- Secret Clue GmbH - "Roomanji"
LOCATION: Bülach, Switzerland Photo above is property of Secret Clue GmbH Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME : Roomanji 📅 DATE PLAYED : March 30, 2025 🎬 GENRE : Adventure 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 3 ppl) : 3/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS : 2-6 ppl 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME : 60 Mins. 💰 PRICE : CHF 100-192 ☎️ BOOKING TYPE : Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED? : Yes (25:32) 📖 THE STORY An ancient board game, Roomanji, has mysteriously resurfaced after years of being forgotten—and now, it’s in your hands. The moment you make your first move, distant drumming echoes around you, and in an instant, you’re pulled into the game. Trapped in a perilous adventure world, you have only one mission: save Roomanji. Solve the puzzles, navigate the dangers, and restore balance—because only then can you escape. Do you have what it takes to beat the game before it traps you forever? 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE Before entering Roomanji we had to pass a little test. Although in no way difficult, it was a cute touch that made us smile and was perhaps the most thematic things about the game. Roomanji is an immersive escape room that draws clear inspiration from Jumanji. The set design is visually impressive, with lush decorations, atmospheric lighting, and sound effects that transport players straight into the heart of the game’s world. The game consists of several rooms with each containing its own theme, such as jungle or Arabic market. The puzzles are well-integrated into the theme of each particular room; featuring a mix of logic challenges, hands-on tasks, and teamwork-based solutions that keep the experience engaging from start to finish. We particularly enjoyed how many elements required physical interaction, adding to the sense of adventure. The game flow is also almost entirely non-linear, meaning teams can split up if they want to ensure everyone remains active and engaged throughout. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK The biggest shortcoming of " Roomanji " is its lack of immersion and narrative cohesion. Each space felt isolated, with little connection to either the Jumanji theme or the other rooms. Unlike other Secret Clue games, such as Paranormal or Welcome to Hawkins, this one felt less detailed and cohesive, which slightly diminished the magic of the experience. The puzzle selection felt limited, both in terms of variety and sheer number. Additionally, most challenges had little connection to the Jumanji story, making the game’s atmosphere feel somewhat flat and less immersive. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? " Roomanji " is a solid entry-level escape room, and we’re glad we had the chance to experience it. The professionally built set is impressive, and some of the puzzles will be refreshingly new for many players. The nonlinear flow also makes it a good choice for teams of all sizes, ensuring everyone stays engaged. However, for more experienced teams, the game may fall short in terms of complexity, storytelling, and immersive theming. If you’re looking for a highly thematic, story-driven escape, this one might not fully deliver. ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Parking is not available on site. - Secret Clue GmbH - "Welcome to Hawkins"
LOCATION: Bülach, Switzerland Photo above is property of Secret Clue GmbH Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME : Welcome to Hawkins 📅 DATE PLAYED : March 30, 2025 🎬 GENRE : Adventure 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 3 ppl) : 4/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS : 2-6 ppl 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME : 60 Mins. 💰 PRICE : CHF 100-192 ☎️ BOOKING TYPE : Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED? : Yes (26:00) 📖 THE STORY The Hawkins National Research Laboratory is in crisis—strange occurrences, eerie shadows in the woods, and unexplained disappearances have thrown the small Indiana town into chaos. A sinister creature lurks, spreading fear and destruction. As you search for the truth behind the vanishing residents, you’re pulled into a parallel world—one where danger lurks at every turn and not everyone will make it out. Can you uncover the mystery and escape before it’s too late? 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The biggest highlight of this game is undoubtedly its attention to detail in set design, particularly the living room from Will’s house. As one of the most iconic locations from Stranger Things, a high-quality recreation was essential, and Welcome to Hawkins delivers. The space is filled with authentic props and decorations, complemented by audio and visual effects that heighten immersion for both fans and newcomers alike. The other two rooms maintain the same level of craftsmanship, staying true to the theme and ensuring the story aligns closely with Stranger Things. Thoughtful special effects and a spacious layout allow larger teams to move comfortably, fully experiencing what the game has to offer. The puzzles are well-designed and seamlessly integrated into the theme and storyline. Each action feels purposeful and makes use of iconic props from the show, creating a sense of nostalgia. The high level of interactivity, teamwork, and communication made for a truly engaging experience. The game unfolds in two distinct halves. The first half is nonlinear, offering multiple puzzles that teams can tackle together or separately—we split up for most of them, which likely contributed to our quick escape time. The second half transitions into a more linear structure, but continues to emphasize team-based challenges, ensuring everyone stays involved until the very end. