Photo above provided by The Curious Correspondence Club Company: The Curious Correspondence Club Game: Chapter III: The Tinker's Trinket Country: Canada 🇨🇦 Language: English Type of Game: Puzzles By Mail 📬 Genre: Mystery Date Played: 11/28/2020 Difficulty (based on 2 players): 7.5/10 Size of Team: Unlimited (Age 12+) Time: Unlimited (Suggested: 60-90 Minutes) Price : $21.95 (free shipping in North America); Monthly Subscription: $19.95/Yearly Subscription: $179 🆃🅷🅴 🆂🆃🅾🆁🆈 As we continue our journey from the last chapter, we find ourselves in a busy market. Cautiously navigating through the hectic crowd, we find ourselves inside a Tinker's Workshop. The old man at the workshop seems to be hiding something...perhaps a long lost secret? 🆃🅷🅴 ❞🅻🅾🅾🅺🆂❞ Similar to the previous games, the game components came in a pretty envelope with a sticker particular to this chapter. I did notice that they've improved on the glue that they've used from the previous envelopes as it's much easier to rip open how without getting the envelope destroyed. You'll want to be careful when opening up the envelope as the storyline is printed on the inside of it. The game components include: 1 leather pouch, 1 reversible workstation/patent certificate, 1 newspaper clipping, 3 invention schematics and 1 mechanical device. Photos above provided by The Curious Correspondence Club 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 The Curious Correspondence Club has a great writer. We are able to clearly visualize the story setting once we started to read the back story. This one in particular not only provided visual sensations but also audio and smell. We were able to sense everything as we "walked" down the alleyways. From the first look, you might be scared from all the gears and schematics as it looked like only an engineer would be able to complete this game. Once you understood what you're looking for and follow the clues that pertains to that specific puzzle number, you should be able to figure out the solution. If you still have issues, there's a detailed hint system on their website. We really loved this game. From the design concept to how we're able to utilize the components to formulate a solution, there were "wow" moments throughout the game play. 🆃🅷🅴 🅿🆄🆉🆉🅻🅴🆂 The puzzles really took us by surprise in this game. Initially we thought it was going to be a lot of decoding (and there was a bunch) but not in the way we imagined. Sticking with the idea of watches and gears, the puzzle design perfectly utilized those components to reveal their secrets. You should pay attention to every piece of paper (even ones you think might not be important) as there were a lot of hidden reveals. The physical construction aspect of the game pieces has always been a favorite feature of ours and The Curious Correspondence Club definitely outdid themselves with this one. Photos above provided by ESCAPETHEROOMers 🅲🅻🅾🆂🅸🅽🅶 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 This was our favorite game from The Curious Correspondence Club so far. The graphics, storyline, and puzzles flawlessly integrated with each other. There were a lot of surprises we didn't anticipate. It was great that they thought of the little details in the game piece designs to make them work without needing additional tools from the players. Now we're very excited for Chapter 4. What will we be making next time? (If you do decide to try this game, give us a shoutout or tag us on social media so we know you heard it from " ESCAPETHEROOMers "!) The artifact is definitely hidden somewhere in those tents. From the message we heard on the radio, we only have an hour before the enemies return back to the camp grounds... 🆃🅷🅴 ❞🅻🅾🅾🅺🆂❞ As always, we love the packaging. You can refer to our previous reviews for details. This chapter had 1 reversible arithmascope body, 1 chapter envelope, 5 reversible tents, 2 scope lenses, 2 scope drums, 1 reversible camp mats, 2 invention schematics, 1 flashlight bulb and 1 ticker's note. Photos above provided by The Curious Correspondence Club 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 With all of the games from The Curious Correspondence Club, we always feel that we're trying to recreate the scene from the backstory. This chapter felt closest to reality in terms of what we're able to "build" out. Through the subtle hints on the memo paper, we're able to follow the character's actions as he descends to the camp grounds. Once he reaches the ground, we're able to assist him by making tools that he'll need on the mission. There were a lot of assembling needed for this mission. The only complaint we had was the fact that some insertions kept falling out and we had to hold it wit our hands while playing through the game since we needed to use them to decode, It felt quite cumbersome since we had to use the same paper for multiple purposes. you really had to handle the parts with care as due to the various ways we had to use them, some parts were breaking apart. Other than the issues with the construction, the idea was super clever. We loved the transformation of the clue papers and how we were able to utilize them for different purposes. Photos above are properties of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅿🆄🆉🆉🅻🅴🆂 The puzzles were more intricate than the previous chapters. We did have to use hints for some parts. It would help to have photos in the hint section for this chapter since at times we're unsure if we had the items assembled correctly or not. Some solutions were not matching up to what we've had after the construction was completed and we couldn't tell what we did wrong even with the hints. Our favorite puzzle in this chapter was a visualization puzzle. I was amazed at what was happening once all the components were placed in the right positions. It also seamlessly tied in with the storyline. 