- The Deadbolt Mystery Society - "Skeletons in the Closet"
Photo above is property of The Deadbolt Mystery Society Company: The Deadbolt Mystery Society Game: Skeletons in the Closet Country: USA 🇺🇸 Language: English Type of Game: Tabletop Game 📬 Genre: Detective Date Played: April 10, 2024 Difficulty (based on 2 players): 6/10 Size of Team: Unlimited (Recommended 1 to 4 ppl) Time: Unlimited (Approximately 2.5 Hrs) Price: $28.99 USD 🆃🅷🅴 🆂🆃🅾🆁🆈 The kids are not alright... Walter always suspected that someone within his inheriting family was greedy enough to kill him for his fortune, he just didn't know who or when. If he couldn't save himself, then he at least had enough strength to entrap his inevitable killer. And now, by his death, all the suspects have gathered to mourn - and be investigated. No one would have known any better than to think that his passing was anything more than natural if it were not for the very pointed message he left - which you now read understandingly - indicating that it wasn't. Honor the memory of the man through, and follow his direction from beyond the grave to find the killer Walter Hudson knew was coming. 🆃🅷🅴 ❞🅻🅾🅾🅺🆂❞ As always, a top notch production. They've come a long way to ensuring that every piece of the game meets a certain aesthetic standard, which we might term “puzzle art”; symbolically identifiable, logically intelligible, and artistically appreciable. The aesthetic do a great job of communicating the well worn theme and setting: old money murder mystery - with the spoiled children, snooty portraits, aristocratic old world decor, gold frames and dark grains, and remote twenty bedroom mansions, lurking with secrets, family crests, confidential envelopes, and a will that shocks the room. I tend to always classify each piece into two camps: they are either cartoony and campy, playfully macabre, as befits the lighthearted nature of the games, or like actually approaching something serious, grim and murky, which connects more with the murder theme which is universal to each case. Photo above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 Though the story is a bit well worn, I think it's a great premise for a mystery box, both thematically as a classical whodunit, with quite the added twist, and formally as the setup to a deductive process where you will be reconstructing the logic of the movements and means of the suspects, as well as identifying the logic of their particular character traits and connections to each other. In the game you are essentially following the trail of breadcrumbs left for you by the deceased in the hopes that the information you gather will allow you to properly deduce the killer. You can roam freely around the house, exploring the enveloped gated rooms and their mysteries, all while simultaneously using the map and the information you glean about each suspect to construct a portrait of the evidence. I like the fact that I can see in each Deadbolt box that there is an effort not only to come up with novel puzzles, but also innovative formats to the mysteries. From a formal standpoint this box is very satisfying. It simultaneously gives you the freedom to explore while also giving you a framework to piece all the bits of information you glean together, slowly building an image of the suspects in all their ignoble glory, using each to outsmart the one amongst them who thought they might be smarter than them all. The second phase that awaits you once you collect all the requisite information introduces you to a more challenging series of interconnected puzzles, and then the final phase, which is very mechanically satisfying, has you put it all together, tracing the developments of the movement of the suspects based on a deciphering the cryptic information that encompasses all the little bits you've learned about them. Photo above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅿🆄🆉🆉🅻🅴🆂 The puzzles are a bit on the easier side, though what i like most is that the puzzles are not the only layer of the mystery, in fact you are taking all the narrative information you receive via the base puzzles to construct a second layer of evidence which will allow you to finally trace the path of developments in the finale. Again, I love this game setup, the combination of puzzle and narrative, the bringing it all back home at the end by piecing everything you've learned together. It incorporates the entire game, makes use of the whole process, making it build up like a story, while also expanding the deductive challenge to encompass everything. It's one part puzzle, another part good old fashion detective work, bringing together the two best sides of mystery game coin. Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🅲🅻🅾🆂🅸🅽🅶 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 The Deadbolt Mystery Society boxes never fail to impress or entertain, they have a good track record of consistently keeping it fresh. It's a mix of tried and true classic puzzles, all woven together in a satisfying game structure. In a way it's one of their more straightforward boxes, though from a structural standpoint very well put together and satisfying to play. I think Deadbolt is in a position where they have pretty much perfected the formula - but that what makes the games good is also what limits them in another sense, meaning ironically that the more they tend towards the mean in the design and challenge of their games, the more they miss the opportunity to innovate beyond what they imagine the experience the average consumer desires to have. This is a good problem to have, and I think now that the boxes have really caught on, they are the perfect candidates to push the genre forward, and create something of a new line of their mystery boxes that are out of their wildest and most inventive dreams. - Get Out Room - "Blind Fury"