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Overall, this is a solid and well-executed game, with very little to critique. If anything, the middle section felt slightly underwhelming. The space in this part of the game felt larger than necessary, and the momentum dipped slightly. Adding extra puzzles or a more dynamic escape route could enhance this section, keeping the excitement levels high throughout. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? Absolutely! This was our favorite room at Secret Clue, despite being one of the easiest. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a first-time player, Welcome to Hawkins is well worth experiencing for its stunning aesthetics, immersive atmosphere, and engaging gameplay. ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Parking is not available on site. - Sherlocked Mystery Experiences - "The Architect"
LOCATION: Amsterdam, Netherlands Photo above is property of Sherlocked Mystery Experiences Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME : The Architect 📅 DATE PLAYED : January 24, 2025 🎬 GENRE : Mystery 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 4 ppl) : 7/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS : 2-6 ppl 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME : 60 Mins. 💰 PRICE : €29/ pp ☎️ BOOKING TYPE : Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED? : Yes 📖 THE STORY Your group finds yourselves in the heart of Amsterdam, drawn to an intriguing little study—one that seems to belong to a famed Dutch architect. What secrets might be hidden within these walls? Curiosity takes over as you step inside, ready to uncover the mysteries left behind. What starts as a simple investigation quickly transforms into a journey through time, unraveling secrets buried deep within the foundations of history. The discoveries that await are yours to uncover, but be prepared—nothing is quite as it seems.. 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE For an introductory escape room, The Architect delivers a solid and engaging experience. The puzzles strike a great balance between accessibility and intrigue, keeping our group occupied and engaged throughout the entire adventure. One particular prop, cleverly built up during the game, led to a satisfying and memorable finale—one that not only wrapped up the experience in an exciting way but also hinted at the larger world of Sherlocked, leaving us eager to explore more of their creations. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK There is a portion in The Architect where the group is split, and while one side is given relatively straightforward puzzles, the other is faced with a truly challenging beast of a puzzle. This led to a noticeable time disparity, leaving part of the team feeling underutilized while waiting for the other side to push through. A bit more balance in difficulty or guidance could have helped maintain engagement across both groups. Additionally, one of the props in the game showed some wear and tear, and while it didn’t significantly impact the gameplay, a little extra care would have elevated the experience to match the otherwise high production value of the room. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? " The Architect " is a solid yet fairly standard escape room experience that blends a variety of puzzles with some interesting moments of discovery. The room is showing its age, which has both positive and negative effects on gameplay. On the one hand, the wear and tear give the space an authentic, lived-in feel that enhances immersion. On the other hand, some props feel well-used to the point of being in need of a refresh. While there’s nothing in The Architect that screams “must-play,” it serves as a great introduction to escape rooms, particularly for newcomers. If you plan to marathon Sherlocked’s games, this is the ideal starting point, offering a glimpse into the world they’ve created. The biggest hiccup is a section where the team is split up, and one side is stuck with a lengthy sound-based puzzle that demands a significant amount of time and effort. Overall, The Architect offers a well-rounded escape experience that works best as an introduction to Sherlocked’s world or for those new to escape rooms. While it doesn’t necessarily stand out as a must-play, it delivers a solid mix of puzzles and atmosphere. The experience remains engaging and provides a good foundation for players looking to explore more immersive escape adventures. ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Minor physicality needed (Ex. walking up and down stairs, squating, stretching) No Lobby but bathrooms on site Can be played in Dutch and English Located in the heart of Amsterdam. - Sherlocked Mystery Experiences - "The Vault"