🅲🅻🅾🆂🅸🅽🅶 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 This chapter's concept having us "assemble" the storyline was amazing. The way the creator was able to design puzzles with so many of these reversible puzzle pieces was something we haven't seen before. If they were able to make the insertions on the assemble parts bit more sturdy and easier to join together, it would have made the game even more enjoyable. We have always been big fans of The Curious Correspondence Club's ingenuity. I can't wait to see what we'll be able to "create" in the next chapter! Millie, provided us with her father's journal. This should help us uncover the next artifact. 🆃🅷🅴 ❞🅻🅾🅾🅺🆂❞ Chapter V came packaged in the same style as the previous games. You'll receive the backstory inside the envelope so open with care. Inside the envelope, you'll discover a torn journal page, a field journal, a field guide page, Millie's Note paper, 4 dig site photographs, a reversible ruin mat, 4 reversible stone tiles and a excavation trowel. Photos above provided by The Curious Correspondence Club 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 You'll need to be a good reader and instruction follower for this game. Most of the game play will depend on how well you can understand the journal. Mille's father has left instructions on what he has discovered inside the temple. You'll be following his footsteps to discover which spots are the right ones to dig and how to interpret the findings. The Curious Correspondence Club is great at creating innovative "gadgets" from paper. This time the cool little shovel and the scratch offs really gave us that "digging" sensation (although we still ended up using a coin as it didn't quite do the job but we still appreciated the idea). Photos above provided by ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅿🆄🆉🆉🅻🅴🆂 Since there are 4 sacred sections you'll need to explore in this temple, there will repetitive steps you will have to take to solve some of the puzzles. If you are confused on how to start, we strongly suggest looking at the hints. Once you're on the right path, come back and repeat the steps for the other sections of the puzzles. This was definitely a challenging chapter so don't be shy on taking hints. There were several steps you'll have to take before reaching a solution. Since the puzzles were linear, if you started with the wrong idea, you won't be able to continue with the journey. When we finally realized how everything worked together, we're impressed by the thought process behind the puzzle maker. Photos above provided by ESCAPETHEROOMers 🅲🅻🅾🆂🅸🅽🅶 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 The Curious Correspondence Club loves to let the players build their own playing grounds and this time was no exception. We constructed our own temple map, excavated the marked spots, and figured out the meanings behind the sacred shrine and symbols. These clues eventually led us to the artifact. The journey was definitely not an easy one but who said retrieving artifact was going to be an easy job? We finally have 5 in our hands now. Where could the 6th one be? I mean there's got to be a hidden passage somewhere right? It's time to begin our exploration... 🆃🅷🅴 ❞🅻🅾🅾🅺🆂❞ Normally we're not big fans of reading materials, but we absolutely love the writer behind The Curious Correspondence Club's narratives. They are very descriptive. As you read through the words, they will create images, sounds and sometimes even smell in your mind. So make sure not to skip the backstory that's printed inside the envelope. In this chapter, you'll receive 1 anonymous note, 5 reversible room tiles, 1 manor key, 1 reversible portrait, and 1 interactive bookcase. Photos above provided by The Curious Correspondence Club 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 Your better equip yourself with a magnifying glass and some good lighting for this game. We had a few "finding Waldo" moments but it definitely went along with the theme of "exploring" the manor. We really loved the graphics in this chapter. As you go through the 5 different rooms in the manor, you'll discover various embedded puzzles. The hidden elements really bought out the mysterious vibe of an old manor. The design of how to decode the passwords in this chapter was also quite clever. Certain aspects of the game made us feel like we were in an escape room. Photos above provided by ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅿🆄🆉🆉🅻🅴🆂 The puzzles in this chapter were a lot of fun. Maybe it's because we felt like we could relate them to ones we've seen in escape rooms. There were a lot of discoveries and associations to be made throughout each area of the manor. When we made the connection ourselves, we felt quite proud and patted ourselves on our backs. When we didn't and saw the hint on how the puzzle worked, we were still impressed by how the creator was able to come up with that puzzle. There were many "wow" and "duh" moments in this game. If you are good at searching, with a good amount of patience, you should have no issues with these puzzles. Photos above provided by ESCAPETHEROOMers 🅲🅻🅾🆂🅸🅽🅶 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 This was another enjoyable chapter from The Curious Correspondence Club. We love how the concept of their puzzles are always trying to create the physical setting of the space we're in. This time we were able to explore the manor, use a key, decipher hidden areas and eventually retrieve the artifact. My favorite moment in this game was when Brandon and I were racing to find an item with each other and bumped each other in the head. It was definitely an "ouch" yet funny moment at the same time. This is how dedicated we are as puzzlers! No head injury will stop our quest for the artifact! Bring on your 7th challenge now! It doesn't seem like we have much time left and we needed to get into their system... 