LOCATION: Warsaw, Poland Photo above is property of Get Out Room 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME : Blind Fury (Ślepa Furia) 📅 DATE PLAYED : March 24, 2024 🎬 GENRE : Mystery, Horror 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 5 ppl) : 6/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS : 2-5 ppl (Ages 14+, 16+ w/ actor) 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME : 90 Mins. 💰 PRICE : PLN 90-225/ pp (based on # of ppl) ☎️ BOOKING TYPE : Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED? : Yes 📖 THE STORY Thirty years ago, there was a nationwide uproar when a series of kidnappings paralyzed society. The ruthless cruelty of the bandits who abused the kidnapped knew no bounds. The rule was simple, the family had to pay the ransom or never see their tortured family members again. Unfortunately, when the police tracked down the hideout, the kidnappers managed to escape with the cash. It's been 30 years since these events, and just when everyone has forgotten, information has surfaced online that some of the money from their criminal activities is hidden in a family cottage somewhere outside the city. The big unknown, however, is whether the kidnappers are still alive . It may be worth the risk and find the money. Do you dare? Video above is property of Get Out Room 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE Very interesting way to give all the info about the upcoming game. Before the Room you will receive sms with all the necessary info about your future adventure and I’d like to say that this sms is written in a very mysterious way, so you can get excited. You will not face any game masters or some other stuff before the game. All the rules are written on the paper and you just sign it and start the story. It is a good idea because it is much easier to get into the game without long-lasting list of rules and restrictions. The game takes place in the single construction works and looks real and frightening, especially in the dark. A lot of interesting puzzles. Option to play with an actor. If you are 16+ you can choose to play the game with an actor. This option is available only on weekends. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Having an actor is not always a good idea. The story and everything plays wonderfully before the first appearance of the actor. We anticipated an evil guy but got a person who just chatted with us and helped to solve puzzles. It’s a bit frustrating because according to the story we came to rob the house and the owner was supposed to stop us. Story is confusing. From the description it seemed to us that we had to find the money, and it is one of the main goals in the game, but, unfortunately, during your play you will hardly hear about them. Be careful with self-tapping screws. You can hurt yourself while interacting with some decorations. Time killers puzzles. We mean those sorts of puzzles when you have already got the solution but you have to apply it. And it takes a lot of time. Lack of safe deposit box rules. Sometimes it is not obvious how to open a safe if you even know the right code combination. In some cases you have to press something like “#” or “*” before entering the right code and it can be 3 or 4 numbers in combination. So it would be nice to have opening pattern, for example: #****#. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? In our humble opinion it is better to play this game without an actor because he only ruins the mysterious atmosphere and raises questions. Who is he? Why is he helping us? Why do you have to listen to him? For those who have never played escape rooms with an actor it can be fun, but for more experienced players it is absolutely unnecessary. This escape room will be good for inexperienced players and those who like mysterious atmospheres and puzzles. ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Street parking Storage bins available in lobby Buzz for entrance only when it's your booking time The game is located in a detached house. It can be a bit cold during autumn and winter Photos above are property of Get Out Room (If you do decide to try this game, give us a shoutout or tag us on social media so we know you heard it from " ESCAPETHEROOMers "!) #PavelShyshou #IRLescaperoom #EscapeRooms #GetOutRoom #Mystery #Horror #Warsaw #Poland
- AdventureRooms Bern - "Motel Nevada"