LOCATION: Amsterdam, Netherlands Photo above is property of Sherlocked Mystery Experiences Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME : The Vault 📅 DATE PLAYED : January 24, 2025 🎬 GENRE : Heist 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 4 ppl) : 6/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS : 4-7 ppl 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME : 80 Mins. 💰 PRICE : €33/ pp ☎️ BOOKING TYPE : Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED? : Yes 📖 THE STORY It all starts with a message from your informant. A cryptic text. A meeting point in a shadowy parking garage. Your mission? Retrieve the package and descend into the deepest depths of Amsterdam to unlock the secrets hidden within a heavily fortified vault. Every step of the way, you must maintain your cover, blend into your surroundings, and navigate a web of high-tech security, cunning deception, and cleverly placed traps. The masterminds behind the vault have gone to great lengths to protect its contents, and only the most skilled operatives will have a chance at breaking in. Precision, teamwork, and quick thinking will be your greatest weapons as you infiltrate one of the most exhilarating and high-stakes heist experiences imaginable. 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The game wastes no time in setting the perfect tone. From the moment you step into the heart of Amsterdam, the experience feels cinematic, immersive, and full of intrigue. The journey to the art gallery is more than just a location change—it’s a seamless transition into the world of high-stakes heists, where every detail matters. One of the game’s strongest aspects is its gradual unraveling of your role in the story. Rather than simply being a team of thieves on a mission, you slowly uncover who your characters truly are and what personal motivations drive them. This careful storytelling adds weight to the choices you’ll face later, making them feel meaningful rather than just another game mechanic. By the time the pivotal moment arrives, you’ll be fully invested in the story and the consequences of your decisions. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK While the storyline and actions in this game were undeniably thrilling, we couldn’t shake the feeling that some of the plot points from the beginning didn’t fully tie into the finale as cohesively as we had hoped. It almost felt like two separate experiences, each engaging in its own right, but with a transition that wasn’t as seamless as the rest of the game. One of the most anticipated moments—the iconic vault laser maze—was a fantastic concept, but the execution fell just a bit short of delivering the full “Mission: Impossible” fantasy. The lasers were not entirely visible throughout the space, forcing our group to guess their positions rather than maneuver through them with precision. While this didn’t make the puzzle unsolvable, it did take away from the cinematic thrill of the moment, which could have been even more spectacular with a clearer visual element. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? " The Vault " is an escape experience that makes you feel like the star of a high-stakes heist movie. From the moment you step into the heart of Amsterdam, you're drawn into an undercover operation that blends deception, strategy, and action seamlessly. The setting itself is a standout feature—breaking into a nearly 100-year-old vault adds an extra layer of authenticity that few escape rooms can match. The game does a fantastic job of balancing cinematic storytelling with interactive gameplay, giving players the chance to step into their roles and uncover their characters' motivations. The puzzles are engaging, though some proved to be more challenging than exhilarating, occasionally slowing the momentum. The laser maze, a key highlight, had an exciting concept but lacked full visibility, making it harder to live out that perfect "Mission Impossible" moment. While the roleplay elements were well-executed, they left us wanting a bit more immersion through actor-driven interactions. That being said, The Vault is an excellent introduction to the world of cinematic escape rooms, especially for teams of four. It offers a thrilling mix of strategy, storytelling, and spectacle that makes for a truly memorable experience. Whether you're a seasoned escape room enthusiast or a newcomer looking for a high-energy adventure, this is one heist worth taking on. ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO One player must be able to receive texts from a Netherlands Phone number All players should expect to walk a bit and one player should be able to crawl short distances No lobby however bathrooms can be accessed. The hospitality of the game masters and the owner was outstanding. They treated guests with the utmost professionalism and kindness, guiding them through the game with ease. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK The storyline serves as an introduction to the game and sets the stage. The objective of finding the presentation notes takes players on a captivating puzzle-solving journey without many plot twists, but compensates with a series of well-designed and challenging puzzles. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? The escape room design for "The Observatory" is unique and unparalleled compared to other venues. The challenging puzzles and innovative set design offer a captivating experience for enthusiasts. Video above is property of Crypto Escape Rooms 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The set design was stunning and gorgeous, making us feel like we were transported into a fairy tale story with the stone walls of a castle full of vines, waiting to be found. Animatronic characters not only guided us through the experience but also advanced the story in an immersive way that made us feel like we were part of the story. This was an all-tech experience with puzzles that left us in awe for their creativity and blended into the environment and fit into the story. The puzzles also were designed to encourage teamwork and group effort. One tech puzzle that stood out had a nice hint mechanism in it that rather than tell us an answer, had the puzzle change slightly to nudge us in the right direction. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK This was an amazing experience with no major misses. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This was a fully immersive experience with its deep storytelling, breathtaking room design, and beautiful animatronics that we would expect at Disney. The narrative was engaging and we continued to see it unfold with cutscenes throughout. The puzzles blended into the environment and fit right along with the story. - E5C4PE - "Survival"
