- CU Adventures in Time & Space - "Game Night"
LOCATION: Urbana, Illinois, USA Photo above is property of CU Adventures in Time & Space Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME: Game Night 📅 DATE PLAYED: May 14, 2026 🎬 GENRE: Adventure 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 2 ppl): 6/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS: 4-8 ppl 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME: 60 Mins. 💰 PRICE: $32.00/ pp (4 ppl), $27.00/ pp (5-8 ppl) ☎️ BOOKING TYPE: Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED?: Yes 📖 THE STORY You’ve gathered at your buddy’s house for the DnD night…you think this might finally be the session you complete your 6-month campaign! But his annoying little brother has hidden all the pieces somewhere...can you find them all and get your quest back on track? 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE Strong NPC interactions: Our GM was fantastic. They did a great game intro as our buddy, the Dungeon Master, as well as playing another in-game character. They balanced humor, drama, and guidance, and did a fabulous job improv-ing off their interactions with us. Immersive early-game reveals: There are two moments in the first section that were particularly memorable. One very much brought us back to our youth in the 80’s, while the other pivots into absurdist fantasy. We were grinning like we just rolled a nat 20. Excellent environmental progression: The game begins in very retro 80’s nostalgia, with some very authentic touches, before expanding into the fantastical realm. The attention to detail, scale of some elements, and overall progression feels surprisingly epic. Unexpected structure: Midway through the experience, the game delivers a nice twist – like any good adventure campaign. It was a fun variation of a fairly common mechanism, which we really enjoyed. Escalating stakes and momentum: The game steadily ramps up the scale and thematic stakes as you progress. It was hard for us to anticipate what might come next, but we were always excited to see how the story would develop! 🧩 MISSED THE MARK It was a fabulous game, and as mentioned above we really appreciated the way the game progressed overall. But, for us, the ending was the least rewarding section, even though the set, effects, and concept were all really cool. Partly, we were less clear on the reason behind our task, but we also found the challenges in that section less fulfilling. Not that it was bad, it just felt less climactic after so many satisfying moments earlier on. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? "Game Night" is totally radical, dude. It’s hard to believe that it was originally a pop-up for GenCon! Although it’s now been modified as a permanent installation, it still shows that CU Adventures doesn’t do anything half-assed and has incredibly high standards. It captures both the 80’s nostalgia and the fantasy of DnD perfectly. There’s no need to be familiar with the roleplaying game, but there are plenty of nods to appreciate if you are. While it still played quite well at two, this is one that is good for bigger groups, with a number of opportunities for individual roles and tasks. The actor interactions also really bring a lot to the table here. They’re generally brief but fun and don’t require a lot of players, making it a good introduction to playing with actors (and more approachable for those who aren’t a fan). It’s playful and fantastical, with plenty of surprises along the way. So grab your party members and come see if you can come out on top in this epic game night! Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Private lot with a good amount of parking. The generous lobby/waiting area where you check in has both shirts for sale and a creative, co-operative version of tetris you can play. There are bathrooms and a water cooler available. There are no lockers, but you can leave your things in the rooms themselves. On the other side of the building, you’ll find Parcadia – a very cool mini-golf experience with a tavern, a mini puzzle-hunt, and lots more in the works! Across the street there is also a food hall with a variety of options. - 60 to Escape (Gurnee) - "Starship: Final Frontier"
LOCATION: Gurnee, Illinois, USA Photo above is property of 60 to Escape Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME: Starship: Final Frontier 📅 DATE PLAYED: May 15, 2026 🎬 GENRE: Sci-Fi 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 2 ppl): 6/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS: 2-6 ppl 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME: 60 Mins. 💰 PRICE: $40.00 - $45.00/ pp (depending on # of players) ☎️ BOOKING TYPE: Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED?: Yes 📖 THE STORY You’re embarking on an intergalactic journey and put into cryosleep, expecting to awaken in a half century at a bold new world. However, something’s gone dreadfully wrong, and the ship has woken you…now you find out that you’re on a collision course with the sun! Can you and your team turn things back around? 