- Escape Haus - "Forensics Classroom"
LOCATION: New Braunfels, Texas, USA Videos/ Photos are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME: Forensics Classroom 📅 DATE PLAYED: August 9, 2019 🎬 GENRE: Classroom, CSI 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 2 ppl): 8.5/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS: Up To 12PPL 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME: 60 Mins 💰 PRICE: $25/PP ☎️ BOOKING TYPE: Public 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED?: Yes On our way from San Antonio to Austin, Texas, we discovered a little gem along the route in New Braunfels and had to make a stop at 7:30am in the morning at Escape Haus. We are very grateful for the owner to open up for us outside of normal hours so that we can tour his amazing location. Escape Haus is located in a shopping complex with plenty of parking outside. The lobby area is huge and there’s a comfortable waiting area and another space designated for victory photos with a lot of fun props. Currently, there are 5 rooms at the location: “The Spy Room”, “Backstage at the Magic Show”, “Forensics Classroom”, “Egyptian Mysteries” and “Game Suite”. As we chugged our morning coffee, we are now ready to attempt the “Forensics Classroom” which is meant for a minimum of 6 players to a max of 12 players and it was just the two of us. The storyline is that we have to complete Miss Enigma’s Forensics course, and this is the final group project before the finish line! We need to challenge ourselves with numerous tests and problem-solving skills in order to pass her exam. The classroom setting really reminded me of when I was in elementary school. The desks and props used were very authentic. If you love the sensation of opening locks, you are at the right place! You really don’t have time to waste in here... there’s a LOT of puzzles. We found that the challenging thing about this room is to determine where the starting point is. Of course, there are items you have to search for and eventually put to use but because the room is this large and everything looked useful, you don’t really know which lock is your initial focus. The game master is actually in the room with you at this location. Normally, we would think that’s not really fun and can take away the experience but, in this case we really needed his directions. We had the owner as our game master that day and since we don’t know if other game masters are in character or not. One suggestion we would give would be maybe have them actually play a character in the room they are in and not really give obvious clues but maybe work it into their character somehow. This would make the room more immersive. Each puzzle was carefully designed to corollate to forensic work. Once you find the starting point, the game flow was much clearer and easy to follow. You can actually start at three different points and those three separate starting points had linear puzzles that followed it. These puzzles eventually came together for a final puzzle. We can imagine the complexity of resetting this room. We did manage to escape the room with a few minutes left on the clock. This room left us really wired for the rest of the day. As we peeked into his other rooms (our YouTube video will have sneak peeks of all of them), one of them especially caught our eye for the set design – “Egyptian Mysteries”. The Sphinx statue looked amazing and we can’t wait to discover what that room has to offer on our next trip! ** UPDATE - We regret to inform you that "Escape Haus" has closed its doors. (If you do decide to try this room, please remember to let them know that "ESCAPETHEROOMers" sent you!) **We don't want to go into detail and ruin any surprises for you, but you want more info like if the room is a multi-room or what other additional tips we can provide to you, feel free to email us. - Maze Rooms Austin - "The Shed"
LOCATION: Austin, Texas, USA Videos/ Photos are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME: The Shed 📅 DATE PLAYED: August 9, 2019 🎬 GENRE: Horror, Kidnap 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 2 ppl): 8.5/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS: Up To 4PPL 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME: 60 Mins 💰 PRICE: $30-45/PP (depending on group size) ☎️ BOOKING TYPE: Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED?: Yes Next stop on our list is Maze Rooms Austin. This is also a franchise with its main location in Los Angeles, California offering 19 different escape rooms. Maze Rooms Austin is one of the first escape room locations in Austin, Texas. There’s plenty of parking in front of this facility. The owners of this location builds everything in-house themselves. Today we’re trying their newest creation, “The Shed”. This room has a max capacity of 4 people. It’s probably more ideal to play with 4 but we have only two today, so the room had to be adjusted to be played by 2 people. The difficulty level we rated above is also based on 2 people. We successfully got out with a minute left on the clock. The synopsis of the story was that we were caught by the “Capitol Cannibal” killer and got locked up in his shed. He gives his victims one hour to escape before he comes back and kills them. The intro area already gave us the goosebumps. When we entered the actual room, the game master handcuffs us to the designated areas in the room and exits. We appreciated the comfort level of the handcuffs as it’s made from leather straps and it doesn’t hurt like the real metal ones. You’ll need to stretch out a lot in this room especially for two people, so comfort