🆃🅷🅴 ❞🅻🅾🅾🅺🆂❞ Read our previous reviews on more details about the packaging. In this chapter you'll receive a chapter envelope with the backstory on the inside, an identity card, a personal computer (printout), a reversible mouse (printout), a reversible pinboard, 9 push pins, a data print out and 5 firewall screens. Photos above provided by The Curious Correspondence Club 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 You might be overwhelmed by the amount of props that came with this game. But you'll quickly notice that there are various slits on different clue pieces. It might help to assemble some pieces together first. Definitely start off by reading the data printout. We found some valuable clues on there and was able to use those clues to thread the information together. As always, it's very important to be observant for The Curious Correspondence Club 's games. They are great with hiding details in their graphics. We definitely missed a few. We love the fact that they use a lot of tactile puzzles and can turn simple paper clues into 2D/3D props. In this chapter, we essentially build out a computer. The utilization of the mouse as how it would be in real life was very clever as well. Photos above property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅿🆄🆉🆉🅻🅴🆂 This was another challenging game from The Curious Correspondence Club . The puzzles were not too difficult once you recognize what they're looking for and could follow their thought process. The tough part was where to get started. One thing that did take us a long time to figure out was recognizing the hidden embedded codes. You really needed to have good eyesight for this game. It would've helped if the clues were bigger as they felt too crammed together for us to easily notice the embedded message. Once we knew what we're looking for, we had to use hints to bypass a few. We definitely recommend using the hint guide for this game to make sure you assemble everything correctly before going down a rabbit hole. The hint system was quite useful in this game as it doesn't just have the nudging hints but you'll also get photos of the finished assembly. Photos above property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🅲🅻🅾🆂🅸🅽🅶 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 Although we weren't able to complete all the puzzles on our own, it was still great to be able see the process. Not many puzzle companies we've seen could use their paper clues to tell a story so vividly. Perhaps I just really like tactile puzzles but it's a lot more engaging than words on a paper or searching on the internet. After reading the backstory, you're able to build out the scenes with the clues provided. This is why we're always very excited to see new chapters of The Curious Correspondence Club in our mailbox. Hopefully we'll be able to complete the final chapter without any clues and become a true Guardian! In this chapter you'll receive an envelope with the backstory (printed on the inside), a forest map, 6 polaroid photos, a pocket knife body, 6 pocket knife tools, a reversible compass, 2 compass needle, 2 ranger's axe, and a magazine cover. Photos above property of The Curious Correspondence Club 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 At first glance, you might be overwhelmed by the amount of items you've received for this game. Perhaps it's because this is our 8th chapter with CCC that we're finally catching their drift on their game design. It's important to look over everything before picking a point to start as there's always something that serves as a guidance and sometimes there's even a password manager. Like previous games, we had to assemble clue pieces together and many things could be utilized more than once. I love how the creator was able to use simple paper items and modify them into complicated real life tools. We had items like a compass, an axe and even a pocket knife! The graphics were very detailed but also easy to read in comparison to some of their previous games. This made it easier for us to associate the clues that we've discovered with the puzzle elements. As always if you get stuck, there's a comprehensive nudging hint system on their website. Photos above property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅿🆄🆉🆉🅻🅴🆂 We really enjoyed the puzzles in this game. I think it's the first CCC game that we were able to finish without looking at hints! The puzzles were non-linear so we split up right from the beginning. We were once again amazed by the creator's ability to design the puzzles into the narrative and be able to make the simple paper clues come to live. One minute we're wondering how and where we would use the axe, the next we're wowed by their imagination. The difficulty level felt just right for us as the game gave clear cluing that led us to the right path. Photos above property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🅲🅻🅾🆂🅸🅽🅶 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 I felt like a warrior after this game! Most of the time, CCC puzzles are quite difficult. Without using a hint to complete this game was a big victory in our books. I would love to see more of this type of difficulty from CCC. I think majority of the players would find puzzles that they don't have to rely on hints to be more enjoyable. This one was another job well done! To your surprise, a familiar face appeared in front of you, It's Millie Milton. As you just started to inquire about her whereabouts, an urgent voice came through the train radio. It seems like there's an issue with the engine and there's no way to remove the artifact until the train becomes stabilize. Can you make across the 5 train cars? Hopefully Millie will be able to guide you through this difficult task. 