We enjoyed the way we were bought into the game (although I am hoping the items used on us were sanitized especially during the COVID times). The game started us in separate cells and we really enjoyed working together to set ourselves free. The ambient lighting, props, and special effect in this room was on par with feeling like we were in Harry Potter world. There was one "spell" that we had to do to escape the cell that "wowed" us. We were thinking in our minds: "There's no way that's going to happen...". There was an alchemy transformation that fit perfectly with the story. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK A puzzle that required a lot of agility was extremely difficult for us because we couldn't see what we had to avoid as the "special effect" had worn off. We didn't get a "refill" for a very long time. This puzzle also took up most of our time during the game. The latter part of the game felt a lot quicker and before we knew it, it was already over. The solution to two of the puzzles felt like giveaways. We didn't feel like we solved anything. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? The creators did a great job with creating magical moments in this game. From the start, our escape was different than a normal prison escape since we possessed powers. The entire game experience was focused on that fundamental element. The only complaint is that the game felt a little too short. While there weren't many jump-scare moments, those included were executed skillfully. We felt that dimmer lighting could have further enhanced the effect. The creators structured the game like chapters in a horror TV series, with each chapter offering unique puzzles that engaged different senses. This aspect was particularly enjoyable. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK A particular audio clue was repeated during the game. Its initial use did not seem to lead to a solution, which caused some confusion, while the second instance was relevant to solving a puzzle. Perhaps use two different songs? A visual clue presented in the latter part of the game was unclear, as it suggested the possibility of more inputs than those actually available. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? When it comes to escape room set design, we absolutely love the eerie and horror themes! Even though I'm a total scaredy-cat and prefer no live actors, there's just something irresistibly thrilling about horror movies and that spine-chilling vibe that draws me in. Deep down, I'm thinking, "Are you crazy? Why would you want to step into a pitch-dark room?" But The Asylum had me hooked right from the start with its "inviting" elevator. Once you're in, there's no turning back! Having a group made it a bit easier, as everyone contributed to balancing out the scare factor. You'll become familiar with your station, but you might miss out on the broader game settings. Some players might find this repetitive. We felt that we weren't solving puzzles; instead, we were following instructions and completing tasks. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? For some escape room enthusiasts, this game might not feel like a traditional escape room. It exudes more of a video game vibe. One of our players took charge of controlling the ship from the central helm area, while the rest of us dashed to various stations, mostly sticking to those nearby. Although I wasn't sure what my teammate was doing across the room, he knew exactly what needed to be done to accomplish the task. Some players may favor this type of "instructional" gameplay, and it certainly incorporates elements of collaboration. However, in terms of the puzzles we typically encounter in escape rooms, this game was lacking. The game’s goal isn’t immediately obvious as the game begins; we would only learn what it was several minutes later. From that point the goal remains the same, and although there are no twists or unexpected occurrences with the story, the way it unfolds is captivating. Along the journey we are lucky enough to meet several familiar characters, that both help and hinder our progress towards achieving our goal (sorry, no spoilers). Although I wouldn’t classify the characters as being actor-led, they are interactive and whimsical; further deepening your level of immersion. The game’s biggest success is certainly the way it looks and feels. The décor is rustic and thematic, with authentic props that lend themselves perfectly to the fairytale world. Integrated within the set’s construction are numerous lighting and sound special effects that are triggered at just the right moments. I remember thinking, midway through, how clever the effects are because they almost dictate the pace of the game, acting as a kind of buffer, preventing you from going too fast and almost forcing you to pause from time to time, allowing you to appreciate and soak up the atmosphere around you. The place is bursting with things to see and touch, so these moments were appreciated and calming. When summarizing the puzzles, words such as amusing, light-hearted, or simply ‘fun’, spring to mind. This is a game that does not take itself too seriously and you will realize this with almost every task you are asked to do. There are of course, still elements of deduction and logical, and searching involved, but nothing that detracts from the story or theme. A small thing, but worthy of praise, nonetheless… padding! The game does involve a small amount of crawling on a couple of occasions and it was great to see that they had padded the flooring, so no sore knees for me! 🧩 MISSED THE MARK This is an almost perfect game for us, we loved so much about it. However, the only thing that falls short is the lack of any truly cooperative puzzles. I believe it would be possible to actually complete this game solo. We always like to have some elements that require us to cooperate and communicate effectively to solve puzzles, and whilst there are moments to collaborate, they aren’t actually essential to the game play. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? Deciding whether to play the game is straightforward — of course, you should! The real question is how to approach it, especially given the hefty price tag of 230 CHF, regardless of your group size. To make the best decision, you'll need to balance the cost against your desired in-game experience. Group Size and Cost: **Two/Three Players** Costs 115/77 CHF per person. This setup ensures a more intimate experience, allowing players to fully engage with the game and solve puzzles without feeling cramped or rushed. **Four to Six Players** Bringing more people can further reduce the individual cost, but this may impact the quality of your experience. Larger groups might find the rooms crowded and the puzzles less engaging due to limited participation opportunities. **Our Experience** We opted to play as a duo and found this to be an excellent choice. The game's smaller room sizes and straightforward puzzles were well-suited to two players, allowing us to enjoy a fully immersive and cooperative experience without feeling overwhelmed or constrained. Ultimately, you need to decide what matters more to you: minimizing cost or maximizing your in-game experience. If you value a more personal and engaging experience, smaller groups are the way to go, even if it means paying a bit more per person. If budget is your primary concern, larger groups can help reduce individual costs, but be prepared for a potentially less immersive experience. The story is prevalent throughout, providing an immersive experience with special effects that wow and impress. The puzzles fit the theme and have a logical flow. We always appreciate puzzles that require more than one team member to complete, and this room has several of those. There are numerous elements of searching that allow you to spend more time appreciating the set design. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK There’s not too much to dislike in this room. As an experienced team we might have appreciated more challenging puzzles, but that is a personal preference. The chef is situated in a couple of the rooms, but only on a TV screen. The effect of his presence was therefore lost quite quickly. One way to elevate the experience and to heighten the tension would be to have a live actor. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This is a game which has a high level of synergy between the story and the puzzles, so despite its relative level of ease, it should satisfy all levels of experience. We were greeted by the school’s Headmaster who escorted us to our room and disciplined us for being unruly students. The actor did a great job staying in character and responding on point to our humor. A tense atmosphere is present, though it is not one of horror, but one of suspense, with the occasional scare to keep the adrenaline flowing. We found the puzzles to be very thematic and particularly enjoyed those which required teamwork to complete. We loved how they took us on a journey through many parts of the monastery, including a brief stint outside. The ending was well done and successfully closed the story loop, we exited with a smile on our faces. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Being an experienced team, we might have appreciated more complexity to the puzzles. Several of them used very basic logic to complete, making it occasionally feel like a room for beginners. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This is one of the top-rated rooms in the Netherlands and definitely worth playing, no matter what level you are. The room wasn’t particularly scary, despite how it might appear in the marketing, so hopefully the minor horror elements don’t deter people from playing. The setting of the game, taking place in a genuine monastery, heightens the level of immersion. This is also enhanced at the beginning by watching a short, professionally made video that dramatizes the story. There is a lot of variety with the puzzles, including light dexterity, observation and searching, deduction, and cooperation. The puzzles begin in a nonlinear format allowing larger or more experienced teams to split up and tackle different elements simultaneously, should they want to escape in a faster time. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK The room is now quite a few years old, and comparing it to the other rooms at this location it does feel it. The first room in particular seemed quite bland and doesn’t convey a high degree of the tension we had expected in the buildup. This is a Gen-1 room, and so the puzzles are also very basic with a lot of padlocks to open. Although the puzzles were all logical there wasn’t a lot of cohesion between them at times. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? If you are coming to Rock City Escape to play "Poppet" or "Soup du Jour" , then it’s worth spending the extra hour to help free "Bloody Mary" . Pictures and words can't do adequate justice to the depth and breadth of lighting, sounds, decor, and overall ambience. It truly must be experienced to be understood! As we explored the room, we found the progression and variety of the activities contained within to be thoughtful and reflective of the path a perfect date night could take. This is not an escape room, but something far more expansive and relationship-centered. Enthusiasts will find the puzzles to be relatively simple; the goal is not to expertly speed through the challenges, but instead to luxuriate in the beauty of an unfolding, unpredictable experience. ‘Approach the opportunities with intent and vigor' is an apt instruction from the visionary creator. We have from time to time discussed our desire to either create or participate in an experience that was multi-dimensional (such as an airbnb containing hidden puzzles and secret compartments). This is that dream, but 1001 times greater due to the spectacular thematic design and the incorporation of romantic experiences that ranged from light-hearted to intimate. When compared to the cost of similarly opulent luxury resorts and hotels, we feel that this unique experience provides fantastic value and is the ultimate extravagance for a special occasion. We recommend splurging on at least one of the add-ons, depending on your personalities and curiosities… 🧩 MISSED THE MARK We stayed in "The Genie Suite" shortly after it opened. We did encounter a few technical glitches that are easily rectified, and we found the owner to be very communicative. He is clearly interested in crafting a flawless experience. In an attempt to keep elements that are not central to the immersive environment to a minimum, instructions as to how to operate some of the components are a bit lacking. We found ourselves wondering 'how do we keep the mood lighting going?' and 'how does this work?'