After discovering an object from the future has ended up as a prize in Ancient Rome’s Colosseum, you know you need to stop any gladiator from winning this prize, as it could change the foundations of our world as we know it. Your agency has tasked you to enter the Colosseum as a gladiator and win the competition. Sounds easy, right? Except for the dark caverns, lions, and the fight to the death part of a dueling... Time to screw your courage to the sticking place and take up the challenge! The world depends on you!

"Escape the Colosseum" is a point and click adventure using Telescape, much like the previous digitized escape games made by Escape the Crate. This is a “re-imagining” of their third box (June/July 2017) so if you have played any of their early physical games this might seem similar but they did add some surprises.

The game begins with a well made introduction video and tutorial that helps you get a better sense of the story and what you need to do. Blue lock icons will be visible in Telescape to let you know which items need a number or letter code while a puzzle piece icon will let you know that word associated with the icon (and the item in the same space) need to be combined to reveal clues and answers, which is a neat feature I enjoy seeing in these games.

There is a built-in hint system into the Telescape to aid your puzzling as you will not have a gamemaster while you play.

"Escape the Colosseum" is puzzling generally relies on you uncovering number and letter codes to open jars, chests, and ultimately fighting your way through duels. I liked the variety of the puzzles but I will say for new players, it may seem a bit overwhelming when you start. Most of the puzzles benefit from dividing and conquering as having multiple players fiddling with the same puzzle on Telescape can create errors. The puzzles themselves involve pattern recognition, cipher codes, logic, and tracking but all of it is self-contained within the game so I never felt confused - the clues I needed were usually in a different room. This game definitely works for groups who enjoy talking about the puzzles while they play so I encourage you to share what you uncover as what you see in one room may be the clue someone needs in another. If you are playing solo, either write notes or take photos so you aren’t jumping between rooms too much.

"Escape the Colosseum" is a good online escape experience for players looking to share, explore, and work together even while apart. There is a good length to the experience and plenty to keep you going that is scaffolded and laid out well as you move throughout the adventure. The story is light but if you’re all about the puzzles, I feel this does a great job feeding the puzzle fix.