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE Spacey, futuristic environment: There were some cool props, décor elements, and interactions on the ship that helped make you feel like you were really there. One, in particular, was quite entrancing and we could have gazed at it a long time…which we kind of did, as a search fail left us stuck in the small entry room for much longer than we should have been! Subtle tie-ins: As with many of 60 to Escape’s games, you’ll find a number of Easter egg references to the company, staff, and their other games. (For example, Calastof is a mix of the two owners’ names). We appreciate these personal details and how they can tie together aspects of what are otherwise very disparate worlds across their experiences. Clear goals: There’s a nice checklist of duties you need to take care of to get the ship back up and running so you can avoid burning yourselves to a crisp! This clear structure helps to focus your attention right away and clearly indicates when you’ve accomplished something, so you can see how you’re progressing through the main section of the game. Fosters communication: As with many of 60 to Escape’s games, there are several well-implemented split information puzzles, providing great opportunities across multiple spaces for teamwork and communication. They even have a built-in speaker and microphone system between the two most distant areas to keep it easy to communicate from afar! 🧩 MISSED THE MARK One fiddly bit: There was one slightly finicky puzzle that led to a bit of frustration. However, it would have been easier with more players, and it was still a good test of teamwork and communication! 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? "Starship: Final Frontier" is a great game for larger groups, with lots of opportunities for collaboration. It’s a very tech-based room, with plenty of futuristic gadgets to play with! And you’ll need to have a keen eye, as there’s some tricky searching to be done. You’ll also have power to determine your fate with a choice at the end. So, if you’ve always dreamed of joining NASA (though…probably without the flying-into-the-sun part…), now’s your chance to hop on the spaceship and take control! ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO This location is inside the Gurnee Mills Mall (so plenty of free parking), to the left of the food court when you enter through entrance J. The lobby/waiting area where you check in has both shirts and some mainstream tabletop puzzle games for sale. There are bathrooms available. There are no lockers, but there are hooks and a spot on the floor in each room where you can leave your things. - Find and Seek - "The Mystery at the Majestic Theatre"
LOCATION: Vancouver, BC, Canada Photo above is property of Find and Seek Photo above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME: The Mystery at the Majestic Theatre 📅 DATE PLAYED: May 14, 2026 🎬 GENRE: Mystery, Magic 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 4 Players): 5/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS: Up to 10 ppl 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME: 60 Mins. 💰 PRICE: CAD $39.99/PP ☎️ BOOKING TYPE: Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED?: Yes 📖 THE STORY Commissioned by the time-traveling agency under the command of Magnus, your team must retrieve a significant artifact: a lost necklace concealed within the historical Majestic Theater. This legendary venue, once a proving ground for aspiring magicians, serves as the setting for your infiltration. By pinpointing a temporal convergence, you have gained access to a moment in the theater's past that aligns with reports of unnatural activity. It is your objective to investigate the theater, navigate its secrets, and recover the relic. 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The puzzle trajectory is logical and follows a predominantly linear structure. Transitions between challenges are seamless, supported by effective signposting that ensures participants remain oriented without feeling overwhelmed. Ranging from easy to medium, the complexity is well-calibrated. While seasoned enthusiasts will find the mechanics intuitive, the room serves as an ideal introductory challenge for novices seeking their first immersive gaming experience. The latter half of the experience features sophisticated reveals. These moments are integrated intuitively, surfacing critical information in unexpected areas that significantly enhance player discovery and immersion. Hidden objects are designed with finesse, placed in plain sight with subtle guidance. This creates a rewarding "aha!" moment that feels balanced and satisfying rather than frustrating. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK The room's 'puzzle-in-a-set' design prioritizes mechanical gameplay over narrative, creating a disconnected experience that fails to deliver the promised theatrical immersion. Although the environment shows its age with a dated and 'grungy' aesthetic as part of the company's older game catalog, all equipment and set pieces remain fully operational and reliable. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? "Mystery at the Majestic Theater" may be an older title, but it remains one of the most thoughtfully designed and expansive experiences in the company's catalog. Its puzzles are accessible and logically paced, making it an excellent entry point for new hobbyists and a perfect, frustration-free choice for families. While the narrative integration could be tighter—some story elements feel slightly disjointed—this minor critique does not diminish the overall gameplay quality. If you are looking for a substantial, puzzle-forward adventure that rewards collaboration and focus, this is a fantastic room to experience. ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Third floor of a shopping center Wheelchair accessible No washrooms, closest washroom is in the nearby food court Photos above are property of Find and Seek (If you do decide to try this game, give us a shoutout or tag us on social media so we know you heard it from "ESCAPETHEROOMers"!)