LOCATION: Kingston, Pennsylvania, USA Photo above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers ** UPDATE - We regret to inform you that "E5C4PE" has closed its doors. Public/Private : Public/ Private Discounts : Subscribe and email us for details We went to E5C4PE on a Sunday. They are located on the side of a main street with street parking on Wyoming Avenue and in the rear (make sure to only park in the spots marked “visitors”). Currently, they have three escape rooms plus a children’s escape room. We only have time to tackle one of them and of course we picked the most challenging one - “Survival”. The lobby was very spacious and they have a lot of space in the back as well. The theme of this room reminded me of the TV show “Lost”. Our plane crashed and we were lucky enough to survive but now we’re stuck on a deserted island. We discovered that there’s an actual ship that’s miles offshore, so our mission is to get to the ship and sail away and save ourselves. Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers Our first impression of the room when we entered was that it’s very colorful and the developers were definitely trying to go for the ocean feel. There were a few pieces of the puzzle that we didn’t think fit the storyline like a clock which would probably not be on a deserted island. It would be great if the props used could stick to the realistic situation which most of them did. The ambience from room-to-room could be improved to open a “new world” or tell a different story each time. Lighting and sound may be able to assist with improving that aspect. Since the structure of the building is what it is, we understand its quite difficult to cover up or make the rooms seamless to the game flow. It would be interesting to see what this room would become next with a new concept perhaps that can fit into the utilization of this actual space with a more logic theme. You should leave plenty of time for the last part of the game. The puzzles are not difficult but definitely time consuming. We were a minute away from solving the last puzzle. Our recommended size for this room is 4-6 as you can divide and conquer especially in the last room. There was not much high tech involved in this room but their pricing for the escape rooms are very generous in comparison to most of the escape rooms out there. We were able to take a peek at their other rooms and their newest room “The Holding Cell” looked like a nice step up from “Survival”. The developers are constantly improving and bettering their games for the customers and we are excited to see E5C4PE’s future developments! * Check out our YouTube video above for a sneak peek of the location, interview with the owner, the room and more! ** We don't want to go into detail and ruin any surprises for you, but you want more info like if the room is a multi-room or what other additional tips we can provide to you, feel free to email us. Our first experience at Escape Rooms Connecticut was so impressive that we knew that it was only a matter of time before we would return to try their other rooms. We met with the founder of the company the last time we visited, but this time we got an exclusive interview to learn more about their operations. They currently have three rooms to select from, but there's another one on the way and it's going to be horror themed. Once that fourth room is complete, Escape Rooms Connecticut will have almost every type of genre covered - Sci-fi, Action, Adventure, and Horror. Today, we are attempting to escape their sci-fi room - “Sector X". As soon as you enter the room, you forget how you got there! The room design is completely out of this world (literally)! You feel like you are on a spaceship and time is of the essence. The puzzles were linear and cleverly designed to correlate with the storyline. The special effects and the technology definitely enhanced our experience! We are now counting the days until that fourth room opens up to the public... Since being decommissioned, the equipment has collected dust, until now. You and your friends embark on a mission to navigate the depths of Station M and learn what secrets have been leaked to stop an upcoming catastrophe. 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE Though the rooms and play area aren’t that large, the immersive story, interaction with the actor and each other, and the fun props makes up for it, making the game feel grander than it is. The energy you feel from the enthusiasm of the group and actor interaction sweeps you away in the adventure of the game no matter if you are solving puzzles or simply exploring the space. The puzzles of the game vary from low tech to high tech, but each offer some nice surprises and eureka moments, while making them large enough to get more people to participate in them. The experience uses the historical setting well, blending in with the old architecture and integrating the pieces of the game. The in-game actor adds a nice touch that guides you through the experience and makes you truly feel like part of the story. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Depending on the type of player you are and the group you find yourself in, you may not get a lot to do or get to see everything happening as there will be plenty of people to work on the puzzles and some reveals could happen while you are in another area. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? " Station M " was an entertaining adventure set against the backdrop of Casa Loma’s underground tunnels. The historical setting made for an immersive experience, where it is easy to get swept away in the excitement of the game and be part of the story. The puzzles were hands on and each had plenty to do. As these games are public bookings and typically sold out you will find yourself playing with others if your group is less than 12. If you are a history buff, visiting Casa Loma or enjoy immersive experiences, then this is a game you should play. Join the convert operation and see if you can help make history. ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Paid parking ($15) You will need to climb a narrow staircase during the game and a few flights of stairs to get to the starting area. - Omventure Markham - "Motel Betty"
LOCATION : Markham, Ontario, Canada Photo above is property of Omventure Markham Photo above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME : Motel Betty 📅 DATE PLAYED : August 6, 2023 🎬 GENRE : Horror 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 3 ppl) : 8/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS : 4-9 ppl 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME : 120 Mins. 💰 PRICE : CAD $60/ pp ☎️ BOOKING TYPE : Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED? : No 📖 THE STORY It is one dark and stormy night for the ages. You and your friends are lost, driving in the impenetrable night of the countryside's winding roads. With equal parts avidity and anxiety you witness the torrential rain as it batters against the car windows, terrorizing your nerves, while the knell of a great thunderous crash resounding all around you signals a shocking flash of lightning that exposes the surrounding trees in their helpless state of petrification and abuse. The car has slowed to a safe but untenable pace of motion. Everyone is tired and on edge, the novelty of the situation having now descended into a mad desperation, as you search for a safe harbor. When in the distance a faint glow appears beckoning you towards it, entrancing your hopes like a mirage. As the phantasmal glow takes shape into a sign you read the neon letters as they hang over the quaint lot illuminated beneath it - "Motel Betty"! The driver subconsciously slows the car, drawn by the promise of relief. You all look at each other and exchange eager glances of agreement that the appearance of this humble motel is surely an auspicious sign, and that you must stop here for the night. You pull into and park in the ominously empty lot, before making a break for it and quickly dashing through the rain into the lighted entry space of the lobby. Everyone breathes a sigh of relief as they dry themselves off, happily absorbing the dry warmth. The TV glows, the clock is ticking, the light is buzzing, but there's no one there. You hesitate in the stark and abject light before ringing the bell. The shrill call echo's in eerie emptiness. Nothing. Hello? Suddenly, a strange inversion of consciousness comes over you, a sudden fear, an awareness of predation, as you go completely still and your senses rove, and you feel yourself no longer subject but a player in some strange scene. “Motel Betty, well where is Betty anyways? Betty! Betty! You all shout in a moment of communal laughter, shaking off the ill feeling, ahahahahaha...until the protective glow of that happy ambrosia dies away, and you shrink as you feel your rye smiles retract grotesquely in the mirthless opacity of the silence, and you are left alone and bereft with that unsettling feeling once again... It's then you notice that there's a key card on the counter of the concierge desk. Room 011. We'll settle up in the morning, I'm sure it will be fine. Taking the card you all step into the dimly lit hallway, scanning its silent corridors, and following the numbers on the doors in your head as you peer further down its vertiginous chasm. It must be at the end. You all take one last hesitating glance at each other, recognizing the fear in each other's faces that none of you will consciously allow themselves to admit. In spite of your misgivings you all take that first huddle step together and begin walking down the long hallway towards the room that Betty has prepared for you. 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE This was an epic room, the kind you long for as an escape room junky. It's that exciting journey into the heart of a great adventure that you are only too happy to immerse and lose yourself in. It's what escape rooms are meant to be. Peak entertainment, living the fantasy. From the narrative and its slowly uncovered horror, to the atmosphere and its constant sense of suspense and terror, to the set which was an inspired collage of horror movie favorites, the design of the room was totally on point. The moment you step into that first claustrophobic hallway and wonder what the hell awaits you behind those doors, to when you unlock the first door peeking in slowly only to say hell nah, to staring down the long and dark foreboding and unavoidable hallways thinking honey, you go first. It was a real journey to the end of the night. The live actor - and a bow to his/her performance - is used to great effect. They created scenarios that employed the actor in ingenious ways that really set our butts up. The scare factor: they had us tiptoeing through dark alleys, scared to turn around