As The Joker tells us the story here, Harley Quinn is back working at Arkham Asylum as a psychiatrist, treating Gotham City’s most infamous villains. When strange incidents and a string of crimes point to the anti-hero, Anarky, Harley finds there may be more than meets the eye. Along the way, Harley will team up with some unexpected allies to solve a bigger story and save Gotham.

This box has quite a presence. It’s huge, heavy and beautiful. Flipping the box open, there are 12 different files and what looks to be a box, but we feel this will have lots of different secrets hidden inside.

Downloading and opening the companion app, the tutorial was very detailed. It guided us in how to set things up, what we needed and the ideal setup to get the most out of the experience. While the box does advertise that there is both an iOS and Android app, only the iOS app is available, meaning an Apple device is required to play.

Playing the game, the narrative and presentation was astonishing. The story of Harley Quinn and her high stakes investigation mixed with the top tier voice acting, beautiful animation, and quality soundtrack drew us in completely. The quality of the narrative is something that we easily would have read in a graphic novel or watched in an animated movie.

What stood out in this game for us, was the execution of the augmented reality (AR). Having played other AR escape games, this one blew us away. Rather than using it as a simple gimmick, we got to build downtown Gotham City and interact with it through the app for puzzles and narrative. Things were animated and we got to click through the city. This experience set the bar high for how AR should be used in tabletop games. Another thing we enjoyed was that the game is broken up into sections and chapters, making it easy to revisit past puzzles and areas to check out the AR again or review old puzzles.

The box was packed with content, and most of the puzzles blended physical components with digital elements. The puzzles were approachable for new puzzle solvers but still fun for enthusiasts, which helped maintain the game’s momentum, so we never felt stalled. There was also a lot of variety throughout. We especially liked that each solution answered a question, with some punny wordplay.

The hint system was clear, accessible, and well tiered. It provided helpful nudges without immediately giving away the solution. On the flip side, it does not give you the solution at all so even if you go through all the hints, you will still need to solve the puzzle on your own. We also appreciated the option to skip a puzzle and continue the story, which is helpful for players who want to keep moving forward and return to try out the puzzle later.

We binged-played "The Arkham Asylum Files: Panic in Gotham City" in one sitting, and we cannot imagine experiencing it any other way. The story, animation and voice acting felt completely cinematic, while the puzzles struck a good balance of being approachable without being too easy. The highlight overall though was the game’s use of AR, letting us interact with downtown Gotham, puzzle components, and key narrative in a way that was meaningful rather than gimmicky. Two of us tackled this game and loved every minute as we both got to be part of it all. We feel up to four people could play as there were times, we had to hover over the iPad together for puzzles or narrative. This game is an absolute must play if you are a Batman fan, puzzle enthusiast and especially for anyone who is both.
