The five distinct areas of the zoo were well-marked, and there was a single input station that we needed to return to in order to complete each set of tasks. Each area featured different types of puzzles, with varying levels of linearity, providing players the option to collaborate or adopt a "divide and conquer" approach. The creator made a concerted effort to engage all five senses in the puzzles, enhancing the enjoyment of the experience, particularly for children. Despite being a single-room game, the creator effectively utilized available resources to delineate the different areas of the zoo. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK It would be beneficial to create divisions within this room to enhance the experience of entering new spaces, adding both satisfaction and an element of mystery. For example, the birds could be housed in a large aviary with a secure lock perhaps? 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? While this game is designed for children or beginners, we found it to be quite enjoyable. We completed it swiftly and had plenty of time remaining, as the puzzles were well-designed and flowed smoothly. It would be interesting to see an adult version with more challenging puzzles or additional adjustments. After arriving, you realize you were the only one invited and are being framed for a major liquor smuggling operation. With your fingerprints all over the place, you must discover who framed you and find a way to escape before the “fuzz” arrives. 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The set design was beautifully done with the feel of a speakeasy with old barrels, vintage significant props and even a doorway in through a laundromat. Some of the puzzles were clever in the way they were executed, using the theme, the props and the atmosphere of the speakeasy to blend it all together. With a lot of props used to decorate the room, there were a lot of things fixed into place to avoid confusion as to what should be used and what should not be used. The game continued to reveal new things as we progressed with some great surprises. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK There were a few red herrings that could have been avoided as well as a few lock inputs that were the same and no cluing as to where the solution should go. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? "Prohibition: Last Call" was pleasing to the eyes and had some solid puzzles that blended into the room. There were some fun reveals as we navigated through the game. Though most of the room was low tech, they had some great elements that used tech where it counted. We played with 6 people and found there was room to move around. 8 people feels like it would be the maximum. This room would be great for anyone who enjoys a speakeasy theme or a challenging escape room. High profile robberies continue to occur in every town it visits. Is it merely a coincidence, or is something more menacing hiding beneath the tent? We also found some circus themed punchouts featuring characters and some circus trailers. Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 We began by going through the instructions, which did a great job of welcoming both beginners and veterans of the Exit games. If you are new to these games, you can read the whole instruction booklet but returning players only need to read the blue text for new concepts specific to this game. If you are unfamiliar with how Exit games work, each puzzle is tied to a symbol such as a star, circle, moon, etc. Solving the puzzle will produce three numbers or colors. Using the solution wheel, align the symbol and the three numbers/colors to reveal a number in the middle, then draw the matching Solution card. A correct solution will tell you how to proceed. This game in particular had a circus theme that flowed smoothly through both the story and puzzles. We liked the fact that the game provided a clear starting point. As we progressed, we opened different trailers, with each step clearly signposted. One thing that stood out for us was that there were plenty of hands-on puzzles and physical components, which made the cutting, writing, and destruction feel worthwhile. Pay close attention to every detail, as earlier details may become important later and make sure to examine everything, including the insert and box, because any item could be part of a puzzle. Exit games are meant to be destroyed and this one was satisfying in its destruction. For us, the final puzzle stood out for its fun and rewarding construction aspect. The hint system for the game is done through the hint cards. Each puzzle has three hints and a solution, where the first hint typically confirms the components you need and gets more detailed with the other two and then the solution. We found they were properly tiered for this game. It has a solid theme and varied puzzles that are accessible for beginners and still enjoyable for the enthusiasts. In true Exit style, there were some nice aha moments and hidden gems that were exciting to encounter. We played as a family with two tweens and two adults and found that everyone stayed engaged throughout. Two adults though could make a great date night out of this game. This is where the staff once lived, worked, and carried out their disturbing experiments. Discover the eerie truth behind why this once-busy floor was condemned, gaining the ominous title of The Bleeding Grounds. Will you leave with your sanity intact? 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE Atmosphere: Outside, the Monster Midway area showcased horror CarnEVIL games, a horror museum, mini-escape games, a gift shop, and much more! It was vibrant, colorful, and welcoming. Inside, it was eerie, dilapidated, and filled with ghastly items. Storyline: Brighton brings our favorite horror films with an insane asylum theme to life. The sadistic backstory of peculiar staff gatherings experimenting on mental patients is what serves as the final touch to this horrific experience. Set design: The set designs truly established the mood; being inside a dim, aged warehouse gave it an authentic, decayed, industrial vibe. Upstairs in "The Bleeding Grounds", it resembled an old Victorian-era structure. There was an abundance of visual elements that perfectly captured the themes and ambiance of an asylum filled with lunatics and an ancient haunted house. Actors: The actors remained in character, whether they were out in the open setting the scene or popping out for an unexpected jump scare. Varying intensity: There were several unexpected jump scares that eventually started to feel repetitive. However, when it came to a climactic ending, Brighton Asylum did not disappoint. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Psychological elements: Set in a mental asylum, the overarching theme of disturbed residents should instantly establish a strong basis for what is anticipated. It would have been interesting to delve into the psychological fears common to most people and incorporate an element of surprise in that aspect. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? Unlike typical haunted houses, Brighton Asylum elevates the experience with contemporary techniques and a full-contact approach to unsettle and scare visitors. At Brighton, you'll explore "The Brighton Asylum" itself, an industrial complex that delves into other nightmares as well. In "SubCULTure", you will also traverse Brighton's underground service tunnel, which was once utilized for transporting medical supplies to other buildings. For those brave enough, the 2nd floor staffing area known as "The Bleeding Grounds" is open! This area is where the staff once worked, slept, and experimented... it has earned its name for a good reason! 👋 CUSTOMER SERVICE Location of the venue isn't that easy to find. The entrance is through a small alleyway that leads to their parking lot. The parking lot attendants were not helpful and weren't very visible when directing traffic. We ended up driving in circles until we found parking on a residential street. All attractions are indoors and there is some coverage if it rains on their main queue lines outside. The line formations were organized with both a standard pass and a fast pass option. They have security on staff every single night including police officers, retired police officers, and SORA licensed security. Customers will have to be wanded by a security officer before they will be allowed to enter the park, and a photo ID is needed if you purchased your ticket in advance. Additionally, there are cameras recording in every room of the haunted houses and in the queue line, midway and parking areas. All the actors were professional and gave a satisfactory performance. As media/ press guests, it would have been more convenient to have a wristband or some form of identification indicating that we were there to take photos and film, as consent had been granted before our arrival. As an escape room enthusiast, I often feel compelled to solve puzzles, whether mentally or physically, while contemplating the significance of my actions. In "Haunted Bank NYC", I appreciated that they included elements that fulfilled my puzzle solving appetite. Actors: When engaging with the live actors, my friends and I frequently test them to see if they'll step out of character. We were quite impressed by their dedication to their roles. Psychological elements: We really appreciated the creative elements that cleverly played on common fears. Those moments really stood out to us. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Storyline: I really enjoy the "Broadway Heist" backstory, especially how it all went wrong, leading to bloodshed and betrayal. However, we didn't receive any of that information during the experience, which left us confused about why we transitioned from a bank vault to a mining tunnel and eventually ended up in a hospital. Set design: Given that the experience only lasts about 20-25 minutes, we were constantly being pushed through by the actors and didn't have a chance to fully appreciate the set design. Varying intensity: After the first few jump-scares, we began to feel desensitized to them, particularly as they became more repetitive. It would have been nice to create additional opportunities for misdirection. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? What fascinated us the most was that this took place in a real abandoned bank. I appreciated that we could physically engage in some activities, and there were a few puzzle challenges throughout. There were some inventive jump-scares, and the actors stayed in character the entire time. Given that this is a 15-minute experience, we didn't have much opportunity to fully appreciate the set design, as we were moved along to keep on schedule. Regarding the check-in process, there wasn't a lot of room to wait on line outside the facility as it was literally on the sidewalk and it felt a bit unorganized. 👋 CUSTOMER SERVICE Location of the venue is easy to find (on the corner of Canal St. & Broadway). As mentioned, the line formation wasn't really organized and a bit congested. The experience felt secure throughout, and we didn't encounter any genuine safety concerns. The lobby area and restrooms were clean. The staff that we encountered were helpful, friendly, and personable throughout. Can you find the solutions to each challenge and lead these amateurs to a successful premiere? 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE I loved that the story and setting were unique and original. The narrative was very whimsical. It made us laugh a lot. Since the game had no time limit, I enjoyed the story and immersive experience without the rush to escape. The puzzles were clean and fit well with the unique story. There was a wide range of puzzles. Each puzzle satisfied us a lot when we solved it. I love that the story guided us on what to do next clearly. Even though the website says this room is more narrative-based and has fewer puzzles than the other games the company offers, while those are true, I think the game still has a good number of puzzles to enjoy the experience. The flow of the game was excellent, and especially the ending of the game is something special and fun that you have to experience on your own. The interaction with our friendly game master was so much fun. This particular game requires interaction with a game master a lot, so the game master is watching players all the time. If any players are stuck with any puzzle, the game master can guide them. Next Level Escape is in the heart of Sydney's central business district. It is close to the Sydney Opera House and easy to access by public transportation. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK One thing that missed the mark during the game was that I could hear the voices of the people playing in the other room. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? "The Show Must Go On" does not have a 60-minute time limit like a regular escape room. Although it may not have the thrill to escape within the time limit, this narrative-based game is fun, unique, and original. I believe the game is for everyone, from a beginner to an enthusiast, who wants a joyous immersive experience, especially for those who love a game with a unique narrative or GM interaction. One of our agents (code name Fox) had gone missing in the 21st Century. He was on an important job to preserve the timeline. We needed to find his whereabouts and destroy the enemy so we can save our future. Next Level Escape's "A Temporal Tangle" definitely bought our digital escape game experience to the next level. This was probably our favorite digital escape game so far. You can tell the game developer was probably an enthusiast her/himself. Every action mimicked what a player would actually do in an escape room. From putting the items we found in an organized area to taking the items out of the inventory panel after they've been used, all were well-thought-out. The inventory system was quite easy to use. Once we collected an item, it would be stored in the panel. Some items were "one time use" items like keys while others were items we had to combine with others in order to make an action occur. We loved that we're able to rotate and examine the items in 3D. It felt like we were actually holding them in our hands. The game used a lot of "tools" we would normally see in an escape room (ie. black light, different types of number and letter locks, etc..). There were also a lot of familiar puzzles that we would encounter in an actual escape room. It really bought back memories for us since we're unable to visit in person right now. There were multiple areas we're able to explore just like in a physical escape room. It was exciting when an unexpected area would open up. Every time we thought it was the end of the game, there were more surprises to be discovered. We didn't mind it at all as it was very entertaining and we didn't want it to end. Every time when we entered a new area, the music would change. It felt very immersive along with the theme of the room. Their attention to detail for this game was amazing. There was one point when we had to interact with something in another area and as we got closer the sound would get louder. We also really loved that each action was paired with a sound effect (unlocking locks, unzipping a bag, opening an item, etc...). One of our favorite sound features was that all the reading materials were read out loud by the characters in the game. We logged into the game together and used a video conferencing website to communicate with each other. This worked very well as we're able to search different areas for items we could've missed by each other. The game was not synced even though we were logged in together. You would still need to do all the actions that was completed by the other player. So definitely work together as a team and don't leave a man/woman behind! Since there was no time limit for the game, you could log back in anytime to complete it. We were able to finish the game in about 1 hour and 10 minutes with no hints. There were self guided hints build into the game in case you needed them. Lastly, we really enjoyed the added twist for the ending. Just when you think you've seen an incredible Frankenstein prop, brace yourself for what's next... The lighting and initial jump scare perfectly complemented the Frankenstein theme. For those who might get startled, rest assured, this is the peak of the "scare" factor in the entire game. It's absolutely worth continuing. We thoroughly enjoyed one of the puzzles cleverly hidden in plain sight. It wasn't overly challenging, but required keen observation, leading to a satisfying "Aha" moment once discovered. Assembling Frankenstein and witnessing its animation was another standout moment in this game. Conundroom Escape Rooms excelled with the "revival"! 🧩 MISSED THE MARK We thoroughly enjoyed the entire adventure and have little to add to this section. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? If you're familiar with the tale of Frankenstein, you'll be thrilled to dive into this game! It's like witnessing the story unfold right before your eyes. You'll have the chance to bring the iconic monster to life and feel an incredible sense of accomplishment at the end! There's an agility puzzle in the game that poses an exciting challenge for two players. We managed to conquer it, but three players would be ideal, which is why the game is designed for three participants. Aside from that, all the other puzzles are easily manageable with any group size. This is hands down our favorite game at Conundroom Escape Rooms during our tour. Organized criminals like mafia boss Maximillian Malone are making a killing on illegal booze, and Uncle Sam isn't too happy about it. It's your job as a team of federal agents to infiltrate Malone's speakeasy - "The Blind Tiger", to find enough proof of his crimes to put him in jail and throw away the key. Video above is property of The Escape Room 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The room's decor does a great job of capturing the period aesthetic, with plenty of little accents like advertisements and old photographs to sell the look. Though not all of it worked as intended, the room does a good job of incorporating its technology in ways that feel natural for the theme. I especially liked a particular prop that was incorporated into the game's ending. Puzzle design is strong, with several deduction-logic puzzles that we really enjoyed completing, and which matched the detective theme nicely. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Some of the technology in the room wasn't working, including a skill game that wouldn't deploy no matter how many times we completed it. Staff didn't notice right away, so we wasted several minutes trying to get the machine to work. We weren't provided with pen and paper or any other means of taking notes, which was especially frustrating for a puzzle involving coded messages on the ratio. