Will you work together or will you go your separate ways? May the best witch win! Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE Being a fairytale lover, this was a dream come true. We were able to experience spell-making, mystical worlds, and enchanted items all in an hour's time. What a cool concept! We've played "good versus evil" types of games before none that had this many twists and turns. This game had us solve things separately, work as a team and finally, face each other! The puzzles incorporated various challenges that involved logic, physical obstacles, and even our senses. The set design was simply magical. Instead of going through an ordinary door, this game actually made us feel like we've physically traveled to another destination. The lighting and special effects made the story world come to life. My favorite part (it was difficult to pick one since I enjoyed everything) of this game was the ending. What an adrenaline rush! 🧩 MISSED THE MARK There was a prop in the game that was quite sensitive. Perhaps a signage or clue on what the players should do might help. One of the puzzles had a super long sequence. Perhaps for a larger group, it might be easier as more people could do the searching but for two people it felt like a time-eater puzzle. A lot of times we didn't know if we had triggered something in another part of the room or if something had opened. Being two people, it was difficult to cover a lot of areas. An added sound or light alert would be able to resolve this issue. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? Before entering the rooms, we were given a choice of good or evil. Being that the "good side" looked all glittery and pink, it was a no-brainer for me to choose this side. It was definitely the "sweeter" side in my opinion. There were a couple of extra puzzles and for people with poor eyesight, this side was a lot brighter than the "evil side". This game was so much fun that when I got the key at the end, I didn't want to leave. "Spellcraft" is a whimsical, breathtaking, and enchanting production. They control the booze, the streets, and the cash. Their reach is long, even pulling in most of the cops. So, who’s going to bring them down? You are! The Commissioner has pulled together a special squad of honest officers, and you’ve made the cut. After spending months working your way into the mob’s inner circle, tonight is the night you’ll gather the proof to finally take them down. 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE As soon as we entered Tulleys Escape Rooms we were met by several warm and welcoming GM’s who guided us through the normal formalities and chatted with us about our day, travels, and escape room experiences. They clearly care about their guests and are passionate about what they do! Before the game officially started, we watched a professionally made and acted video. In order to keep our attention toward the screen, and to not be distracted by our exciting surroundings, the lights were off, which is a thoughtful choice. The video gets a special mention here because it manages to integrate the game rules and story in an entertaining and humorous way, remaining in our thoughts long into the adventure. As with all of Tulleys' games, the construction value and attention to detail with the game’s theming is exceptionally high. The number of decorative items and props is well balanced; the amount is enough to provide an immersive atmosphere, without the space feeling overcrowded or too sparce. The elements also felt authentic to the time period, such as with the inclusion of an old-school safe, period gambling games, and kegs of booze, and interesting to engage with. The game area is much larger than we had anticipated, giving us not only ample space to move about in, but also several new room reveals. The abundance of space is great for larger teams to play in without tripping over one another. Each room felt purposeful to the gangster’s hideout and made sense to our story. The game flow was interesting, because although the intention is for it to be played linearly, there is the possibility for a team to gain access to a side-room earlier than the story intends; this is what happened to us. We appreciated this new dynamic because it opened the game into a more nonlinear format. We were informed after the game that game masters will occasionally stop this from happening if they feel a team would be more successful by not deviating from the linear flow; likely to those less experienced teams. Overall, the puzzles were thematic and in-keeping with the 1920’s time period. Most of what we did involved searching for and collecting specialty items, many of which would be used much later in the game. Staying organized with what was found and used was important because the game involves a lot of interaction with the props. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK The ending was a little anti-climactic, there was no special effect or big reveal, plus the story on the website made a small reference to the possibility of our ‘cover being blown’. So that had me thinking that the plot might evolve with a plot twist somehow, which sadly it didn’t. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This is definitely a game worth playing, no matter if you are new to escape rooms or a tried and tested veteran. "The Outfitters" manages to combine immersive set design and thematic puzzles in a way that produces a truly engaging experience. The abundance of puzzles does make the game challenging to complete within the hour, but the game master is always there to guide you when needed. ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Parking is available on site for free. The location is also accessible by bus. There is a lobby area with comfortable seating and drink for sale, including alcoholic beverages. Some escape room related merchandise is also available for purchase, such as hoodies and pins. The escape rooms at Tulleys is part of a bigger complex which features seasonal events at Christmas, Halloween, Easter, and other times of the year. Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE At first, it was challenging to discern the extent of what was "hidden" within this compact space. However, as we delved deeper, a significant amount of puzzles was revealed to us in a good way. The game featured elements that prompted us to reflect on real-life scenarios, and we greatly enjoyed utilizing the props creatively to solve the puzzles. While many traditional puzzles were akin to those found in other escape rooms, there were also several innovative ones that we had not encountered before. The instructions and objectives were clear from beginning to end. One of our favorite experiences was using a few props to create something that ultimately revealed a delightful surprise after solving a riddle. The creator excelled in designing multi-step puzzles, allowing us to divide tasks and collaborate effectively to solve the final meta puzzle. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK There were some hidden items that could be really difficult to find without a "clue" as it's not typical for a player to look in that certain way. The GM also have informed that many players uses a clue on that which we feel shouldn't be counted as a clue but did delay our game progress. The ending could use a bit more celebratory element that was build into the room rather than the GM's congratulatory ending. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? We were delighted to stumble upon this awesome game in Aarhus, Denmark. We didn't expect such creativity and so many puzzles packed into such a small area. Even though it didn't use a lot of high-tech stuff, every prop and puzzle fit the storyline perfectly and was super fun to solve. We've played thousands of escape rooms, so it's rare to find something new, but this one had some cool, innovative way of using the props that we hadn't seen before. Some of them even made us rethink if they could really be used in real life, which made the game even more immersive. Just imagine what the creator could do with a bigger budget and more space! If you're ever in Aarhus, you’ve got to check this game out. I bet you'll be just as surprised as we were! As her royal scribes’, she has tasked you to search Vesputin’s study to find the amulet and expose his treason. 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE For a location that doubles as a bowling alley, the set design blew me away. They definitely pulled out all the stops to make it feel like a medieval room. I honestly felt it had a Disney theme park feel to it (as the owner said they worked with a former Disney designer to help create the room). Even all the locks were old brass padlocks. I was worried a little at first that we were only allowed “3 hints” but the GM was fully dedicated to us and monitored us through the game. When it looked like we were stuck, they would send us some nudges on the hint screen to get us on our way. The puzzles fit well into the theme with a lot of tech, which made the reveals more exciting. They also paid attention to a lot of small details that really made a difference. The fanfare and effects that went off at the end definitely made us feel like champions! 🧩 MISSED THE MARK There were searching puzzles in the room that seemed tedious and difficult for a low-lit room as well as hiding key items in spots of the room that did not seem obvious to search. There was a puzzle that required some outside knowledge to complete. We felt that a majority of people would know the information required but for those that do not, it would be nice to have a clue to guide them. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? The Sorcerer’s Study is a game that will be a fun experience for any enthusiast, but use caution if you use this as an introduction game for people who have never done escape rooms before as some of the puzzles seemed on the difficult side. The fact that there was some fun, “I can’t believe that just happened!” reveals really made this room stand out. We would suggest this room for about 4 to 5 people as the puzzles were fairly linear but it did have a puzzle that could be worked on right away that was needed at the end (just make sure you search EVERYWHERE in the room). If you do end up with a larger group, you could also take turns playing the escape room as the others are bowling. He has set up a series of challenges to test you, and you never know what else you might stumble upon… 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE While I enjoy a good heist or a wizarding world as much as the next person, I really appreciate unique themes. "Puppeteer’s Workshop" delivers on this front with a fun, charming, and (at times) mildly creepy theme and set design. Entering the room to see the marionettes on the stage, with the beautifully detailed backdrop, is a fabulous way to start the game! There were several particularly fun and creative puzzles in this game! As with "The Eventide Departure", thoroughly searching and observation is critical. The GM actually has the ability to somewhat adjust the difficulty of one puzzle based on group experience, which is nice, and there is also a very cool, unexpected surprise towards the end that we really enjoyed! All of the puzzles and gameplay flowed well, and everything was very fair and cleanly designed, making it really satisfying to experience. We felt there was a nice combination of traditional locks and tech-based interactions. There was some progression of the story throughout the game through audio messages and some items that you discover along the way. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK While I did really enjoy the puzzles in this game (and our group often worked on them together), there were none that really required or strongly encouraged cooperation, which I always appreciate in escape rooms (if you prefer to work independently, this could be a plus for you)! Given the cool theme, I also would have loved the opportunity to do a bit more “puppeteering” as a player. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? We had a fabulous time immersing ourselves in the puppeteer’s world! It is an easier game; our group of 3 finished in about 34 minutes, and we got stuck for quite a while on one puzzle that I suspect some of you would solve quickly. This makes it a perfect game for beginners or smaller groups! For enthusiasts, it is a great room to be able to just relax, savor the atmosphere, and appreciate the well-crafted puzzles. Puzzle Break is open to those 12+ (with adult supervision), and in normal play of the game some mobility is required, but I think there could be a workaround if needed. While parts of the theme were a bit dark/occult, the overall gameplay is definitely not scary, assuming you don’t have a general fear of dolls (apparently known as pediophobia) - including rather creepy ones… In fact, overall, I found it quite playful, with some delightful details. If you’re looking for a unique theme with clean and creative puzzle design and some really charming elements, I think you will enjoy the "Puppeteer’s Workshop"! ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Puzzle Break (in Belltown) has two lobby/seating areas (one with some small physical puzzles to play with), and bathrooms available. There are designated areas within the rooms themselves to leave your things. You do access their space via stairs. The reputation that this company has built for themselves seems to be pretty consistent. Obviously, we wanted to find out for ourselves and draw our own conclusion without any influence from others. We were fortunate enough to meet with the owner/ developer to learn more about the company. 13th Hour Haunted House was created 8 years ago and the Escape Rooms was introduced 4 years ago. What was once a farm house is now a large warehouse facility that houses a two-floor haunted house and 5 escape rooms with a 6th one on the way. In regards to the lobby/ waiting area, there's no seating available. If it isn't that busy, it's not that big of deal since the wait time isn't that long. However, during peak season some seating would be beneficial for customers. We didn't deduct that when rating the lobby decor due to the fact that they have some really amazing set designs. The customer service was phenomenal. The owner/ developer was extremely professional and dedicated to his craft. The staff was also very hospitable. There is a parking lot right out in front with plenty of spaces. 13th Hour has three haunted houses with one of them ran in the pitch dark. For those people who like haunted houses but don't like to be touched by the actors, there's an option to opt out. They will provide glow sticks for the people that don't mind being touched. The haunted houses are not open all the time, so please check their websites for their special events. Today, we are scheduled to try to (3) rooms and the first one is their newest room - "The Grand Parlor". On the website, "The Grand Parlor" room specifies that there's a minimum requirement of 4 people in order to play. We recommend that as well, since there's a lot of teamwork and communication involved in order to succeed. We managed to escape with only a couple of seconds left and we had 4 people total (2 of us and 2 other people). The puzzle challenges were extremely creative from beginning to end with a fully immersive set design to complement the storyline. We knew what to expect prior to visiting the location which set the bar really high. Fortunately for us, 13th Hour did not disappoint! Next we are experiencing one of their older rooms - "The Great Room". Immediately after successfully escaping "The Grand Parlor", we decided to try 13th Hour Haunted House and Escape Rooms' older room - "The Great Room". The "Great Room" was designed with the same level of quality and decor as "The Grand Parlor". The story line was very interesting and definitely correlated with puzzle designs. In comparison to "The Grand Parlor", you can tell that "The Great Room" was an earlier escape room design mainly by the puzzles that were offered in the room. Although there is a tremendous level of integration from the earlier to the newer, "The Great Room" did not disappoint. The only thing that we felt might be challenging for the players is the height requirement for some of the puzzles. Other than that, this room is extremely immersive and entertaining. We managed to escape with just two people and plenty of time to spare. The next room that we are attempting to escape from is - "The Dungeon". The next room that we are attempting to escape from is "The Dungeon". Normally, "The Dungeon" has a requirement of 4-6 people due to the fact that each player starts off locked up inside of a cell. You start off your game blindfolded in the lobby/ waiting area and then you are brought to your cell to be chained up. Since it was just us two, we knew we had our work cut out for us. The second that the blindfolds came off, we were victims inside of a copycat serial killer's lair trying to escape. The room was simply amazing! From the level of detail and creativity that was implemented into the set design to the technology and structure behind the puzzles, this room had it all. Not to mention, the accompaniment of a bone-chilling story line to set the tone. Out of the 3 that we did today ("The Grand Parlor", The Great Room" and "The Dungeon"), "The Dungeon" was our favorite! We managed to escape with just the two of us with about 7 minutes to spare. 13th Hour has two other rooms hat we have yet to try - "John Hayden's Room" and "The Cookhouse" and another one on the way. Even though this was the first room they designed, the décor is still very consistent in terms of quality. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK We escaped but did not feel that we accomplished our mission. We are unsure who his next victim is and why the final puzzle freed us from the room. It would be great if that could be incorporated into the story line. However, we did have a lot of fun even as enthusiasts as some were still quite clever the way they were designed. Two people can definitely take on this room if you have played escape rooms before. The actual props are not “dirty” which we appreciate very much. We have been to locations where they're justifying that the set design is supposed to be dirty, but all in all, it’s just not sanitary. Most items are bolted down which eliminated a lot of red herrings. Lots of fun moments of discovery. One particular prop resembled real life situations with sound and action. We were pleasantly surprised at how it was incorporated in the puzzle. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK The story was a bit vague. We are not sure why we had to do the ending puzzle and the reveal was also just a give away on the code. It would be great if they could incorporate a “why” and “what” did we do to earn our escape. A few hard to see moments for me due to height for some puzzles but Brandon was able to assist with that so having a taller person does help in this case but it would be great if height could be considered when designing puzzles. Some music elements could help with the immersion especially in the latter part of the game. We are unsure why we had to do a particular puzzle in a “together” way as there were no clues telling us to do so. We did have to get a hint for that, but it would be great if there was some sort of logic behind this. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This was quite a challenge for two people. We were one puzzle away from getting out. There was a lot of puzzles and searching elements that added an extra level of difficulty to the room. We recommend a minimum of 4 people for this room. As soon as you walk inside, you feel like you’ve been transported to a killer’s lair (in this case an old farmhouse). And yes, we mean an entire FARMHOUSE! The details of the room all the way down to the washed color paint used, lighting, authentic household items, and other amazing décor that we can’t spoil for you. Due to the ceiling height of the warehouse space, there were props used in there that we have not seen at other escape rooms. It was great to see some originality in creativity of how they design their rooms. Love the fact that all the puzzles were different and were all closely connected with the story line. Out of all the rooms we’ve done at 13th hour, this one had my favorite ending. 13th hour always tries to add in that little “personal touch” to the game which makes it very enjoyable for the player to discover when they are done. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK We were confused on how one of the puzzles worked in the latter part of the game as we we're not sure if we messed up the starting point or not and if it was correctly done after we followed the order. The owner did inform us that he can bypass it internally if he saw that we did the right steps. We feel that perhaps there could be a hint written somewhere to establish the starting point so that there won't be any need to bypass and all the players can do it correctly by themselves. One of the props used could be more authentic to the storyline as currently it did feel a bit out of the story. The owner did inform he has plans to change this in the future. Keypads were used in certain areas of the puzzles but perhaps something else could fit the story line better being that it’s set in an old farmhouse. A bit of music could add a little more eerie feeling to the room. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? If you like escape rooms with great set designs, but on a much larger scale, you have to play at 13th Hour Escape. It will give you a whole new perspective on escape games. Teamwork is essential in this game. Playing with just the two of us there was a lot of running around. We recommend at least 4 people for this room to be able to comfortably designate players for a few puzzles. There are normally no live actors in the room unless it’s a special holiday so you may want to ask about that before booking the room if that’s a concern. Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE Love the set design using a "gateway" as a transition for the dramatic scenery change. It actually felt like a magic portal. The use of lighting in the first area felt "cooler" due to the blue accents and then as you enter into the tomb, it actually provided a "warmer" feel due to the torch lights. The puzzles in the first room felt more futuristic and techy and when transitioned into the latter part of the game in the tomb, it was more Indiana Jones feel with some added physical puzzles. This stuck with the storyline. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK This room wasn't build by 13th Hour Escape and you'll know immediately if you've played their other games. One puzzle was rathe difficult to play as a two player game and the tech used wasn't what we're used to in their other games. One audio puzzle also felt like it needed to be more clear as two of the outputs were super low. 13th Hour Escape's other games are normally much bigger than this room. We had to change our mindset when playing this game as the immersion aspect felt lacking in comparison to the others. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? 13th hour is planning to implement their own touch to this room in the new year. We can't wait to check what they'll do to make this a part of their current escape room family. Regardless, this company is a must visit if you're in the NJ area. Our top recommended rooms are "The Trophy Room" and "The Grand Parlor". You don't be disappointed! Starting off with a monochromatic color scheme which transports us onto a farm in Kansas to something even more spectacular later on (not giving away anything, you guys will have to go experience this yourselves). "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" is truly an immersive experience. The sound of a tornado coming really built up the suspense of the storyline. Because "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" is a familiar story to most, you really needed to implement all the details from the story. This game was based from the book and we were truly impressed by the way the game designer was able to capture the characters, props and the entire experience. 13th Hour Escape Rooms spared no expense on the props. What we already thought was big, was made even bigger. The puzzles were not extremely difficult, but fit perfectly with the storyline. Everything that we received or had to use was somehow associated with what happened to a certain character. There was a jaw-dropping moment in this room that we had the pleasure of seeing how it operated after the game. After playing 700+ rooms, we probably only seem 1 other game that was able to complete this transition. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK There was just one puzzle that we wish had a little more indication on what it was operating on when we pressed it. Since there's no sound or light, we actually thought it was broken until we got the hint. It would be cool if the hint allowed the player to discover this fun reveal themselves. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" has something for everyone to enjoy whether you're a fan of the classic story or just looking to immerse yourself into another world. 13th Hour Escape Rooms did an amazing job at providing a perfect balance of an escape room and an immersive experience (although I would say this definitely feels more like an adventure). This company continuous to surprise us with high quality games and innovative ideas. However, while the environment succeeds in immersing players, the puzzles themselves lack the same level of depth and innovation. They feel somewhat formulaic and fail to leave a lasting impression or significantly advance the storyline. While there are moments of intrigue and challenge, they don't fully capitalize on the potential for immersive storytelling within the prison setting. Additionally, despite the intriguing premise of a prison break, Death Row struggles to stand out in a sea of similar escape room experiences.