was important. The room design was amazing and it really felt like you’ve been captured by a maniac and have been confined to his basement and no one knows where you are. The music and sudden “surprises” definitely got us every time. I did have a little difficulty getting some items at times probably because I’m a shorty. This room does have a height requirement of 4-ft/ 5-in. This is the smallest space we’ve ever played in terms of an escape room. It was also the most clever way we've seen such a small space being used. The only thing we would recommend would be to maybe have a better visual on what actually opened when a puzzle has been solved as it’s quite dim in the room and it’s not very noticeable. Other than that, we really enjoyed the game flow and the storyline. The two other rooms there are “Spy Safe House” and “Pharaoh’s Tomb” which we got a chance to take a sneak peak also and they looked really amazing as well. We’ll need to return one day to try those out for sure. If you’ve been to Maze Rooms Austin, which game was your favorite? ** UPDATE - We regret to inform you that "Maze Rooms Austin" has closed its doors. - Lockout Austin - "CSI: Murder at the Asylum"
LOCATION: Austin, Texas, USA Videos/ Photos are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME: CSI: Murder at the Asylum 📅 DATE PLAYED: August 9, 2019 🎬 GENRE: Detective, Crime 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 2 ppl): 7/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS: Up To 10PPL 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME: 60 Mins 💰 PRICE: $27.50/PP ☎️ BOOKING TYPE: Public/Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED?: Yes Video above has been provided by Lockout Austin We arrived at Lockout Austin next and there’s plenty of parking right in front of this facility. There’s also ramp for handicap accessibility as well. While waiting in the spacious lobby, there’s plenty of puzzles available on the tables for you to tackle before your actual game. Currently there are 5 games at Lockout Austin and we’re trying out their “CSI: Murder at the Asylum” game today. We were paired with a group of college kids and two of them played escape rooms before but most of them did not. They played very well with us knowing that we’ve played a good amount and was very respectful when asking us to confirm if they were doing things “right”. We loved stepping back and giving some hints here and there and seeing their minds work. It was a fun experience being paired with a group that's very enthusiastic about the game and very competitive about getting out in time. The storyline of the room was that there was a mysterious murder that happened at "Pinnhurst Asylum". We were called in as a forensic team to investigate the murder but in an hour federal agents are going take over. We must beat the clock and solve the mystery! As we entered, the room was set to look like an office space and a waiting area. There was a game master in character to explain the game to us and that’s always appreciated to set the tone of the story. The deduction method of play by utilizing different puzzles forensically was done very well in this room. We have played a few other rooms with the same theme before and we liked the game flow of this room as it’s very clear and made sense. The set design could use a bit more of an eerie decor since it is an Asylum. We did like the twist and how the story played out at the end as a strong ending is always important. We also enjoyed that there was no repetitive puzzles and not too many red herrings in the room. There was one part we got stuck since it was pretty hard to notice. We did get out with some time still left on the clock. This is one of their older rooms at this location and we are curious what their updated rooms are like as most of the locks in this room were traditional. We did not get to try their newest room “Area 51-2”, but we did get to take a look at it (click on our YouTube video for a sneak peek inside) and we’re very intrigued by the set design and what surprises it holds. So I guess we’ll have to make a trip back to Austin soon! ** UPDATE - We regret to inform you that "Lockout Austin" has closed its doors. - Novel Escape - "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea"
LOCATION: Austin, Texas, USA Above photo has been provided by Novel Escape 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea 📅 DATE PLAYED: August 9, 2019 🎬 GENRE: Adventure, Submarine 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 2 ppl): 9/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS: Up To 6PPL 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME: 60 Mins 💰 PRICE: $29/PP ☎️ BOOKING TYPE: Public/rivate 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED?: Yes Our final stop in Austin, Texas is a brand-new escape room location called “Novel Escape” that will be opening soon (hopefully by the time we post this review). There’s plenty of parking in front of the facility. Make sure to check out our YouTube video to see what there is to eat around there before you go to the escape room! This location currently only has one room and we’ll be beta testing it for them today. The room is called “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” and its inspired from the book! Novel Escape will have a very unique theme where each of their rooms will be inspired by a different book. When you enter the lobby, you feel as if you're stepping inside of a library. There’s a lot of books on different shelves. If you're an avid reader, you’ll love hanging out here. Brandon was getting sweaty as he doesn’t like to