🆃🅷🅴 ❞🅻🅾🅾🅺🆂❞ Read our previous reviews on more details about the packaging. In this chapter you'll receive an envelope with the backstory (printed on the inside), 5 logo cards, 1 handheld radio, 7 reversible train carriage tiles, 3 reversible radio cards, 4 reversible fuses, 1 lumber tag and 1 valve wheel. Photos above provided by The Curious Correspondence Club 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 Normally with " The Curious Correspondence Club" games you'll need to discover the starting point on your own or you can freely choose where to start from. This chapter felt more organized and you actually have a device that will guide you through the steps of the game play. It's definitely necessary as this is another difficult chapter in terms of the puzzles in our opinion. The "CCC" surprised me again on the creative side with the design of this device. It's used both as a guide and a hint giver. If you successfully solve the first 5 puzzles, you'll be facing the final meta puzzle. Don't be shy on using hints from their website as it was great for us to understand what type of answer they are looking for and where to find the correlation. Once we knew that part, it was much easier to solve the remaining puzzles. Photos above are Properties of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅿🆄🆉🆉🅻🅴🆂 Most of the puzzles required multiple steps to get to the solution. Since they are not linear, you can complete them in any order. If you didn't want to use hints, I would suggest picking on an easier puzzle (you'll know which one it is) to find out what type of answer they're looking for. From there you can attempt a harder one and so forth. There's not much "search and find" type of puzzle in this game. We encountered some Math, deduction, decoding, and word puzzles. Make sure you have a lengthy table for the last puzzle. In my opinion, the meta puzzle actually felt like the easiest one out of all the puzzles but it was the most fun to solve since there was some assembling that was involved. Photos above are Properties of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🅲🅻🅾🆂🅸🅽🅶 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 I feel like I'm just repeating myself at this point but we are big fans of "CCC". I've read mixed reviews on other player's opinion on what they liked about the games and what they didn't and I feel like a lot probably has to do with the difficulty level of the puzzles. It's not really meant for beginner puzzlers and you really need patience with some of the games. I do feel some big changes with the game flow of this game. Although the puzzles are still challenging, there's a much clearer sense of direction for the players to take. What hasn't changed throughout the chapters is the ingenuity of their game design. Every chapter is filled with surprises from simple paper props. You never know what they would transform into. Many times, they are able to create an object or item that you would use in real life. I'm very excited about Chapter 10 as we're about to face something we've long been waiting for... Getting in won't be easy but good thing you have help. Besides Millie, you were greeted by two other guardians at the entrance. Will you succeed at infiltrating floor 64? 🆃🅷🅴 ❞🅻🅾🅾🅺🆂❞ This envelope felt quite thick comparing to the previous ones we've gotten and that is because there's a good amount of content inside: 5 fingerprint strips, 1 fingerprint scanner, 5 camera feeds, 1 reversible floor plan, 2 chamber walls, 2 report appendices, 1 defector's note and 4 smoke strips. Photos above are properties of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 Once you see the content of this game, you'll know right away that there's going to be some "construction" action. I'm always quite excited about the assembly part of the game as that's a special trademark for all of The Curious Correspondence Club games . Most of the game play will revolve around the 64th floor's floor plan. In this game, the creator is making the players think about how the story will develop. If you've made it to a floor that's full of security cameras, what would you do next? Perhaps find a route that has defective cameras? Then what? Think about your end goal. We really enjoyed this type of cluing as it's not really through words but through a narrative that you're creating through game play. Photos above are properties of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅿🆄🆉🆉🅻🅴🆂 There's essentially two parts to this game: getting to the designated location on floor 64 and then getting out safely with the artifacts. To us, the puzzles in the first part felt easier as pattern recognition and looking for clues embedded in images felt like puzzles we've seen in escape rooms before. The second part challenged us to construct the puzzle first and then solve them by using a special tool. The game did not come with the tool but it should be a fairly common household item (for experienced puzzlers, you'll definitely have this in some other games you've played before). It would be helpful if the creator could add an image of the constructed image as it was quite difficult to visualize it through the text clues on if we've assemble it correctly or not. Photos above are properties of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🅲🅻🅾🆂🅸🅽🅶 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 The chapter made us feel like James Bond. Hiding from security cameras, breaking fingerprint scanners, and avoiding laser beams were like things you'll see in a action film. Normally Brandon is not really a fan of deduction puzzles but the creator did a great job with the one in the game as it incorporated visual clues rather than text. It was a lot interesting to follow this way. This chapter also felt bitter sweet since one hand we really want to find out about the big finale but on the other, we really don't want it to end. Good news is that they already announced that season two is on its way! Photos above are properties of The Curious Correspondence Club 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 After 10 chapters of The Curious Correspondence Club, you would think we're experts by now but every game is like learning a new game for us. The way they want the players to put together the "scene" for them is always out of our expectations. This one