. We appreciate the creator's desire to minimize disruptions to the immersion but would've preferred to avoid googling how to turn certain things on or off. This is another easy fix that would further enhance this incredible experience. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? We love escape rooms and outdoor adventure challenges both for the joy of discovering unexpected surprises and for the connection and teamwork they foster. While theGenie Suite provides plenty of those moments, it also led us to create novel, personal, and intimate memories that we will talk about forever. We found the experience to be both extremely fun and one that allowed us to deepen our connection to one another. Prepare to smile and laugh, as well as to be vulnerable and passionate together. We had a clear objective, moving beyond merely following instructions to solve puzzles. The character introductions at the start of each room were an excellent way to guide us, enriching the overall game experience. We found rooms 1 and 2 to be the most enjoyable. The first room had an exciting infiltration vibe, while the second transported us into a circus setting, ready to start our revenge. The ending was exhilarating, delivering an adrenaline rush with its time constraints and fostering teamwork. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Several activities seemed overly repetitive, particularly in the third room, as they extended over numerous rounds. We couldn't tell if we had completed any rounds or advanced to the next level. It felt like we were repeating the same task, making the time seem prolonged. One of the puzzles included word clues that were challenging to interpret regarding shape and color. 🏹   TAKE A SHOT? This game is an exhilarating blend of mini escape room puzzles brought together in an exciting circus theme. It was like juggling brain-busting challenges while riding a unicycle—prepare to sweat! If you’re familiar with how solutions are checked in the EXIT games, then you will have no issues here. The instructions explain how we use “Clair” (the wheel) to check our solution. After we find three symbols in the puzzle, we line them up on Clair which reveals a number in the center, then take the matching numbered card from the answer deck to see if we are correct. Everything looked fantastic and with the front cover when we opened the box, this immediately sets the tone of this great looking experience. The gameplay and the story unfolded through the comic book and along the way, we hit stop signs that told us not to proceed until a puzzle has been solved. Each stop sign directed us to a specific envelope which we opened to reveal everything we needed to solve that puzzle. The props really stood out here. They were higher quality than we expected, and some were even larger than we anticipated. Using a comic book to deliver the narrative was a great touch. It felt far more immersive than reading text, with characters speaking directly to us as the story unfolded. Some were straightforward and intuitive, while others required more deduction and careful attention to details in the comic. Most of them though, needed some of the amazing props provided and even had us build some items. Difficulty varied throughout, which kept things interesting, though it occasionally felt a bit uneven. The hint system was well designed on the cards. Easier puzzles had fewer hint tiers, while tougher ones offered more, making it easy to get help without spoiling too much. We played with two people but found that there was enough to go around to accommodate up to four people. We felt as if we had been transported to an ancient town's pub, where we were introduced to a storyline and informed about the portal we would be exploring. The clues provided for the puzzles were really clear, allowing us to progress through the game seamlessly. In the latter stages of the game, there was a cleverly designed mechanism that enabled us to retrieve an item, perfectly aligning with the theme. The instructions we followed to uncover what happened to the local character, Budrow, and how we could assist him were logical and aligned with our mission. There was a torch puzzle that utilized the torch in a novel and innovative way, which we had not encountered before. We appreciated the uniqueness of this escape room's theme, and the most remarkable aspect was the unexpected twist at the end! 🧩 MISSED THE MARK It would be beneficial to have the "character" who provides hints or storyline elements audible in the second room as well, so participants do not miss any information or need to run back and forth to hear the messages. One of the puzzles offered too many visual clues, which led to confusion. We didn't actually use some of the clues in room 1 but was able to solve it based on the clues solely in room 2. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This room was an absolute blast! It exuded a thrilling mix of mystery and eeriness (not quite horror, but the atmospheric lighting and sound might spook those new to creepy rooms) and gave us an exhilarating adrenaline rush as we uncovered the truth behind the swamp thing. We absolutely loved the GM's performance at the start and the character voices that enhanced our gaming experience throughout.
