After being taken downstairs to the game area we were really impressed stepping into the room with how authentic this train crash appeared. The carriages and all the props looked really genuine. The diversity and style of puzzles were well thought out and encouraged a lot of team work to complete. We appreciated the dynamic flow that requires players to constantly move around the space, exploring, and utilizing information which may have been found earlier on. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK We had a slight question mark over how the story ended. We thought we were there to defuse a bomb, which we did find, however we escaped without having any actual interaction with it. It didn’t necessarily impact the experience negativity, but it did feel like there was a hole in the story. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? "Runaway Train" is a nonlinear room, so teams who want a dynamic and interactive experience will enjoy this challenge. Little did she know that looks can be deceiving and that the loving man that took her into his safe arms wasn’t so lovely as she once thought. What happened to the orphan girl? Video above is property of Mama Bazooka 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE Mama Bazooka has a fantastic waiting area with multiple table games, ping pong, and computer games to play… plus a stacked refreshments area with drinks and chocolates. I also helped myself to a cool ‘The Dome’ t-shirt! A professionally made video is played before the game to provide the back story and begins the immersion. The story does not get forgotten and remains prevalent throughout, providing closure by the end of the game. The set design is to a very high level. Only high-end props, furniture and special effects are used to ensure you are immersed as fully as possible. The scare factor level of the room is really well balanced. At the time of writing this review, I can clearly state that it is my favorite horror room, that does not make use of an actor. The atmosphere remains tense throughout and that, coupled with several jumpy moments, kept our adrenaline levels high. The puzzles are well struck and varied, always keeping the story and theme in consideration. They promote cooperation, exploration and out of the box thinking to complete. After the game concludes, you are welcomed into a private screening room where your GM will sit with you and revisit the best moments of your game, as captured by their cameras. This is a fantastic idea and something we hadn’t seen anywhere else; it was definitely appreciated! 🧩 MISSED THE MARK To pick fault with this game we really have to look at the small details. There was one puzzle which reused objects from a previous riddle. We would have preferred it if this puzzle would have required different objects instead. The result of this adjustment might even require one more puzzle to be added; which is never a bad thing! 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? If you like the idea of light role play and light interaction with an actor then this could be the game for you. The puzzles are not always easy, but this adrenaline filled escape room is highly recommended as a must play experience. We enjoyed everything about this game. Can you escape "The Dome"? 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE Mama Bazooka has a fantastic waiting area with multiple table games, ping pong, and computer games to play… plus a stacked refreshments area with drinks and chocolates. I also helped myself to a cool ‘The Dome’ t-shirt! The Dome smashes the boundaries of what we thought was possible to experience in an escape room. You will certainly believe you are hallucinating at times whilst the world is changing around you. No expense seems to have been sparred in creating one of the most memorable and immersive games in the world. The game is possible with less than four, but discouraged, and with good reason. The puzzles are quite expansive and require good teamwork to complete. This is certainly a case of the more brains the better. We played as a three and I would have definitely appreciated at least one person more. After the game concludes you are welcomed into a private screening room where your GM will sit with you and revisit the best moments of your game, as captured by their cameras. This is a fantastic idea and something we hadn’t seen anywhere else; it was definitely appreciated! 🧩 MISSED THE MARK The game starts off with, in our opinion, two of the hardest of all the puzzles inside. Teams wanting to witness something truly special should not miss this game. But ensure you are prepared with a strong team and at least four people, should escaping in time be important to you. The story is prevalent throughout, providing an immersive experience with special effects that wow and impress. The puzzles fit the theme and have a logical flow. We always appreciate puzzles that require more than one team member to complete, and this room has several of those. There are numerous elements of searching that allow you to spend more time appreciating the set design. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK There’s not too much to dislike in this room. As an experienced team we might have appreciated more challenging puzzles, but that is a personal preference. The chef is situated in a couple of the rooms, but only on a TV screen. The effect of his presence was therefore lost quite quickly. One way to elevate the experience and to heighten the tension would be to have a live actor. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This is a game which has a high level of synergy between the story and the puzzles, so despite its relative level of ease, it should satisfy all levels of experience. We were greeted by the school’s Headmaster who escorted us to our room and disciplined us for being unruly students. The actor did a great job staying in character and responding on point to our humor. A tense atmosphere is present, though it is not one of horror, but one of suspense, with the occasional scare to keep the adrenaline flowing. We found the puzzles to be very thematic and particularly enjoyed those which required teamwork to complete. We loved how they took us on a journey through many parts of the monastery, including a brief stint outside. The ending was well done and successfully closed the story loop, we exited with a smile on our faces. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Being an experienced team, we might have appreciated more complexity to the puzzles. Several of them used very basic logic to complete, making it occasionally feel like a room for beginners. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This is one of the top-rated rooms in the Netherlands and definitely worth playing, no matter what level you are. The room wasn’t particularly scary, despite how it might appear in the marketing, so hopefully the minor horror elements don’t deter people from playing. The setting of the game, taking place in a genuine monastery, heightens the level of immersion. This is also enhanced at the beginning by watching a short, professionally made video that dramatizes the story. There is a lot of variety with the puzzles, including light dexterity, observation and searching, deduction, and cooperation. The puzzles begin in a nonlinear format allowing larger or more experienced teams to split up and tackle different elements simultaneously, should they want to escape in a faster time. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK The room is now quite a few years old, and comparing it to the other rooms at this location it does feel it. The first room in particular seemed quite bland and doesn’t convey a high degree of the tension we had expected in the buildup. This is a Gen-1 room, and so the puzzles are also very basic with a lot of padlocks to open. Although the puzzles were all logical there wasn’t a lot of cohesion between them at times. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? If you are coming to Rock City Escape to play "Poppet" or "Soup du Jour", then it’s worth spending the extra hour to help free "Bloody Mary". The way the story kicks off is quite special and something rather unique. I wish more games could throw you in the deep-end this quickly! To get the most out of this experience, our advice would be to use the bathroom before you arrive. This will make the beginning more fluid and impactful. Unfortunately, we can’t discuss it more without potential spoilers. The room focuses heavily on story telling and development. There is numerous video content along the way which keeps the theme very much alive and maintains high levels of tension. One of the videos is connected directly to a puzzle and the actions you take during that time will help determine one of two possible endings. Having alternate endings is another unique aspect to this room. The room contains a few impressive special effects that provide a couple of ‘wow’ moments. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Although the puzzles made sense with the story and were logical to complete, we didn’t find them to be that fun to work through. It wasn’t that there was anything wrong with them, they just didn’t click with our team. The appearance of the rooms was ok, perhaps a little bland and dated. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? For teams who enjoy immersion and want to experience something a little different this could be worth a try. Time is of the essence, as the police are hot on the trail and could potentially compromise the investigation. Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The setting and story are well-established, providing players with a clear goal for the game. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK The hint system in the room was very poor. A hint comes to players on a 5-minute timer on a screen in the room. If you miss the hint, there is no recovery built into the game and the game assumes that you have moved on. When it comes to the puzzles in this room, the feeling of satisfaction upon successfully solving them may be hard to come by. The majority of the puzzles are heavily focused on word and reading comprehension. This means that players will need to pay close attention to details, analyze language, and think critically to decipher the solutions. As we approached the final puzzle, our team found ourselves uncertain if we had completed the room or not. The transition between the puzzles felt disconnected and disjointed. While the puzzles were tangentially related to the overarching theme, they lacked cohesion and failed to fully immerse players in the narrative. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? "Mafia" is a room with a simple storyline that follows the familiar trope. While the initial set-up of the room and story is fine, the puzzles and challenges throughout the game are largely uninteresting. Many of the puzzles are simplistic and do not require much thought or problem-solving, which can make the game feel dull and monotonous. Additionally, the hint system used in the game is subpar and frustrating. Instead of providing helpful and relevant clues to progress through the game, the hint system often led to confusion and resulted in having to leave the room and seek assistance from the game master. This can be disruptive to the flow of the game and detracts from the overall experience. While the "Mafia" escape room may have an intriguing concept and a decent set design, the lack of engaging puzzles and poor hint system made the experience feel underwhelming. This secret chamber was concealed behind a thick brick wall and turned out to be a long-forgotten barbershop. The reason for its bricked-up state remains shrouded in mystery. According to rumors, it may have been used for experiments conducted by Lord Cadavera himself (the owner of the manor). Adding to the enigma, the room emanates an intense magnetic field that frequently disrupts nearby computer systems. Just what lies behind that secret door and why are you going to the barber shop? The creativity and innovation in the industry truly shines when developers are able to bring new and fresh ideas to the table. The game master/character in charge of setting the scene did an excellent job of immersing us in a mysterious world where a seemingly ordinary barbershop could hold secrets and intrigue. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK One of the puzzles in the game seemed to malfunction during our play-through, which caused some frustration The final moments of the game fell short of our team's expectations, as we were left feeling underwhelmed by the conclusion after completing the last puzzle. The hint system in Ezkapaz could have been more immersive to match the level of immersion created by the game. While it effectively helped our team progress through the game, we were hoping for a more creative and immersive system that would have added to the overall experience. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? "le barbier" at Ezkapaz is a standout among the escape room industry, with a theme that is unlike anything I've ever seen before. The attention to detail is impressive, with the set design capturing the essence of a barber shop from the past. The puzzles themselves are varied, catering to different skill sets and interests, ranging from physical challenges to observational and logic-based puzzles. Solving them felt satisfying, and the game never felt too easy or too difficult. However, while the puzzles were enjoyable, the finale didn't quite live up to our expectations. It felt a bit underwhelming, lacking the climactic finish that we were hoping for. Despite this, the game's "twist" did leave an impression on us, and its effects lingered throughout the rest of our experience at Ezkapaz. Overall, "le barbier" is a challenging and fun room that will satisfy the cravings of any escape room enthusiast. Its unique theme and well-crafted puzzles make it a standout among the Montreal escape room scene. It's clear that the designers put effort and care into this aspect of the room. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Although the puzzles in the game were well designed and provided a decent challenge, they didn't necessarily feel like they were integral to the storyline or adding depth to the experience. The venue does an excellent job of immersing players in the world of the game, the hint system may not live up to the same standard of immersion. The hint system is similar to what you might find in other escape rooms, However, this does not detract significantly from the overall experience and enjoyment of the game. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? "Opus Luminum" is a game that excels in providing an immersive experience for its players. From the moment you walk up the stairs to the Ezkapaz manor, you are transported into a whole new world. Now miners from all over the globe are flocking to the area to see who can find it first. However, Dr. Woo was a crafty sort who enjoyed a good game, and they’ve left some challenges behind to ensure that whoever finds the gem is worthy. Are you up for the task? 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE This game is divided into two sections. The set in the initial phase is a beautiful, detailed rendition of a mine, in a Disney-esque kind of way! The seven dwarves would fit right in. There were a lot of fun and unique puzzles, many of which were highly thematic and rewarding to complete. And, for the most part, there was a nice flow to the game. What really set the game apart for us was the second phase, which occurs in complete darkness. Yep. We could not see a THING! Which means all of the puzzles relied on other senses, and they definitely all felt heightened. While we know there are other games out there with this kind of room, they’re not common, and it’s the first we’ve played. We adored the fresh challenge and the innovation in the puzzles, and the way it added a new dimension to our teamwork. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK The first room in particular is not too large and could get a bit crowded if you were at the max player size of 6. The lighting in the first phase is rather dim, which set the ambience but sometimes made it hard to read the digits on the locks. There was one puzzle in the first phase that had what is apparently an unusual hiccup, which meant we spent some time trying to solve while missing a piece. Some of the puzzles in the pitch black phase, while enjoyable to play, did not make as much sense thematically as those in the first section. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? Escaparium has a lot of incredible and creative rooms that are highly regarded. While we’ve only played 4 thus far, Golden Jubilee was actually our overall favorite (yes, even over the amazing Wardrobe for Sale) and an incredibly memorable experience. While we really appreciated the set and enjoyed some of the puzzles in the first phase, we absolutely LOVED the pitch-black section. It provided novelty and seemed to really elevate our teamwork - we were definitely in the flow! If you are traveling as a pair, it also felt like a perfect game for two enthusiasts, though the official minimum is 3. We highly recommend it, so long as everyone is comfortable in the dark. (There is also crawling in regular play of the game, but I believe there could be a workaround for this if needed.) And plan to take a day at Escaparium if you can! With so many fantastic games in one place, plus the bar/cafe with tabletop games…there’s a ton to do here! ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO There seems to be plenty of free parking in a lot right outside the building. There is a large waiting area, bathrooms, and - most excitingly - a full game cafe and bar! We had some tasty nibbles between games, though not quite enough time to dip into one of the ones they had available. While this initially adds a sense of physicality and urgency to the experience, the puzzles within this segment tend to drag on. As the crawling continues, the novelty wears off, and players may start to feel fatigued or uncomfortable. The prolonged nature of these puzzles can lead to a sense of impatience, with players longing to stand up and continue the game in a more conventional manner. The game presented a few challenges with its puzzles. One notable issue was a language barrier, as a puzzle was in French without any English translations.