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? Rooms with a period aesthetic live and die based on how committed they are to their theme. With detailed decorations that convincingly capture the look and feel of a 1920's speakeasy - "The Blind Tiger" checks the most important boxes for this style of room. Both sections of the speakeasy incorporate numerous artistic touches from advertisements to period-accurate photographs to phone booths and radios that scream Roaring 20's, and all of that lends the puzzles and the room at larges a strong sense of time and places. Plus, there are some fun secrets to uncover that feel straight out of a pulp adventure comic. Unfortunately, my partner and I found our immersion broken in some places, in large part due to malfunctioning technology. In particular, a skill game in one corner of the room failed to deploy its clue even after we had finished it several times, which delayed us for quite some time. Eventually, we were able to signal the staff to remotely deploy the clue, but this also took some time, which surprised us given how long we had spent struggling with the machine and commenting out loud that it wasn't working. If a tune-up on the machine isn't possible, then we at least encourage a closer eye be kept on the machine from the control room. A second frustration we had with this room was the lack of note-taking implements provided, despite pen and paper being available in other rooms here. Some puzzles were difficult to complete without some way to write things down, including a multi-step puzzle that began with remembering a list of code words from a radio broadcast. If you fail to remember them all in order, you need to start the whole broadcast over again, but it won't begin until several advertisements have played first, meaning a lot of wasted time if you don't have everything properly memorized. We're not sure whether the lack of pen and paper was an oversight or a deliberate design choice, but we encourage its use for the future. Despite some aspects that held our experience back, "The Blind Tiger" is still a solid room with several things going for it. It's clear that the designers put a lot of thought into it, and that shows not only in the aesthetics, but in some fun and imaginative puzzles as well. Though it needs just a little more work in our eyes, that work isn't strenuous, so we expect this to be a pretty good experience for most guests going forward. ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Since it is in the middle of Portland, The Escape Room does not have its own parking. The USA and the USSR are locked in a battle of escalating tensions, and if ever that conflict boils over it will mean mutually assured destruction for all parties involved. In this world on the brink of destruction, a KGB agent obsessed with starting a third world war has snuck onto the Soviet submarine Stalinsky and primed its nuclear warheads. With just an hour left until launch, it's your job to undo the agent's sabotage and keep this from becoming an incident of world-ending proportions! 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE Though perhaps a little minimalist in some respects, the decor captures the feeling of a military submarine effectively, with a couple small touches for character. In particular we really liked the officer election posters scattered throughout. One puzzle did a good job of challenging our initial assumptions, while another involved a cooperative skill challenge that was creative in its design and prop construction. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Some areas of the room were either poorly lit or simply weren't used effectively. For instance, a large prop in the first room (an engine, perhaps?) wasn't used at all, which seemed an odd choice for something that took up so much space. While fiddling with an electronic puzzle element that shouldn't have been active until later in the story, we accidentally put in a correct answer that skipped over several puzzles. The staff didn't notice until the end of the room when we expressed our confusion that there were numerous elements we had never used. Given how easy it was to accidentally put in the correct answer, we would encourage that the puzzle in question be activated only when it is needed. One puzzle required familiarity with maritime phrases we found too obscure to be considered common knowledge. One puzzle involving studying an image on a computer screen was incredibly frustrating due to the image's poor resolution and color distinction. We stared at it for a very long time before finally resorting to guesswork, a tactic we almost never use. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? Before taking on "World On Edge", we were warned by our game master that the room was new, so it was possible that the experience wouldn't be quite as smooth as our previous room ("The Blind Tiger Speakeasy", which itself had some technical difficulties). Following our experience, it was difficult not to agree with our game master, and to further conclude that the room was not yet ready for the public. While the room did an alright job of capturing the feeling of being on a submarine (including a fun synchronized key-turning sequence straight out of a war movie) and even employed some creative puzzle designs in a couple places, the overall experience felt rather rough around the edges, with multiple puzzles that my experienced team found not so much difficult to complete as they were frustrating. We had to complete a skill challenge in a dark corner, guess at obscure phrases we'd never heard before, and make ourselves cross-eyed squinting at a tangled mass of wires (with very similar colors) on a grainy TV screen. All around, the level of friction between the players and the game was much higher than what I'd expect to find in a professional business, and left us feeling rather let down. Having completed a better room at The Escape Room in Portland, I know that they are capable of putting together some solid, worthwhile experiences, so I would encourage more rigorous play-testing before releasing future rooms. Given how new this room is, my hope is that it will undergo some changes in the weeks and months to come, but in its current state it is hard for me to recommend. ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Since it is in the middle of Portland, The Escape Room does not have its own parking. Metered spots are available just outside, but you may need to walk from further away if they are taken. The waiting area has plenty of seating and lockers to store your things while you play.
