the clues given from the phone. We thought those were different and used very well along the storyline. Some props that were commonly seen at a hotel were cleverly utilized in the puzzle designs. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK We are still unsure of the storyline. Was the main character actually trying to help us? Why was he there in the first place? This wasn't made clear to us. The final visual puzzle was difficult to associate with what we had to use to find the solution as it didn't really look like the actual prop. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? Although I have not seen the movie "The Shining" (I know I know, it's a must-watch classic), Brandon has. He said there were a lot of references to the movie in this room. I guess maybe in order to understand the storyline, I might have to go watch the movie. The atmosphere was quite eerie but it was not really a scary room (there weren't even any jump scares). Some puzzles in this room involved fun logic that we haven't seen used much in the other Exit 4 Escape Rooms. It has been great to be able to play all of the rooms at their Delran location and here (find the other reviews on our website) as they were all quite different. The first puzzle brought "magic" into the game right away. It was a great way to capture our interest. The puzzle designer used every inch of the room possible to create various types of puzzles that involved visualization, logic, and finally sprinkled with a little magic. The "visual aid" in the room was nice to have as the storyteller. It would have been nice if the clue system could be given that way as well. Puzzle lovers would be in for a treat in this room. There was puzzle after puzzle that needed to be solved and at one point we even worried about finishing in time. There was a cool decoder puzzle that we hadn't seen used in many escape rooms before. It was quite a reveal once we realized how to use it. This room had a clear and conclusive finale. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK The usage of the wands in this game felt like "trial and error" as sometimes we would just need to hold one but sometimes we would need to hold multiple. If an instruction clue could be left from the start of the game it would be able to clear this confusion. There was a clue for a puzzle towards the end that was confusing. We were unsure if it was supposed to be interpreted in a mathematical way or a descriptive way. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This room had a lot going on right from the beginning. If you haven't played escape rooms before, you might feel a little overwhelmed. Our advice to you is to really examine the room and make sure you remember as much as you can. You never know when you might have to use something later on. In our opinion, this is the hardest room they have at the location so definitely warm up to this room with their other games. This room is also my favorite game at this location probably due to the theme (I'm a big Harry Potter fan) and also the creativity of the puzzles. If you think you are good at spells and want to bring out your inner wizard, definitely check out this room at Exit 4 Escape Rooms! You just returned a tape to a video rental store but suddenly remembered you forgot to rewind the tape! Rewind fees are pretty outrageous so you must try to get the tape out somehow before the store opens in an hour! Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The storyline and set design brought back a lot of memories from the 90s. Remember "Blockbuster"? Do kids these days even know what VHS is anymore? We also enjoyed the humor components such as rewinding video tape fees, funny VHS commercials, etc... The goal of this room was not to escape but to break in instead. It was quite enjoyable to reverse the concept for once. The puzzle designer was able to implement some really creative visual ways for the clues and solutions in this game. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Some props were used multiple times as input or clue devices. We were unsure at one point if we still needed to go back to a certain item or not. The hint system had some preset messages but they were not really relevant to what we were asking. It's best if the hints could be customized instead as this could cause delays in the game process. The last puzzle was confusing as the clues it was using had several red herrings in the room. We were unsure what we were supposed to use to solve the puzzle. There were several approaches that could be used to get to various solutions. The ending could have had a "sound of victory" as once the mission had been completed, there was a bit of waiting time for the game master to come into the room and we were unsure if the game had ended or not. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This was a linear game but during the game, you'll encounter information gathering that would require teamwork. My favorite parts of the game were the moments when we discovered the visual reveals. The venue considers this room to be their easiest game so we started with this one and played the rest of them back-to-back. You'll be able to search our website to find the rest of the reviews. If you are new at escape rooms, we suggest you start with this game. We love the story concept and wish there would be more unique themes like this from Exit 4 Escape Rooms in the future! Little did you know you've actually stepped into Pine Barrens, the birthplace of the Jersey Devil! Can you break the curse and leave this place alive? Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The set design gave us an eerie vibe right when we stepped into the dim light cabin. We really appreciate that Exit 4 Escape Rooms always keep impairment concerns as part of their design. All of their buttons would voice out what they are. For example the colors, words, etc...This also really helped in this room since the lighting was quite dark and we didn't have to be confused with the button colors. There were special sound effects and lighting that brought out the immersion. It had us believe we were locked up in a creepy cabin in the middle of nowhere. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK The start of the game needed either a video or story clue. We were unsure why we had to complete the first puzzle the way it was supposed to be done other than just giving it a try. This also stopped the flow of the game since the game is linear. This room had a lot of buttons which kind of didn't go with the theme of the room. Moreover, the buttons sometimes had to be pressed separately and sometimes together. This was also a "trial and error" type of decision. One of the puzzles had a specific clue on the wording that made us follow it to the tee. The solution also needed to be exact as well but if done according to the wording of the clue, it wasn't giving us the correct solution. The wording of the clue needs to be changed. Some props needed a bit of updating. It would be great if the placing of the final piece could be paired with some sort of music or video to symbolize the lifting of the curse of the Jersey Devil. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? If you enjoy a little bit of a jump scare, you might want to give this "horror-themed" room a try. It's definitely not as scary as it sounds but this is the only "horror" game at this location. If you're not used to playing in a dimly lit room, you might find searching for clues a bit more difficult in this game. One thing we wish the designer would change is the use of buttons. There were a lot of them in this room used as the input device and it just didn't go with the set design or storyline. Being in Jersey, this is a perfect local theme for the adventurous. If you think you're brave enough to put an end to the Jersey Devil curse, you should gather up your myth-buster teammates now! Most of the puzzles were multi-step puzzles. A lot of times we thought we knew the answer right away but it was only half of the puzzle. We really appreciate that Exit 4 Escape Rooms always keep impairment concerns as part of their design. All of their buttons would voice out what they are. For example the colors, words, etc...This also really helped in this room since the lighting was quite dark and we didn't have to be confused with the button colors. There was a special way the second door was triggered as most doors just simply open but we actually felt like we assembled a mechanism that "opened" this door. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK The first room felt like it could use a couple of more puzzles or clues as it was quite a good amount of space and not as much usage as the rest of the room. The usage of the buttons in this room felt like "trial and error" as sometimes we would have to press them together and other times separately. The ending needed some sort of confirmation music or video so we could feel the conclusion to the storyline. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? A pirate-themed escape room is one of the most popular choices for players and we can totally relate. Who doesn't want to traverse through the deep sea and search for some treasures? The game is pretty linear so if you get stuck on one puzzle, make sure you ask for a hint right away as there are a good amount of puzzles in this game. This room also had the most storytelling than all the other rooms at this location. So if your group can't decide on which theme, this might be a good solution for everyone. A local nurse Emily came to the rescue and offered to let us use her phone at her house. After we got to the house, we realized that we were locked in and the horror stories started to unveil… We have to get out of the house before we become her next victims! 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE Like the “scenery” switch ups throughout the story. Crafty way of incorporating the past victim’s clues and how we can utilize it to complete a puzzle set. We enjoyed a puzzle with great use of sound and visuals. This helped to create the “killer” scene for the goal of the room. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Add some sound element throughout the room would help with the suspense feel. We are not really fans of Escape Reality’s clue system. In a way, they may think it’s quicker to use the iPad but, in some situations, it doesn’t resolve the issue. Also, every time you use it, they penalize you on the time. We had already solved a puzzle and a cabinet was supposed to open. It did not make a sound or pop open, so we had no idea we already solved that puzzle. We wasted a clue and time just to confirm that we did it correctly but still nothing happened in the room. Eventually, we had to call the game master to come to the room just to tell us that the cabinet was open. There are no communication devices inside the room to talk with the game masters.  Hopefully they can change this clue system in the future as the anticipation for the game master to come into the room for something like this would probably frustrate a player since it’s not really a “clue”. - UPDATE: Escape Reality Las Vegas has changed their clue system. Now microphones are installed in all the rooms and all clues are sent directly to the Ipad and players no longer have to scan QR codes. Game masters no longer have to come into the room to give clues. In the latter part of the game, the set design felt a little bland in compare to the former ones. Maybe some decor on the walls would help. The ending could use a bit more “wow” element. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? If you like a mixture of Crime Scene Investigation and horror, you’ll enjoy this room.  The puzzles are not really difficult so you can easily attempt this as your beginner escape room adventure. Our recommended size for this room is 2-3 people. Let us know if you escaped the evil nurse! Escape Reality has 7 rooms at this location, and we got to peek in “Down the Rabbit Hole”. The set design looked amazing and we can’t wait to go back to explore a different realm. 🔎 HINT Sequence does matter.