read much in an escape room and I usually have to take on that job, but it was close to 11pm when we arrived at this location so I was not sure how I’ll do in this room. But this room was just the opposite. There’s not much reading at all! As the owner/ gamemaster got into character and led us to captain Nemo’s submarine, we had to quickly get to work as we only had one hour to find the ancient pirate treasure and return to surface safely. Even though this is not a high-tech room, the owner was able to use minimal set design to still create the feeling of us being on the ship and underwater. We liked his fun puzzles as it was clear and had a great flow with the storyline. We were able to utilize everything in the room for different puzzles and did not encounter any red herrings. We always appreciate that aspect when doing puzzle designs as no one likes to waste time solving misleading puzzles just to realize there’s no relevance at all. We gave a few more ideas on how the room design can feel a bit more immersive but our unanimous feeling on this room was that this is a fun and spacious room for groups of all ages. We already can’t wait to see what the next chapter of Novel Escape room will be. Perhaps we need to start reading more in preparation for a head start on his next adventure! ** We don't want to go into detail and ruin any surprises for you, but you want more info like if the room is a multi-room or what other additional tips we can provide to you, feel free to email us. Do you have what it takes to navigate through and make it out alive? Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The ambient lighting and sound effects in this room really transported us inside a Mayan temple. The set design really allowed us to feel like explorers making our way through an undiscovered temple. There was a good mixture of puzzle challenges and there was definitely something for everyone. Most of the obstacles that were implemented into the game made sense why they were there. s you inside adim red and green lighting mixed well with the storyline. The various stations and numerous buttons also made us feel like we just stepped foot into the control room of the submarine. One of the latter puzzles definitely created a sense of urgency. We felt the sweat coming down our spines as we try to launch the device in the nick of time. The final prop that we had to use towards the end had some special effects and sounds build in that made the conclusion special. The act felt very realistic and it was the perfect way to complete the mission. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK One of the physical puzzles in this game definitely required 2 people to work on it and it eventually became quite tedious. It also had us questioning it's purpose within the set design and storyline. The ending felt inconclusive. We never really had a sense of urgency to escape or a mission to accomplish. I think it could've been more story-driven with some sort of goal to achieve. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? We've actually played a variation of this game at another location a couple years ago. It was nice to run through it again and relive the adventure. "Secrets of the Maya" is a must-do for fans of Indiana Jones, Tomb-Raider, Uncharted, etc. With the set design and challenges, you truly feel like a character in your own adventure movie! This game is fun and family-friendly! ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Free parking lot right in front Lobby area with seating available Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers (If you do decide to try this game, give us a shoutout or tag us on social media so we know you heard it from "ESCAPETHEROOMers"!) If you can successfully infiltrate this submarine and launch a missile at the enemy's submarine in an hour, you'll be crowned the hero of all times. Do you think you have what it takes? Video above is property of Escapism Room Escape Games 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The dim red and green lighting mixed well with the storyline. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Some of the tasks that we had to accomplish were lacking directions. Since the puzzles were non-linear, we were unsure which act triggered what device to open or unlock. By adding sound for confirmation or lighting up certain areas would help resolve this issue. Also because the lights are dim in this room, certain name plaques were harder to read. This also made us miss some of the cluing. Perhaps adding some lights directly on top would be helpful. There was a fairly complicated deduction puzzle at the beginning and our clip board did not erase for some reason. It definitely made the puzzle more challenging. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? We've played a bunch of submarine themed escape room by now. Most of them are great at set designs (like this one) but puzzle wise it's quite similar in the sense that it's mostly task oriented. I would have loved to see more of the "infiltration" (like starting the game out by us trying to sneak in using certain tools) aspect of the storyline versus mostly concentrating on button switches. However I do think this game has a pretty unique ending that we haven't seen before that made it feel more authentic than the others. Full disclosure, this game was also purchase from another builder. But the creator has one that he Is building in house as we speak. We look forward to seeing his original creativity as we took a sneak peek and it definitely looks intriguing enough for us to want to go back in the near future! ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Free parking lot right in front Lobby area with seating available Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers (If you do decide to try this game, give us a shoutout or tag us on social media so we know you heard it from "ESCAPETHEROOMers"!) It's up to you to travel to Neverland to save Tink! But be warned, if you fail, there may be explosive consequences! Your adventure starts... NOW!! Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE It's amazing how spacious these rooms were. There's a lot of information already disclosed on the website, so I'm going to reveal a bit more in this review than I normally would. Just imagine feeling like big kids at a theme park. There's a slide (but only kids can go through that magical portal), a forest, a treasure cave and even a bubble machine! Live actors change every time, so you might get a fairy or a pirate to help you along with your journey. Our pirate was exactly the mate that we needed for this mission. He was helpful especially for the search and find components (being that there's a lot of spaces to cover) but also hands off for most of the adventure so we could explore on our own. There were a few clever visual puzzles that gave us "wow" moments. We also enjoyed the physical puzzles as well. One of our favorite moments was when something was triggered in the forest. It was a big reveal moment that felt like a treasure was found. The set design was top notch. We traveled from Wendy's apartment into a forest then a cave and finally onboard Captain Hook's ship! Everything was carefully mapped out to not miss any details. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK We encountered some repeated puzzle ideas in the same room which could be easily swapped out. There was one puzzle at the beginning that required the GM to give us directions as there were no clear clues on how to solve the puzzle. The ending was a bit confusing for us. We thought our mission was to find and rescue Tinkerbell, but we didn't actually get to see her or release her from captivity. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This experience is a bit different than the traditional escape rooms we've played in the past. You really do need to work with the live actor as they are guiding you through the rooms with useful hints and also managing your time. There's no clocks in the room so you really need to depend on your GM as their goal is to try to help you escape and if not at least be able to experience most of the game. Some components would be really difficult for us to find on our own without the GM's guidance. Also, these were some of the biggest rooms we've seen in terms of space, so it really helps to have more teammates. There's a lot of traveling required and you'll need to associate things you've seen previously with the later puzzles. I definitely advise calling out items you've found and organizing them into one area so everyone on the team knows what's going on. Overall, we really loved this room and there's no doubt in our minds that we'll come back to experience the other ones in the future. In our video you'll be able to see a glimpse of all the rooms and you'll know exactly why you'll have to visit Red Giant Escape Rooms if you're in the area as well! - Mystery Escape Room (St. George) - "Afraid of the Dark"
LOCATION: St. George, Utah, USA Photo above is property of Mystery Escape Room Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME: Afraid of the Dark 📅 DATE PLAYED: August 26, 2022 🎬 GENRE: Paranormal 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 2 ppl): 6.5/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS: 2-12 PPL 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME: 60 Mins 💰 PRICE: $24.95/PP, $114.95 (4PPL) ☎️ BOOKING TYPE: Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED?: Yes 📖 THE STORY It's a rainy night and you are visiting an unfamiliar town. Seeking refuge, you noticed an old house that looks like it hasn't been occupied for years. But as you went closer to the door, you heard a voice inviting you to go in. You stepped into the house and found a note on the table. It said: "Afraid of the Dark? You will pay for what you did." It's too late to turn back now... Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The décor felt like we were in an old attic of a run-down house. There were spider webs, old furniture, creepy dolls, and more! There were a lot of puzzle variations. We had to use ciphers, decrypt messages, etc. A few jump scares happened at just the right times. The prop usage with the sound effect gave that "haunting" experience the room needed. The "characters" also brought out more of the storyline as well. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK There was a bit of too much "search and find" elements in this room. Some items were quite small and well hidden too. We were confused by the sudden ending to the story. We didn't feel like we had completed what we needed to do to gain our freedom. Perhaps adding a ritual might help? 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This room used more tech than the other rooms we've experienced at Mystery Escape Room. The tech was mostly used on special effects to make the "haunting" feel more realistic. Most of the puzzles still used the traditional locks and keys. We enjoyed the solving aspect of the room but not so much on the "search and find" (perhaps we are just not good at it). Although the room does have a few jump scare moments, there are no live actors. If a scaredy-cat like Cici can escape, then you can too! ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Free parking in the back Lobby area with seating available Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers (If you do decide to try this game, give us a shoutout or tag us on social media so we know you heard it from "ESCAPETHEROOMers"!) - Mystery Escape Room (St. George) - "Nancy Drew and the Hidden Chamber"