was no different. Right away we saw the various symbols and patterns on the manhole. It really felt like a secret society had left their markings and the only way in is to figure out the password. The next part is when we usually sit for almost thirty minutes trying to figure out how to start the game. Definitely pay attention to the backstory as it'll give you some subtle hints. For this game, we had to use a hint to start. Once we saw the hint, the first thing we said to each other was: "Ok, that's clever." Therefore, please use hints for this game as it'll keep your momentum going and make it more fun than getting frustrated by sitting there for hours. Photos above are properties of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅿🆄🆉🆉🅻🅴🆂 Once we had the nudge, figuring out the first solution was quite easy. The next puzzle took us the longest as visually it was definitely a challenge. But the entire design made perfect sense as I would imaging it's quite easy to get lost in a tunnel. In this game, there's a good amount of observation puzzles. You might think that this section was quite easy but it's just a breather that will lead to the multi-step puzzle for the ending. Once again, the use of that prop was perfectly timed with the storyline but it will definitely challenge your math skills. Photos above are properties of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🅲🅻🅾🆂🅸🅽🅶 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 From day one, The Curious Correspondence Club captured our hearts with their stunning artwork and intriguing storyline. Although we're still struggling with the difficulty of their puzzles, we're always excited to see their envelope in our mailbox. I would have never imaged how they would be able to use the props such as the levers and gears and build an entire storyline around a sewer. The cliffhangers are really good too. But good thing we don't have to wait too long for Chapter 11. Also, this time we actually know where we'll be going: The Starfall Tower! Photo above is property of The Curious Correspondence Club Company: The Curious Correspondence Club Game: Chapter XII: Project Nexus Country: Canada 🇨🇦 Language: English Type of Game: Puzzles By Mail 📬 Genre: Mystery Date Played: November 5, 2021 Difficulty (based on 2 players): 9/10 Size of Team: Unlimited (Age 12+) Time: Unlimited (Suggested: 60-90 Minutes) Price : $21.95 (free shipping in North America); Monthly Subscription: $19.95/Yearly Subscription: $179 🆃🅷🅴 🆂🆃🅾🆁🆈 We are finally here. We've gathered all 12 shards. What can stop us now? What is this Project Nexus? Only one way to find out... 🆃🅷🅴 ❞🅻🅾🅾🅺🆂❞ Read our previous reviews to find out more on the packaging. In this chapter you'll receive a chapter envelope with the backstory on the inside, 1 artificial shard, 6 Nexus components, 4 glove components, 6 tablet screens, 1 holo projection and 1 tablet computer. Photos above are properties of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 Ok, I have to admit. I took a few deep breaths before starting the game. I knew CCC was not going to make this last chapter easy. Reading from the storyline gave us a bit more guidance in terms of what we needed to build from the paper materials and how they should be utilized. Since origami was my high school hobby, the assembly part was not so difficult. I loved how CCC was able to bring this artifact to live. It's just as I imaged but a lot prettier. The blue on black print for the tablet screens made the small fonts really hard to read. I wish that could have been done in another color choice. There's a few things that had to happen simultaneously in this game. You will need to understand how to operate the actual artifact, the glove, the holo projector for most of the puzzle interpretations. I strongly advise the usage of hints if you get stuck. There's a good amount of steps you'll need to repeat for some puzzles so you'll definitely get a chance to try some on your own. Photos above are properties of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅿🆄🆉🆉🅻🅴🆂 We almost have to use hints and solution check on most of the CCC games we've played. If you look back on our reviews, we've gotten frustrated at the beginning but only to learn that this is not the fun way to enjoy these games. We actually felt like we've improved on our puzzle solving skills while studying the hints and solutions. It's insane how the creators thought of how some of these puzzles worked together while using these paper components. I know there's mix feelings out there about the difficulty level of these games but we're definitely fans. It's hard but it all makes sense when you read through the solution. I do admit sometimes these puzzles make me feel like I have to play more games in order to "level up". This game in particular was a toughie. I was able to get through half but once the holo projector came into play, it definitely got a lot more complicated. The sequence and steps to get to each solution was also lengthened for this game. You'll need to rotate, adjust, readjust in order to finally get to one solution. This might have to be repeated several times. Just be patient since this is the finish line! Photos above are properties of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🅲🅻🅾🆂🅸🅽🅶 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 We finally concluded our journey with CCC with this final chapter. This fun adventure was definitely something we looked forward to every month in our mailbox. The story was engaging especially with the cinematic ending that gave me chills as the voice actor read through the final lines. I hope this is not the end...Because how many games have you played before that allowed you to assemble an Iron Man type of glove yourself and look so cool while solving puzzles? - Mysterious Package Company: The Curious Correspondence Club - "Chapter XIII: Chamber of Trials"
