Video above is property of Escapology Escape Rooms (Holmdel) 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE One thing that we have to commend Escapology on is their customer service, cleanliness, and décor. The friendliness and hospitality is always top-notch at all the locations we've been to so far (Garwood, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, and Las Vegas-Town Square), Escapology is known for their iconic steampunk-vibe from the lobby throughout the venue and it always transports us to another time as soon as we step foot inside. The props you see in this room are actual plane parts from an old Air Force One. How cool is that? "Mayday" started off inside the First Class cabin on board Air Force One. Not only were we immersed, we were comfortably seated in our recliners with our footrests up ready for takeoff! There were a total of 6 seats w/ overhead compartments for each. The set design was impeccable as it reminded us of the days we traveled (pre-Covid). The only thing missing was our pre-departure drinks! The storyline for this game was intense and definitely had a sense of urgency! Especially with the added sound effects. The puzzles were coordinated closely with a flight experience. You were able to experience things you would do as a passenger, flight attendant and the pilot! 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Being that "Mayday" is a fairly newer game that opened to the public this year, there were some minor things that we felt could've been updated. Some of the objects needed to replaced and retouched upon as one of the missing elements did hinder our thought process with regards to a puzzle. The game flow for "Mayday" was a little bit off. There were parts of the games that we bypassed which only made it more confusing. We also didn't get to experienced the full motion effect of the plane because of that. There was a puzzle where we had to be thinking like a pilot in order to get to where we needed to go. That's definitely a reach for most players. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? If you are looking for an action/ adventure game with a conspiracy storyline, you might have found your match. How often can you step foot inside an escape room and get a taste of what it's like onboard Air Force One? The puzzles were all uniquely crafted with an added "Whodunit" deductive reasoning objective. Video above is property of Escapology Escape Rooms (Holmdel) 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE For awhile now, I've been waiting for a "Hangover"/ "Memento" type game where the player can't remember what happened and has to work backwards to complete the objective. This is as close as I've seen it done and it was creatively orchestrated. The storyline was definitely unique and allowed the player to relate to the situation. Vegas Hangover's set design really captured the fun elements of being in a casino (with various games) and the "secrets" hidden within. When it comes to the puzzles, Escapology delivers the fun aspect of it. You definitely get to exercise that brain of yours with the obstacles in there. Without giving away too much, my favorite part was the way they created the "re-gaining your memories" puzzle. It was poetic and cleverly implemented. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Although the puzzles for "Vegas Hangover" were fun to solve and work through, there were a couple in there that I felt could've been more creative. There were a few props in there especially were designed to be "played" on as a gambler but we didn't really use it much for puzzle elements. One puzzle was quite confusing in the wording in terms of what the code could be as there were similar clues near by 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? If you are looking for a fun room with a unique storyline and surprise reveal at the end, this room is for you! This room involves some searching and attention to detail. Definitely recommend for a group of friends to play. A bachelor party would be quite fitting actually so the Best Man knows what "not" to do! 🔎 HINT You might not hear an alert, so sure to check if something new opened... They are a global franchise w/ 35 locations and 17 more on the way! We decided to try their newest room "Under Pressure" at their Garwood location. The design of the lobby is amazing and extremely spacious. You feel like you are walking into a high-end grand hotel lobby. Once you enter, you are greeted at the check-in desk. Free water is provided to you while you wait or after you finish your room. They also sell ice cream there. The great thing about Escapology is that all of their rooms are private bookings no matter how many people you have. Once we entered our room, we felt like we were submerged underwater inside of a submarine. There are sound alerts once you get closer to your time. There were definitely a few red herrings in there that we spent some time on. Although there were a number of puzzles, we felt that two people was definitely enough. Unfortunately, we got a bit confused towards the end on the final puzzle and was seconds away from completing our mission. We were extremely impressed with their design, that we booked another room back-to-back right there on the spot. Our experience in the first room - " Under Pressure " w as extremely enjoyable and we decided to book the "Budapest Express" room back-to-back. This is a classic "Whodunit?" room. If you like being Sherlock Holmes and you're great at the board game "Clue", this is the room for you. We would have gave this room a higher rating if it wasn't because there was something we were not told at the beginning and for us to go back and remember it, was nearly impossible. But it was important information we needed to know in order to solve the puzzle. This was quite frustrating for us as we went through the whole room very quickly and spent the last 30 minutes just dwelling on that. At the end, we did escape with just the two of us with 3 minutes to spare. Besides that, the room design was really cool. Right away you felt like a