LOCATION: St. George, Utah, USA Photo above is property of Mystery Escape Room Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME: Nancy Drew & The Hidden Chamber 📅 DATE PLAYED: August 26, 2022 🎬 GENRE: Mystery 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 2 ppl): 8/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS: 2-12 PPL 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME: 60 Mins 💰 PRICE: $29.95/PP, $139.95 (4PPL) ☎️ BOOKING TYPE: Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED?: No 📖 THE STORY Nancy just got a case that led her to an apartment in River Heights. She received intel that a shipment of dangerous chemicals has just been delivered to this place. Will she find the evidence she needs before the culprit gets home? Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE At first glance, you might not think there's much to do in this room but there's a LOT of puzzles. We were quite surprised by how "hidden'' the chamber was... The finale had a cool puzzle (although we ran out of time and didn't actually get to experience it) that went hand in hand with the theme. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Some props felt like they needed updating. There were a lot of riddles in this room. Some were just displayed on the wall. We didn't feel like that was relevant to the story. Perhaps if the solution would give some aspect on who's apartment we were in, their motive and how we could save the day would be better than a random answer. It was also difficult to give clues to riddles without just giving out the solution for the game masters. We suggest changing some of these puzzles out to other types of puzzles. One physical puzzle would be difficult for GM to give hints too. Only one person could attempt it at one time. The room should really provide some visual hints just in case it's not solvable by the group or else they might not get to enjoy the rest of the game. There was a puzzle that we had to retrieve way too many props in order to get a message. It was also in a space where only one person could really work on it. It felt like a time filler puzzle to us. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This room might work better with a larger group as you can work on the puzzles simultaneously. Some puzzles are less time consuming than others so our suggestion to the creator would be to shorten some of time consuming ones especially if it could only be done by one person at a time. Players who are good at logic and riddles might have a slightly easier time with the puzzles in this room. It was quite challenging for two players as it attested our dexterity and patience. ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Free parking in the back Lobby area with seating available Please note: At one point, you'll have to go back and forth in a small space. Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE This location has a really innovative way of starting your game. Everyone will be taking onto a time machine. Your game master will take you to the era where you will begin your journey. Our game master was great. He was in character the entire time. He paid close attention to where we got stuck and even added humor to his responses to us at times. This room had awesome sound system. We heard the GM loud and clear (it's quite rare as sometimes the hints are given through a TV monitor or walkie-talkie so excuse our excitement for situations like this). Nancy was actually also giving us help during the game. We liked how her assistance was incorporated into the game. The clues are given in accordance to the speed that the group is solving the puzzles. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK There was a puzzle symbol that was missing. We were confused and so was the GM as we didn't know which clues went with that puzzle. There was a safe in the room that will lockout if we input too many incorrect tries but the solution was not really easy to confirm. Our GM was helpful and asked us to confirm with him before inputting the code into the safe. We would suggest swapping a puzzle that has a confirmable answer rather than having to ask the GM or else more groups might run into the "locked out" issue. We would suggest mentioning about electric sockets during the intro as most escape rooms warn players not to touch them so this could be something that they should know beforehand. There was a puzzle in the room that had the player make a tool themselves in order to solve the puzzle. It was difficult when the answers needed to be exact. The tool that each player make could be slightly different. We suggest proving the tool. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This game really felt like a teamwork experience. We had the help from our GM and even Nancy herself. It's a great way for the players to feel like they are part of the story. The game flow was the best one we experienced at Mystery Escape Room and we look forward to more variations of the "Nancy Drew experience" in the future as she's definitely one of my favorite detectives! ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Meter parking out front Lobby area with seating available Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers (If you do decide to try this game, give us a shoutout or tag us on social media so we know you heard it from "ESCAPETHEROOMers"!) What do you think happened to the first team? Ready to step foot inside to find out? Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE This location has a really innovative way of starting your game. Everyone will be taking onto a time machine. Your game master will take you to the era where you will begin your journey. The set design incorporated not only inside the temple but the outside as well. The tent and the reminisce left behind by the first team was a nice add on to the storyline. Not sure if it's intentional but we actually felt much cooler in this room. We felt like we were actually outside under the starry night. Also we felt that eerie vibe right when we entered the temple. There was an innovative puzzle towards the end where we had to confirm if we were actually supposed to do something. There were puzzles that we had to associate what we had at the beginning with things we found later on. It was nice to be able to connect all the dots and utilize everything we found. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK There was a puzzle towards the beginning of the room where we were unsure why such a prop would appear in the outside area of a tent. We would love it if sound alerts could be added into the room (especially towards the beginning) as we were unsure what had opened. The GM had to inform us most of the time. Some items in the room needed updating. There was a puzzle in the room that had too many inputs. It felt like a time filler puzzle to us. It was also very time consuming to redo that puzzle if the team was running out of time. We suggest cutting down the amount of inputs. There was a puzzle at the end that no longer works in the room. We suggest removing it so it's not seen as a red herring. The ending could have just ended where we found an item rather than escaping with a key. We were unsure why we needed a key as the temple was already open. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? In terms of set design, this room was the best out of the 4 games we've played at Mystery Escape Room. Most of the temple games we've played would have us start in the temple already. It's definitely a unique thought process to include the entrance area. This room would be great for teams that have explorers with various skills. I would say memory and having a good ear for sound would be very helpful. If you think you have the right teammates in mind, then perhaps you're ready to unravel the mystery behind this Mayan Temple? ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Meter parking out front Lobby area with seating available Please note: This escape room has low lighting and some mildly frightening moments but there is no gore. - The Greatest Caper - "Mona Lisa Is Missing"
LOCATION: Montpelier, Vermont, USA Above photos is property of The Greatest Caper 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME: Mona Lisa is Missing 📅 DATE PLAYED: August 17, 2021 🎬 GENRE: Heist 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 4 ppl): 5/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS: 1-10 PPL (Recommend 2-6PPL) 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME: 60 Mins 💰 PRICE: $25/PP ☎️ BOOKING TYPE: Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED?: Yes 📖 THE STORY An art thief has stolen the Mona Lisa from the Louvre and hidden it in his lair. Our thief has left a series of messages for the love of his life so that she might retrieve it, but we are following the clues to find it first! 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The room itself is smartly decorated, with simple, clean, and consistent set design. Very befitting of an art thief, and it wasn't immediately obvious which art was for decoration and which ones were puzzle-related. It opens in a low-light setting, which rarely works. In this case, I found the provided lightning to be more than sufficient and even added to the caper feel. There was an option to turn on the lights for groups that aren't concerned with the leaderboard or the ambience. There is a bit of personalization at the end, which was a nice, unexpected touch! There is a humorous optional puzzle that Austin adds for larger or more experienced groups. This is a low-tech room, but it worked smoothly. It was always very clear for which lock a given code was intended. There was a mix of puzzles - physical, search, decryption, logic, riddle, and spatial. There are some really fun physical manipulations, and there are some artifacts that are collected early on that don't come into play until later. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK One of the objects to manipulate needed a bit of calibration/cleaning given the fine level of fidelity required to complete the puzzle. The storyline could be more fully realized; it's not entirely clear why messages and clues are left behind, and nothing really develops further as you work through the puzzles. Similarly, the hint mechanism works well but doesn't have any in-story reasoning behind it. Some aspects would be crowded with a large group. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? I recommend this room for groups of 2-6 players from ~8 years old and up. It is a simple yet satisfying room that is fun for both kids and adults (even if an art theme might sound less appealing to the former). The linear nature and clear indications as to which lock you're solving make it a great room for new escapers, families, bridal parties/corporate events - anything where the participants might not have much experience. It will provide a satisfying 'hey, we did that!' experience, and Austin is a gracious and supportive GM. 🔎 HINT People who peek at their Christmas presents will get ahead right off the bat in this room. - The Greatest Caper - "Beat the Banker"