every corner and open any door. It was to the point where I think I literally started to crouch walk through the scarier areas, denoting my reversion to a childlike state. There was one instance where the whole party collectively grabbed each other for safety, screaming as we dropped to the floor. Mostly the puzzles were on point. They were classic and clever, if not often conventional, which is not a bad thing in itself. They did a great job of infusing the more obvious elements of the theme and scenario into the puzzles, making you face your fears, isolating you, and employing the props and lore of the horror genre in creative ways. That being said, when compared with the ideal of mimetic design, they sometimes - sometimes! - suffer from often being those abstract, classic escape room type puzzles, which can feel a bit hair brained and arduous in an unfun way, and which I keep harping on in all these articles. It burns me because though the puzzles are still fun and challenging, so much of the scenario is experienced through puzzles which are often not realistically connected with the nature of the scenario itself. What they often are are just a really well done collage of the best of familiar escape room puzzle tropes, shaped in ingenious ways to work with the horror theme. The tech is quite state of the art, at a level you come to expect of a modern room, and they pushed it to its full potential to create a seamless and immersive experience. The rooms were staged in a full suite of lighting and sound media, something like out of a Vegas magic show. It was a impactive and thematic production, with a big wow factor. I loved the finale. These weird but enchanting scenes of performance and improvisation where the party finally becomes not just players but actors in the great drama of the room. It's the stuff that escape rooms magic is made of. Once again it employs the live actor in a terrifically ingenious and scary way. The end also uses a charming scenario, which I'd seen used before in other rooms, but that I think is a good way of bringing the group all together in a final test of bonding and mutual support that encapsulates the theme of the group collectively leaning on each other to persevere through the horror. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK ( I'm going to be harsh only because I liked the game and its immense promise so much. ) To begin with, the preamble suffers from giving away too much. They shouldn't tell you a damn thing about the story other than what you would naturally know if you were the character you are playing. That is that you took shelter from the storm at this motel, and that you can't find anybody but decide to stay the night using this key card that you mysteriously found on the reception counter. The rest of the story should be uncovered naturally and through your own deductive powers. The narrative, though well told, plausible, complete, in its own way, I feel for a horror scenario to preserve its spell, and that pathological sense of fear it induces, it must maintain a certain seriousness, but the second half, I felt, breaks that immersion when the narrative and aesthetic takes a turn to the fantastic. I would have taken it down a much darker path that is true to the seriousness and dread of its original creepiness.. I wanted IT, Japanese horror, and The Exorcist, as opposed to what I feel was a kind of Disney-fied narrative turn. That being said the second act works really well in a way with the overall narrative, the puzzles, and the props, I just think they could have just fashioned something a lot more adult-horror out of it. The puzzles, oh the puzzles. Well done mimetic rooms set a high bar, and these puzzles are mostly clever, connected with great sets, on theme, as I mentioned, and yet they suffer from being at times merely your classic run of the mill escape room puzzles. And this sense at times of the puzzles being abstract, meaning their logic is disconnected and unrelated to what might realistically be asked of the scenario you are supposed to imagine your in can make them feel tedious and routine. Luckily, I will reiterate that overall it's quite a fun and challenging experience. In terms of the horror factor, as much as they already did use the live actor to great effect, and used isolation and separation to further scare us, and had great lighting and sound cues, and generally kept us on edge, I believe they could have gone even farther, and just taken every opportunity to relentlessly scare the living crap out of us. I think there were some missed opportunities, as well as some moments when they could have employed more non-actor scare props. This might sound like an inane and insane criticism but yes half the fun is built up in that trepidation that a scare lies literally around every corner and behind every object. The walky talky hint system can be janky at times, because either you can't hear it properly or the game masters - who were very good by the way - are sometimes a little distracted. There was a degree of confusion and miscommunication which cost us precious time. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? Hell yes you should. It is arguably the best room in Toronto. An epic two hour horror adventure filled with memorable escape room moments, what more can you ask for. The more rooms I do the more I want longform escape rooms, odysseys, marathons, something that you can really lose yourself in. Multiple hours, clever mimetically (mimetic!) designed puzzles, super-epic narratives, high tech - bigger better faster. I feel like this room is the product of an escape room arms race, in this case a challenge to take the classic horror themed room to the next level. This is the direction the industry should be heading in, a community competing to outdo each other for the sake of the art, all the while mutually inspiring one another to create something better and better. And meanwhile we get to experience it all. I love it. ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Free parking Paid access to board games in a spacious waiting area. It’s a level mod of Fortnite so it can be found on any platform Fortnite is on. At the start, the game eases you in with a few simple tasks to learn the controls but if you are familiar with Fortnite, the controls will be intuitive. As the game progressed, the atmosphere gave off an eerie feel with the dark ambiance and unsettling music. Any game where you need a flashlight, you know something is going to come and scare you. The gameplay was smooth and it was a quick game that could be finished in one sitting. However, something went wrong during her ritual…her body has disappeared into the ether, but her soul has yet to properly move on. As alchemists yourselves, you’re here to try to complete the complex ritual to successfully bring her the peace that she deserves. However, you only have 90 minutes before the end of the triple eclipse that makes such a powerful ritual possible. Can you help Mary to move on in time? 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The setting of The Alchemist is simply incredible. It starts with a marvelous tower in the heart of Amsterdam. And what they've created inside is a masterpiece, crafted with breathtaking magnitude, scientific beauty, and intricate authenticity. You'll want to take time to just pause and take it all in. This room utilizes mechanics in novel ways and at a scale that truly brings the story's magic to life. We were blown away by both wondrous dramatic events and smaller moments peppered throughout the experience, culminating in a stunning conclusion that will drop your jaw one more time. The gameplay is fairly linear, with specific stages to progress through. While most of the puzzles are quite approachable, each stage remained engrossing, and there were several clever, novel challenges. There is minimal searching and a nice variety of challenges, with some ability for adaptive difficulty. While hands-on elements are an escape room mainstay, the specific interactions you will have here are beyond the usual in scope and awe factors. The storyline is engaging and refreshingly unique. For those who are looking for more whimsical or magical options, The Alchemist will delight. You will walk away with a particularly cool memento from your visit. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK We unfortunately experienced several technical difficulties during our game. While this is certainly understandable with a game of this magnitude, there could have been some clearer direction and communication from our GM in those moments. We appreciate the inclusion of adaptive difficulty elements, and one puzzle was removed for us, as we were low on time. However, we were left feeling that we still needed to complete that element. Ideally, players are unaware when such modifications are made or, if need be, notified that the puzzle has been completed/bypassed. There was also some very small text that had to be read in one area that wasn't brightly lit, leaving us wishing for a magnifying glass or something similar. (We’ve got old eyes!) 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? We are in awe of the magic and craftsmanship of this game. Despite a few hiccups in our visit, it was an incredible experience that we won't forget. We're hard-pressed to think of anyone who would not enjoy " The Alchemist " if given the opportunity to play, from casual families to devoted enthusiasts. The only reason not to recommend it for new players is that it might set an unrealistic bar for other games… Hint : Read all instructions completely and carefully. ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO This location is an easy 5 minute walk from Amsterdam's Centraal Station. Players will need to be able to climb steep steps (as in many places in the Netherlands). Bathrooms and a box for your things are available. You must make your way up the tower of the research centre to find the coordinates and send them to our Allies on the frontline. Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The brilliant actors that accompanied and participated in the story brought the game to another level. If you were willing to interact with them, they were happy to interact with you. Each actor also stayed in character as they gave subtle hints and nudges throughout the game. Each room was set up in a non-linear manner which allowed for a lot of do for everyone. The puzzles were all also big enough that more than one person could contribute at a time. Being built in one of the towers of Casa Loma, the puzzles were themed well to the story as well as some of the props were cleverly made to blend into the tower décor. The puzzles were a solid mix of tech of non-tech with a few padlocks along the way which never felt out of place. Each room had progressed us to a different location and area of Casa Loma’s tower which made for nice separation throughout the game. The final puzzle made sure everyone was involved and made for a great finish. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK The amount of people vs. how much there is to do in the room could feel lopsided at times. There were some puzzles that could take people a shorter time to complete than others, which would result in some standing around and watching for some. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This game was a fun blend of escape room and immersive experience. There was a range of tech and non tech puzzles with very minimal padlocks. The flow of the game and how they incorporated the story worked well with the environment. The actors playing the characters and guiding you though was the highlight of the game. Anyone who is a fan of immersive experiences, actors in escape rooms and World War II would have a great time in the game. Since it is a public booking, if you want to see more of the puzzles, then look for a time with less people. Though, we did play with 10 people and even with this full crowd, we had a great experience playing this game. This would also be a fun, casual experience for many friends if you are willing to book out the whole game. - REMOTE: Secret City (Casa Loma Escape) - "Murdoch Mysteries: The Secret of Station House No. 4"
Photos provided by Secret City (Casa Loma Escape Series) Company: Secret City (Casa Loma Escape Series) Game: Murdoch Mysteries: The Secret of Station House No. 4 Country: Canada 🇨🇦 Language: English Type of Game: Remote Escape Room 🗣 Genre: Detective Date Played: 4/2/2021 Difficulty (based on 5 players): 5/10 Size of Team: 4-8 Players Time: 60 Minutes Price: $25/ pp 🆃🅷🅴 🆂🆃🅾🆁🆈 It is the 1890s. William Murdoch, Canada's greatest detective has gone missing! You are the new constables at Station House No. 4. Can you uncover its secrets? 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 This game was staged in an actual escape room where we utilized a live avatar as our eyes and hands to interact with the items/puzzles in the room. The game was played over the Google Meet interface. The quality of the pictures were not as clear as Zoom and sometimes did lag during the game. But our avatar totally made up for these glitches and bought this online experience to the next level. He knows how to control his camera angles, "fix" unexpected situations (like the internet lags), and cracked us up with his witty jokes, Check out this short documentary he made in regards to being a game master. This is the first time we've used a build-in inventory system from Google Meet. It works similar to Telescape where items in the room will be "transported" to you in image formats so you can have a closer look at the clues. Make sure to note that there are tabs that will take you to different sections of the game. Some items felt like they needed to be enlarged even more as they're quite hard to see. The GM who's in control of putting items in and out of the inventory system did a great job as it's pretty seamless with the GM's actions. One additional feature this game that we haven't seen other games provide was the recap at the end of the game. Our GM took the time to ask if we had any questions on any of the puzzles and did a quick run through on all of them. This was great for teammates who might have missed any puzzles or information during the "divide and conquer" exploration. 🆃🅷🅴 🅿🆄🆉🆉🅻🅴🆂 The 360 photos of the rooms were great as we're able to divide and conquer. There was a good amount of searching and some areas were not be visible on camera so Frank did a great job with his subtle nudges. One the of clue images was still hard to see in the inventory and this made it a bit more difficult for us to determine if we're on the right track or not as we didn't realize the correlation of what we figured out and what was on the image. Other than that we're quite happy with the various type of puzzles (Math, Science, logic, etc.) and the spaciousness of the room for us to sleuth around. 🅲🅻🅾🆂🅸🅽🅶 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 I never laughed so much throughout a remote escape game. Most of the time we'll be concentrating on solving puzzles but this time I decided to enjoy myself more by sitting back and watching our players interaction with Frank instead. Frank was acting versus game mastering. It's not a skill to be expected in every GM but if you get one that's really good at it, definitely savor everything moment. Since we are unable to enjoy this game in person, our entire experience is put into the hands of GMs. This is a clear case of "a GM can make or break a game". With improvements on the camera feeds, this game could easily make it onto our "favorite games list". ❤ 𝔼𝕊ℂ𝔸ℙ𝔼𝕋ℍ𝔼ℝ𝕆𝕆𝕄𝕖𝕣𝕤 ℙ𝕒𝕥𝕣𝕠𝕟❜𝕤 𝕋𝕙𝕠𝕦𝕘𝕙𝕥𝕤 Jacqueline G. - Remote escape rooms are my favorite type of online escape rooms because I love to interact with the GM and see their performance. This GM not only put a lot of effort into his character but he never slipped up and went as far as acting with his hands which is something that feels hard to accomplish. He was funny, helpful, and interesting. I can’t say enough good things about this GM. The escape room was both intricate and intriguing. We finished right at the 60 minute mark and we had 5 players figuring things out. The only negative thing I can even say about this room is that the camera quality wasn’t fantastic so it was a bit hard to see some of the things that we needed to find however the GM eased that concern a bit with his camera angles. There were many different puzzles all of varying difficulties and challenges. The theme was one I have not experienced before and they did it very well. I would definitely play more if their games in person or online. Highly recommend. *** This game can no longer be booked as a remote game but can still be booked as an in-person experience *** (If you do decide to try this game, give us a shoutout or tag us on social media so we know you heard it from " ESCAPETHEROOMers "!)