passenger on a moving train as the story unfolds. We hope the storyline or clue system could be implemented a little better since this room definitely deserves higher ratings. Read our review on the " Under Pressure " and " Budapest Express " rooms in order to find out more about this escape company. In terms of the decor of this room, we were a bit disappointed in comparison to the others. Although it did stick to the storyline the whole time, you can totally feel the difference between their newer rooms and the older ones. The flow of the game was still great as well as the communication w/ our game master. Remember, this location will provide you with more than 3 hints if needed. However, for each additional hint, they will add 3 minutes to your final escape time. Do use them wisely only if you have to. There was definitely a few clever ways they used the puzzle to reveal answers which we haven't seen before. The condition of the room, the excellent service, and the tidiness of the entire place (you can even smell a nice aroma right when you enter the lobby). These are the things that keeps us going back for more. On to the next one... "Antidote". This room felt a bit more immersive than the " The3 C0D3 ". They added a lot of sound effects to accommodate the laboratory feel which definitely created a sense of urgency to find the antidote and escape. What we liked about all the Escapology rooms is that all of their puzzles are very logical and flows really well with the storyline and they always stick to it until the end. The puzzles were quite basic in this room, so for we definitely recommend this room to beginners. We escaped this room with two people and time to spare. There was one mechanism in the room that even when we opened it, it didn't "reveal" itself. That was the only issue we encountered in this room. The game master was great once again and we had a wonderful time. We also had the privilege of meeting the owner at the end of this game and he was very friendly and an escape enthusiasts himself. So he has really good idea of what type of experience escapers are looking for and the level of quality and customer service to provide. This is why their rooms are so great. We are excited to go back in the future to try the two new rooms - " Mansion Murder " and " Saving Santa " that will be opening soon. The sun is setting fast. Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE Like most experiences at Escapology, this room’s decor and atmosphere were both excellent! The inside of the pirate ship is convincingly modeled, and the dynamic music track sets the tone well. The room’s tech worked smoothly and was integrated in a way that added an air of supernatural mystery without feeling out of place in the setting. Puzzle structure is generally very solid. The number of elements in play was always small enough that we weren’t overwhelmed while large enough that our team could work on multiple things at once. Puzzles make good use of space, maintaining a sense of progression as new areas and puzzle elements become available. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK One prominent red herring threw us off for a while, and we were a little disappointed to find out that it wasn’t important. Also, the room broke the unwritten “one clue, one lock” rule at one point. These aren’t necessarily flaws, but they contradicted what my team thought was conventional escape room wisdom. The coloration of a few elements had worn in a way that added some friction to solving one of the puzzles, which surprised us given how new the room is. Similarly, another puzzle had us examining the contents of several bottles that were very difficult to see inside as they were heavily coated with sand. While changes in the room were signaled by flickering lights and sound effects over the speaker, it was sometimes hard to tell what was different after an effect triggered. More distinct, location-specific cues would have been helpful. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? As a brand, Escapology has an established formula that serves it well across its collection of escape games. Each room features a strong theme expressed through decor and puzzle design and supported by the introductory video, dynamic music, and flavor text throughout the room. The experience always takes place across three rooms, each subtly developing the theme and generally ramping up the difficulty of the puzzles until the story culminates in one final puzzle that enables exit through the original entrance. “ A Pirate’s Curse ” follows this formula closely, and as a result it lacks much in the way of surprise to anyone who has completed Escapology’s other rooms. Nonetheless, this new room largely meets the bar set by the high level of detail and polish on display elsewhere in Escapology’s catalog, and remains a satisfying experience. Puzzle design is consistently strong with only a few small hiccups, and the decor and atmosphere help sell the sense of adventure evoked by the fantastical story. Given the quality of Escapology’s rooms, this one is definitely worth a look for any escape enthusiast, though I would advise keeping the team size down to six or fewer people. If you enjoy this room, check out Budapest Express for an experience on about the same difficulty level. For a greater challenge, consider " Mansion Murder " or " Under Pressure ". ℹ️   ADDITIONAL INFO Escapology Garwood is in a shopping center with free parking available just outside the building. The great thing about the self guided hint system is that you no longer have to wait for the game master to give you hints. Everything is automated. As we entered the room, we felt like we walked into an giant arcade room. There were lights, machines, and a cool crystal ball (which is the main focus and the brain of the room where puzzles gets distributed from). The lighting really helped to direct the players to the specific puzzles. Y ou can choose to work together or separately as the room is non-linear but some puzzles will require teamwork to complete. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK The décor didn't go with the storyline (didn't really have a restaurant vibe). Perhaps changing the story would be the easier choice. We were surprised by the answer reveal once again in this room which happens after a 3rd hint nudge. It would be nice if there's a prompt that would say "this next reveal will be the answer". It would help to have a writing device in the second room. There's a good amount of information that we had to produce from memory. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? The room always starts with 3 puzzles. Depending on time, you might see more bonus puzzles or you might not. With two people it was quite challenging to get into the bonus section as some physical puzzles needed a bit of luck and some balancing skills. The physical puzzles were not really able to be skipped. The logic ones could get easier if you started asking for hints. This room was definitely for a player who's more focused on puzzles rather than narrative. It also had more variety in puzzle types than "M.A.S.K". To us, this room was more challenging than M.A.S.K. The great thing about the self-guided hint system is that you no longer have to wait for the game master to give you hints. Everything is automated. This is a task-focused room and the puzzles are more on the unconventional side. They are focused more on wordplay, finding differences, logic/deduction, etc... It was refreshing to play something very different for once. The solutions were quirky and fun too. The game starts out with easier puzzles as a warm up and then progressively gets harder depending on how your team does for the rest of the hour. The story was told by pre-recorded character voices and as you complete the puzzles, new stories will develop. The room and puzzles changes with each player. So you could essentially have a totally different experience than someone else who just played the room. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK I'm not sure if it's because we requested two hints from the beginning or not, but the frequency of the computer asking if we wanted a hint was a little too much in this room. Too bad there wasn't a way to turn it off or adjust it after the initial recognition. I wish we would have gotten a warning from the game master that the actual answer will reveal if we requested a 3rd nudge. We thought the nudging system was fine but it was a let down when the answer was just given to us. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? Because you actually get an answer reveal (if you wanted it) for every puzzle, I assume that there's a 100% escape rate with this room. But the challenge is focused more on the bonus puzzles. You can complete the room with 1,000 points, but if you wanted more (you can achieve over 2,000-5,000 points), you'll have to solve extra puzzles and unlock more along the way. In a sense this game is replay-able if you want to check out the puzzles you haven't solved when you return next time. You can definitely feel the competitiveness in this game. The massive screens offering a glimpse of the ocean and its mysteries elevate the immersion to an entirely new level. The navigation and emergency scenarios we tackled during the game perfectly align with the game's theme. One puzzle, traditionally solved differently, was ingeniously redesigned into a unique challenge we haven't encountered before. Enthusiasts will definitely appreciate it, though beginners might find it challenging. The set design cleverly uses a ship prop to visualize scenes "outside" the ship. This was an innovative idea by the designer. The sound system, especially during danger alerts, effectively enhances the sense of urgency for the players. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK We were informed that there would be music and dramatic sound effects, but due to a glitch that day, we missed out on experiencing it. But you'll definitely enjoy it though, let us know all about it! There's a puzzle towards the beginning that could benefit from clearer operational directions. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? We were the very first group to experience the brand new game at Game Over Tampa West. As expected with any new room, there were a few technical and musical glitches to address, but overall, it was an fun experience. We truly felt the ocean's presence, especially in the control room with its three large screens. Prepare to be surprised by an unexpected twist later in the game that will startle you and intensify the urgency to escape. The creator did an excellent job instilling this pressure in the players. He has always had an interest in extra-terrestrial activity. Did something happen to him because of this? You decided to visit his apartment to investigate further. Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The focus of the first part of the room revolved around assembling something that could be of use in determining where Richie went. That was a neat transitional prop to open up the next chapter. The puzzle flow was quite nice. We didn't really feel stumbled at all and knew exactly which clue went with which lock. The designer wanted us to feel like detectives and find the subtle hints that Richie was leaving for us. It worked! 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Some answers felt too obvious. It might be better to make it a bit more difficult to guess to avoid players from brute-forcing the puzzle. A few props (especially ones involving clues) could use some updating. The second room's decor needed more relevance to the storyline. Although there was some information given about Richie throughout the game, we were unsure about a conclusive ending. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This game was designed by the Gamemasters at Escape Reality Glasgow. We were pleasantly surprised by the creativity that went into the set design and puzzles. The best thing is we didn't have to use the Ipad for clues at all! We were a bit upset when we found out a cool prop doesn't work anymore due to an incident with a previous player. It's unfortunate as it could have made a very cool ending for the room. We were fortunate to be able to peak into their next project and it definitely looks like it's on another level. We have high expectations for the future of Escape Reality as they definitely have a lot of hidden talents and I'm glad they are letting their imagination run wild! There are tales that terrible things happen to people who wander there at night. The local town has sent some search parties out to look for them. You and your group has stumbled upon a video camera near an old cabin while searching for them. Playing the video, you realize that the stories are true, and you must make it into the cabin by nightfall or suffer the same fate as the hikers. Hurry! Nightfall is only 45 minutes away. 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE Stepping into the foggy room, the atmosphere was phenomenal! The room felt like we were in the middle of the woods and what blew our mind was the simulation of nightfall that had the room getting darker as time progressed. The puzzles were creative and stayed with the theme. We were so impressed with how they used so many items we would find camping or at a cabin and turned them into puzzles. The quality of the intro video was top notch and definitely got us in the mood of the room. GTFO does a great job on keeping you motivated and letting you know how you are doing. The best way to describe it is there is “achievement music” that plays whenever you hit a milestone in the game. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Nothing major jumps out at us that could have been improved. This was a solid room. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This room was spooky but not scary. The room would be fine for people who are not a fan of scary and no, there are no jump scares. This room has a complete Blair Witch Project vibe for anyone who is a fan of the movies. The puzzle flow went from linear to non-linear at times which is nice to keep everyone busy throughout the game. We completed it with 2 people but believe that 6 people could play together and have a great time. Having played a few of GTFO games, one highlight is always the victory photo at the end, which is taken with a polaroid, where you get to keep one for yourself and display one at their location. Make sure to eat your carrots before coming because you will need your eyes at its sharpest as nightfall approaches. The location of his infamous lair has been located but it is up to you to find a way in and save Sindur. 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE This was an all tech room and it was fantastic. No magical room would be complete without the use of wands, which we needed to navigate a bulk of the puzzles. There was a nice variety of puzzle types in the room. The puzzles were big enough that we were not all cramped around a single item. We also found that the puzzles helped everyone participate as they were much easier with more people helping out. This was a great high-quality room that was completely immersive. The effects we encountered along the way made the experience that much better. The starting intro video and the outro video really had the room start on a high note and finish with a high note. Just a fun note that we appreciated was that during the introduction video, nothing in the room was activated and the room was dark. This forces people who normally begin searching the room immediately to watch the intro video. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Some of the puzzles had buttons that were lit up and you needed to select the correct buttons. We found the buttons to be so bright that at times, we had to cover them up to be able to see the puzzle. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? We love that the victory photo is taken with a polaroid camera. You get one to take home and one to stick somewhere in the lobby area. For any fans of Harry Potter, this is a must do room. We felt like Aurors heading into the dungeon. The linear room was high quality with a nice mix of puzzles that required the effort of everyone to make it through. For experienced players, this would be a challenge to play but also would be fun for any beginners as well. We played with 4 people but we can see 2 experienced players or 6 beginners and everything in between having a great time here. Are you willing to join forces for what could potentially become the most significant heist the town has ever witnessed? 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE GTFO’s adept use of audio and light cues helped us progress through the story, enhancing the immersion as we travelled from room to room as well as guiding our attention to key points through the game. The final room provided a satisfying experience with the rewarding puzzle sets we needed to complete. The props stood out for their top-notch quality and integration into the game as well as the set design of the rooms looked exactly as they were supposed to. The puzzles had clear signposting and creatively done with some unique twists on familiar concepts. Every item in the room had a purpose which minimized any distractions on elements that you did not need to look at. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Though the rooms did have minimal items to keep us from getting distracted, the rooms did seem slightly bare, taking away from some of the immersion. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? "The Heist" is one of GTFO’s original rooms from when it opened in 2015 but the game still holds up. The puzzles provided some great team victory moments that we all got to share in as well as they were set up in a fashion that allowed all of us to be working on something at the same time. The final room was set up in a climactic moment that had us end on a high note. We played with 4 players, which was a great number to keep us all busy and still see a lot of the room. Anyone who is a fan of bank heists or looking for a great introduction room for escape room beginners, this is one to play.