LOCATION: Montpelier, Vermont, USA Above photos is property of The Greatest Caper 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME: Beat The Banker 📅 DATE PLAYED: August 17, 2021 🎬 GENRE: Fun 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 4 ppl): 7/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS: 1-10 PPL (Recommend 4-8PPL) 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME: 60 Mins 💰 PRICE: $25/PP ☎️ BOOKING TYPE: Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED?: Yes 📖 THE STORY The Greatest Caper is a family-run business, and in their free time they love to play board games, particularly Monopoly. One day when they were playing not so long ago, the twin sons disappeared in the middle of the game! Several days later, they came walking back in the door with an extraordinary tale! They had been magically whisked away to Board Game Land, and The Banker challenged them to a series of games to earn their way back to our world. Thankfully, they made it out, and they crafted a series of journal entries to help any future folks who are similarly absconded to find their own way out...Will they be enough to help you escape Board Game Land? 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE This room is very uniquely themed and also has an original approach to an escape room, where you track answers from a series of puzzles (how much money you earn playing each) then use the total amount you earned to crack a metapuzzle. This approach meant that, while this is a low-tech room, there were only four locks involved. There is no independent verification for each smaller puzzle, but the GM will help confirm which puzzles you might need to revisit if your meta-answer doesn’t pan out... This set is SO fun, incorporating so many of those classic board games you probably played as a kid (or with your kids)! It made us super nostalgic and brought out our inner kid. The way that scale is played with in some pieces is really endearing, and you can tell that the whole thing was a real labor of love. There is lots to do here for bigger groups, with many different individual puzzles that worked well. There are also a variety of puzzle types, including communication, logic, spatial, decryption, and minimal searching. There is a fun, unexpected character interaction in the middle. Your team gets a personalized memento after playing, which is a really sweet touch and a fun keepsake. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK We loved the personal and original backstory to the room, but there is room for some story progression and clarification of how you have the journal entries. There would also be fun ways to incorporate the hint system into the story itself. When it comes to puzzles, there was one where we felt like the connection between two components could have been a bit clearer (and a potential red herring/distractor). There were also a few where you might be at a bit of a disadvantage if you were unfamiliar with the games. However, in many cases rules were explained or knowledge of gameplay was unnecessary, and I am sure that the GM would be happy to help out if needed. The theme and decor of the room would be very appealing to younger kids, and there are a couple of puzzles directed towards younger players (as well as some toys they could play with). However, despite the playful atmosphere, the difficulty level of many of the puzzles are more appropriate for older kids and adults. So this is potentially a miss more from a marketing perspective, but the owner does try to steer inexperienced groups or those with younger kids to their other room. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This is a great room for anyone who is a big kid at heart, loves classic board games, or just wants to check out a room with really unique theming and approach! This is a more difficult room with less linear flow than the other room The Greatest Caper currently offers. So, newbies or small groups might be better off starting with "Mona Lisa Is Missing". We recommend groups of 4-8 players from about age 11 and up. We had a lot of fun playing and embracing our childhood fantasies of ending up in Board Game Land! 🔎 HINT You’ll be in good shape if you start the game on a roll! - REMOTE: Stratton Escape Room - "The Pinehurst"
Photos provided by Stratton Escape Room Company: Stratton Escape Room Game: The Pinehurst Country: USA 🇺🇸 Language: English Type of Game: Remote Escape Room 🗣 Genre: Mystery Date Played: 5/22/2020 Difficulty (based on 6 players): 7/10 Size of Team: Unlimited Time: 90 Minutes Price: $49.00 (1 household Zoom), $20 (each add't) The story of the bar, "The Pinehurst" was set in the 1980s. We started the game by having to find our way inside in order to help solve the mystery of the lost vintage Schiltz. There was a few extra preparation steps we needed to take with this escape room other than the normal Zoom download. Besides the standard inventory portal, we also had to download a program called "Yi Home" (which provided 5 camera angles of the rooms) and print out two pages of inventory and password "tracking" sheet. The inventory tracking sheet became very useful during the game. The rooms were filled with a ton of memorabilia items that took us back to the 80s instantly. It felt like a real bar with ton of different types of beers from all over the world. You'll