Photo above is property of The Curious Correspondence Club Company: The Curious Correspondence Club Game: Chapter XIII: Chamber of Trials Country: Canada 🇨🇦 Language: English Type of Game: Tabletop Games 📬 Genre: Mystery Date Played: January 22, 2022 Difficulty (based on 2 players): 7/10 Size of Team: Unlimited (Age 12+) Time: Unlimited (Suggested: 60-90 Minutes) Price : $21.95 (free shipping in North America); Monthly Subscription: $19.95/Yearly Subscription: $179 🆃🅷🅴 🆂🆃🅾🆁🆈 You are following in the footsteps of an intrepid adventurer, Liarea. She had previously explored a temple containing five idols and a large altar before becoming trapped and meeting her untimely end. Fortunately, she documented her progress and her journal is your guide. You must retrace her steps to discover what she missed. She had recovered five idols - each resting in a different room, protected by a different trap - rolling spiked log, snake pit, etc. This is a true Indiana Jones-style adventure, and you will need courage and creativity to overcome the five obstacles and discover how to escape. Only with this knowledge can you discern the proper path to escape the temple after order has been restored. 🆃🅷🅴 ❞🅻🅾🅾🅺🆂❞ This game has an impressive amount of collateral in the form of printed layouts - at least one for each trial and several for the final altar as well. Many of them are also double-sided, providing more puzzling material for the amount of items! They share a common look and feel, which contributes to the feeling of being immersed in the temple itself, especially when they are covering your kitchen table! There is also some construction to be done and we enjoyed the exploration and experimentation required to build the components themselves. We had to do some refining after our initial attempts at assembly; when they were properly assembled, it was clear we had done so correctly. Once everything is assembled and laid out, it's hard to believe it all came from a single envelope! The journal is written in small, cursive font on weathered pages, giving it an authentic look but also making it a bit hard to read. Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 It's purely linear - solve each puzzle to determine how Liarea obtained the idol from that chamber. In the course of solving each puzzle, you also discover a set of three runes that will be necessary in the final meta puzzle. So, it's important to note which runes came from which room and keep them associated with the proper idol. The runes are used to determine the proper path to follow around the final altar. We enjoyed coming up with silly names for the runes (bear backpack, three-dot octopus) as we worked together. Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅿🆄🆉🆉🅻🅴🆂 They are primarily spatial and logic-based. Each one involved some level of manipulation of the collateral provided. There was one straight-up assembly puzzle (fit the shapes into this area), but most of them involved first determining the proper mechanic, and then repeating it a number of times. There was some uncertainty regarding exactly how to apply the mechanic in some of the puzzles, leading to a lack of confidence in the answer generated. We struggled with these puzzles, for a couple of reasons. First, there is no way to verify that you are solving any puzzle correctly along the way (and no real A-ha moments). So, it's possible to get answers for all five, reach the end, follow the path, fail, but not have any idea where you went awry or which puzzle(s) were solved incorrectly. Secondly, the hint system is underdeveloped; the first hint for each puzzle was virtually identical and the second didn't provide much direction. (Although, we did find patterns after the fact that would've made for helpful clues.) We also experienced some confusion as to whether the journal was written from an omnipotent/overhead point of view or that of Liarea, which made it more difficult to understand the rules of engagement. Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🅲🅻🅾🆂🅸🅽🅶 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 We loved the look and concept of this envelope and its contents. Idols and ancient temples are wonderful source material for challenges like this, and it’s amazing how much material they packed in! We did have some frustrations with actual execution of the puzzles, and we often carried with us the uncertainty of whether we had solved them correctly. Curious Correspondence Club has done many wonderful things for the puzzling world. (If you missed Puzzletember, go back and check out @curiouscorrespondence on Instagram!) We also adore their tree-planting initiative! Despite the well-developed look and feel, this particular chapter missed the mark for us in terms of providing a satisfying puzzling challenge sprinkled with the moments of triumph that we crave when attempting to escape ancient temples. As each chapter tells one part of a continuing story, subscribers or fans of CCC may still enjoy having this one in their collection and we look forward to a new chapter to explore in the future! Making your way onboard and into the captain’s quarters, you find the remnants of many instruments that make up a rudimentary laboratory. You also encounter an old safe that hides what you are looking for but as you try to open the safe, the ship begins to shift in the ice. Can you obtain the contents of the safe before the ship is lost to the icy sea forever? 🆃🅷🅴 ❞🅻🅾🅾🅺🆂❞ Unfolding the envelope, the story of this chapter is printed on the envelope. The envelope also has a checklist of the items you should have as well as a QR code to the hint and solutions page. Laid out in the envelope are multiple high-quality looking papers and paper items. Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 Going through the different papers, our jaws dropped when we found ourselves building a tangible object with some of the papers given to us which ended up looking really impressive. Not only was the overall story from the envelope well written and detailed but we found the story embedded in the puzzles and other items written with great quality as well. The look and feel of the paper was high quality that ranged from weathered paper and old looking sketches. The hint section offered a leveled hint system. We found the hint system could have been labelled better since we had trouble with the descriptions they gave them. We had to click through each of the hint titles before we found the one we needed. Once the game is completed, the ending did have a great quality video that progressed the story and got us excited for the next Curious Correspondence game. Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅿🆄🆉🆉🅻🅴🆂 The puzzles were set up in a non-linear fashion so we were able to divide and conquer a little bit. At first glance, some of the puzzles were not very clear but once you read into the associated text, we got our aha moment and discovered how to solve them. One thing we liked was that the main pieces of each puzzle was marked out so that there was no confusion in wondering what pieces you need to solve them. There was a good mix of difficulty on the puzzles. Some we were able to solve and get right away while some we had to go over it a few times before realizing what needed to be done. There were some sneaky ones too that were fun to solve as they were not what they seemed. One thing we did find lacking was a confirmation through the game that you have the correct answer as you progress. There is a confirmation on the website for the final answer which will then reveal the final video but if you check your final answer and it is wrong, you may need to go through all the work you did through the other puzzles to see where a mistake could have been made. That being said, the solutions can be found on the hint pages if required. 🅲🅻🅾🆂🅸🅽🅶 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 Overall, we were very impressed with the amount of puzzling and story that could fit into one regular sized envelope. The fact that we could even build a tangible item from this game got us excited right from the start. Even though there was only 2 of us playing, the non-linear puzzle stream was nice to allow us to split things up and puzzle through, which would allow for a few more players if needed. The immersiveness that they were able to provide through the story telling really stuck with us as this was our first Curious Correspondence game. Even not having played any of their previous game, we did not feel lost or lacking any information to play. We are definitely going to have to try out some more. As you approach the bank, you notice that a robbery has taken place. Ushered in by the manager, Oskar Bernasconi III, he debriefs you on the situation. It seems that Starfall has come looking for a particular item in the safety deposit boxes. The problem is, that no one, not even Oskar himself knows which safety deposit box that item is kept in. The only way to find the correct box is by solving and combining the clues of six different safety deposit boxes, all of which have been ransacked by Starfall. Can you unravel the puzzles of the six boxes, find the crucial one and determine if the item has fallen into the wrong hands? 🆃🅷🅴 ❞🅻🅾🅾🅺🆂❞ Opening the envelope, the inside has a beautiful illustration and design to help set the mood of the game. As you start to set up the game, the envelope also contains the story. After reading that, you can begin to check out the rest of the contents which contains safety deposit boxes, a steel bullion cart, a locket and other well-designed paper items. Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 After reading the in-depth story from inside the envelope, there is a decisive nudge at the end to tell you where to start. The story is impressive in how detailed and well written it is to engulf you into the game. Going through the papers and items, I am always impressed with what CCC is able to replicate with just paper. Using papers that fit into an envelope, I was able to feel like I was rifling through 6 safety deposit boxes as well as working with a diamond and a locket. In this game, I felt there was some good cryptic directions on how to proceed and navigate the items and puzzles. Make sure to take your time to go through everything thoroughly. I also recommend having enough space to spread everything out. It would be easier to see everything and help make certain connections. Once you finish the game, the quality of the end video is a pleasure to watch which is a still shot narration. This game also has some subtle confirmation of the answers along the way which was nice to see. Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅿🆄🆉🆉🅻🅴🆂 There was a large swing in difficulty in the puzzles as there were some that I was able to solve right away to some that after a significant amount of time spent, I had to refer to the hints. Make sure to read everything and go over it carefully. There were a couple of puzzles where I missed what it needed me to do. The puzzles played out in a non-linear order which let me bounce around and take some breaks on some of the more difficult ones. CCC has a good hint system set up in case you do get stuck. I did have to use it a few times and it was well organized. One thing was that there were a few hints and solutions that did require some in-depth explanation and I had to reread it over a few times to understand what was required. Those ones could have used some pictures or diagrams to help guide you. Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🅲🅻🅾🆂🅸🅽🅶 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 " Safekeeping " felt like a pleasant twist to a bank heist escape room. Even though everything was made out of paper, I felt like a detective trying to discover the mystery of many boxes. Since this is a non-linear game, this would be a good game for up to 4 or 5 people since everyone can be checking different things out together. Depending on your solving skills, there are some puzzles that are quick to get but some that you may have trouble interpreting what to do. Do not be afraid to check out the hints when you need them to ensure that you have a great puzzling time with this game. Sadly, he passed away but we were greeted by his granddaughter Louise. You wouldn't be able to tell from the outside, but this cottage even has a museum inside! 