definitely feel like you got a beer lesson in this game. At times we did feel a little overwhelmed with how many items were in the rooms. It would've helped us and the avatar if some items were glued down that were not in play. We completed the room in 59 minutes and 55 seconds. It's great that the escape room generously extended the play time to 90 minutes as there were a lot of searching and puzzles in this game. We felt that the portal system was too complicated as each camera needed a password that needed to be reentered every time you wanted to access one. Although it was great to have angles on all of the rooms, we didn't use it much during the game. We would've been happy with the simple avatar camera and 360 still shots of the room. The inventory list also had 7 passwords that we had to enter in order to access the items. This took our eyes away from the main action on the avatar since we're busy looking at the inventory list and the cameras. We really enjoyed the puzzles, story and decor of the room. With some minor clean up on the inventory list and gluing down some items not in play, this could definitely raise the game up a notch. The set design was easily one of our favorites in all of the remote escape rooms we've played so far! *** This game can no longer be booked as a remote game but can still be booked as an in-person experience *** (If you do decide to try this experience, give us a shoutout or tag us on social media so we know you heard it from "ESCAPETHEROOMers"!) - Stratton Escape Room - "The Pinehurst"
LOCATION: Stratton, Vermont, USA Photo above are property of Stratton Escape Room 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME: The Pinehurst 📅 DATE PLAYED: November 28, 2021 🎬 GENRE: Mystery 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 2 ppl): 6/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS: 2-6 PPL 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME: 75 Mins 💰 PRICE: $30/PP ☎️ BOOKING TYPE: Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED?: Yes 📖 THE STORY Smokie’s bar, "The Pinehurst", is an ode to his favorite beer - "Schlitz"! Amongst all of his paraphernalia, his most prized possession is the first can of beer he ever had... a "Schlitz" he stole from his Dad, which started his lifelong obsession. Yet, tonight it has mysteriously disappeared! Smokie has shut the bar down until it can be recovered, and you are determined to find it. I mean, your favorite bar can’t shut down?! 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE We were not quite old enough to be hitting the bars in 1989, but we can imagine that this is just what your local dive might have looked like (if the owner was obsessed with "Schlitz"). We’re glad to no longer have cigarettes in the bars around here, but the copious matches, cigarettes, and cigarette machine definitely set the scene well. The various (we assume) authentic "Schlitz" memorabilia really helped to sell the story. The theme is integrated throughout the set. There’s also music from the jukebox that really brought us back, and many of the puzzles are also very thematic. The game starts in the restocking area, as you try to figure out the alarm code to get into the bar itself. They set this up nicely to introduce you to some ideas that will carry on throughout the rest of the experience. While there is some gating, much of the gameplay is non-linear. There was certainly a strong searching and observation component, with some rewarding connections to be made. Logic and physical manipulations are also key. It culminates in a nice meta-puzzle that draws on things from throughout the game. We’re suckers for tactile and physical manipulations and reveals, and "The Pinehurst" definitely delivered some fun ones. Before you begin, you get to pick the song that will play if you succeed. Hearing our selection (the 80’s classic “Wild Thing” by Tone Loc) come on was an awesome way to signal victory, kick off our own little celebratory dance party, and finish the game! 🧩 MISSED THE MARK We loved the silly, unique backstory to the room, but there is room for some narrative progression (who stole the "Schlitz" and why?!) and clarification of why you start by needing to figure out the alarm code. There could also be fun ways to incorporate the hint system into the story itself. There was one puzzle we got hung up on where we think the clue itself could be a bit more clear, but it also required us to do something that it felt like there were other indications that it would be a bad idea (we might break it). Talking to the owner afterwards, we understand why it was how it was, but we think there are options to smooth out the experience with this particular puzzle. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? If you’re out this way, "The Pinehurst" is well worth a visit, whether you are with family, friends, or other enthusiasts! Aside from some of the 80’s bar theme decor, we would consider this a family-friendly room (maybe ages 10+?), and you could bring inexperienced players to this one as well. We really appreciated the charm and playfulness of the game, the love the owners clearly put into it, the tactile interactions, and the feeling that we had really been dropped back into the 80’s. And, seriously, who doesn’t love being rewarded with their own personal dance party?! (Oh - they also gave us a teaser about the theme of their next room, and WE CAN’T WAIT! Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming announcements...) ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Free parking is available right behind the building (next to the main entrance).