🆃🅷🅴 ❞🅻🅾🅾🅺🆂❞ In this envelope, you'll receive your backstory printed on the envelope with contents (see above for the list) on the left flap and hint QR code on the right. Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 If you read our previous reviews on the games by CCC before, they haven't changed much in terms of the play style. But, they have definitely improved on clarity and game flow throughout the years. In this game, it would be beneficial to read the "last testament" first as it serves as a check list for things you'll need to complete in the game. From there, you'll need to pair together which information is relevant to which task. Of course there might be details printed on different pages. Remember they are double-sided, so make sure to search carefully! As always if you are stuck, there's always nudging hints you can check on their website. We still hope that the hint page could be improved for this game. It would be helpful to see some completed pictures as examples of solutions as some gadgets in this game are really cool to assemble. Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅿🆄🆉🆉🅻🅴🆂 CCC never makes their games too easy for the players and we usually block off a few hours when we start a new one. In this game, we were surprised as a few puzzles were not as difficult where as others definitely took multiple steps to complete. I really enjoyed the variations. I'm also an animal lover, so the different types of specimen and how we're able to maneuver them made the puzzles come to "life" as well! Every time we're able to complete a CCC puzzle without the hints, it's an accomplishment for sure. But we love the challenge! Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🅲🅻🅾🆂🅸🅽🅶 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 The creative minds at CCC is insane and has surprised us every single time that we received an envelope. I'm always wondering, what else can they do this month? I feel like they've done every scenario already? It was as if we're changing careers every time and of course this time we got to be an entomologist. There are less things that we're able to build this time, but the props that they've come up with were still very unique and complimented the storyline really well. At one point, the butterfly felt 3D on our table and I almost thought it was real! If you haven't done a chapter yet, definitely give it a go! Can you look through the artwork, learn about Dupont himself and find the message that he has hidden away in his final works? 🆃🅷🅴 ❞🅻🅾🅾🅺🆂❞ Unfolding the envelope that this game comes in, you are greeted with Curious Correspondence Club’s standard set up where the story is written on the envelope with a checklist of what should be included on the right and the QR code on the left for the hint page. In this particular game, the key items are (5) pieces of artwork, a gallery brochure, a paintbrush, artist palette and a pigment shelf. Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 As usual, the story writing for Curious Correspondence Club was top tier. The narrative always feels like it was taken out of a novel. This game specifically though, did have a lot more reading in it than the other CCC games we have played and we found it easy to read and truly believable. The information and pamphlet about the artist felt very realistic and did make us contemplate looking them up to see if they were real or not. With this theme especially, the story and puzzles made sense and worked together quite well. Much like all the other CCC games, we're always impressed with everything that they can fit into the envelope. The flow of the game revolves around non-linear puzzles that will lead you to a meta-puzzle. This allows you to tackle each of them as you please or can be played with a larger group of friends. The hint page was useful for our play. There are 2 layered hints that will slowly give you more before the solution, which gives you a full explanation on how to solve the puzzle. Some include a picture which helps a lot as well. Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅿🆄🆉🆉🅻🅴🆂 There is a nice range of puzzles in "Chapter XVII: Protege" , difficulty and diversity-wise. Reading into the flavor text, some we were able to understand and solve right away, some we had to ponder what needed to be done and a few we knew what the end goal was but then needed to complete them. All the paper items were also fun to play with. One issue we had in this game, each puzzle would reveal a set of numbers but unfortunately, there is no way to self-confirm the answer if they are correct a not. A couple of puzzles were also a little ambiguous on how to extract the numbers once you solved the puzzle and could be misinterpreted. This was where we leaned into the hints and solutions. When we think we got the answer, we would use the solutions to confirm if it was correct. Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🅲🅻🅾🆂🅸🅽🅶 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 "Chapter XVII: Protégé" gives you a history and art lesson (though not a real one) through the amazing writing of the story and background of Sylvester Dupont. Throughout the game, I was completely convinced that he was a real person which made for an even more immersive experience. The flow of puzzles also made for a nice game where you could divide and conquer with a larger group of friends. CCC provides a video at the end too which gives a satisfying conclusion to the game. We find CCC continues to provide solid games and have enjoyed all the ones we have played so far.