LOCATION: Bern, Switzerland Photo above is property of AdventureRooms Bern Photo above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME : Motel Nevada 📅 DATE PLAYED : May 18, 2024 🎬 GENRE : Thriller 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 3 ppl) : 6/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS : 3-6 ppl (Classic), 3-12 ppl (Duel) 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME : 60 Mins. 💰 PRICE : CHF 49.00 (2 ppl) - CHF 34.00 (6 ppl) (based on game style and # of ppl) ☎️ BOOKING TYPE : Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED? : Yes [38:00] 📖 THE STORY During your road trip through Nevada, your car suddenly breaks down. After calling for help, at a nearby payphone, you learn it’ll be quite some time before a mechanic can arrive and since the desert nights can get very cold you decide to look for shelter. Luckily, the neon lights from a nearby motel catch your attention and you head over in search of a room… Video above is property of AdventureRooms Bern 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The story begins in an immersive manner as we appear to be literally driving along a Nevadan highway. We liked how such a simple, yet effective special effect, could add such a layer of whimsy to the game at such an early stage. The overall look of the game is thematically strong, particularly with the paint and props found in the first room. There are many interesting and joyous elements for you to look at and even interact with, but not too many that you become overwhelmed. The story telling component of the game was undoubtedly the strongest part. It provided an immersive and interactive experience that elevates it above other standard escape rooms. Here, our journey took a sharp turn about midway through. Initially, our instinct was that we’d be met by some axe-wielding maniac, like in the " Psycho " movies… however, that was not to be; although that’s not to say someone, or something else, wasn’t waiting for us… The puzzles were all thematically linked to the story. The actions you take, particularly in the first room, were logical and conducive to the precession of the story. The second room is smaller, offering a sillier selection of tasks, before things get a bit more serious and quizzical for the remainder. Overall, we enjoyed how interactive the whole game was and that it offered something ‘different’ to what escapers may typically be used to. Players are rewarded with a certificate at the end of the game which was a welcomed small memento of our time inside this unique room. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK As interactive and light as the puzzles were, it would have been good to have seen more cooperative and team-based challenges. We found the climax of the game to be a little flat, despite actually being playful. We weren’t sure if the game was finished or not and one of our team hadn’t seen the film the ending tried to emulate, therefore, missing the ‘joke’, which we naturally explained to him after. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? Yes. " Motel Nevada " is definitely worth playing for all levels of escapers. The story offers a fun twist and the aesthetics are great. We recommend playing as a group of three due to the lack of multiplayer puzzles and some tight room spaces. ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Parking is not available on site. Free parking is available on the residential streets either side of the escape room. There is a lobby area with comfortable seating and some soft drinks available for purchase. - Questerland - "Apocalypse 2213"
LOCATION: Prague, Czech Republic Photo above is property of Questerland 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME : Apocalypse 2213 📅 DATE PLAYED : May 9, 2024 🎬 GENRE: Apocalyptic 🧠 DI FFICULTY (Based on 3 ppl) : 5/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS : 2-5 ppl 🕒 LENGT H OF T IME : 60 Mins. 💰 PRICE : 1390-1990 CZK ☎️ BOOKING TYPE : Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED? : Yes [31:17] 📖 THE STORY After the spread of the terrible zombie virus, humanity was forced underground where they built cities with life support systems. For decades scientists have been trying to develop a vaccine against zombies, in the hope of finally leaving the bunkers. Professor Adams is believed to have been successful in creating such a vaccine that turns the zombies back into humans, but suddenly the professor has vanished… You are scientists from another underground lab. Your mission is to get into the professor’s laboratory and find the vaccine. But it will not be that simple. His laboratory is a bunker with advanced security, and even if you do get inside, the vaccine is protected. It is necessary to work quickly and efficiently, as the system will self-destruct the bunker in 60 minutes! Humans are waiting for your rescue team with the hope of seeing the sun again. 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE Questerland are known for their large scale, high production set designs, which are filled with thematic props and atmospheric light and sound effects. The overall appearance of the room fits with the underground bunker theme nicely; the arched ceiling was a nice touch. I wouldn’t call this room scary in any way, however there is a dark undertone achieved which provides a creepy atmosphere. Story-wise, I am not sure why we start the game locked separately in different rooms; however, we did enjoy the cooperative nature it made our challenge to reunite. Communication through the door was important to solving several hands-on puzzles. The cooperative nature of the puzzles continues throughout, often the puzzles are best solved with two people working side by side. We did find that the puzzles had a relationship with the theme, but they weren’t necessarily linked to one another or the story as a whole . Questerland may have one of the best lobby areas in Prague. There is a bar which serves drinks and snacks, as well as numerous family boardgames for you to play. This space is bright and open and also used to house parties and special events. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Whilst the individual spaces within the room looked impressive at a distance, when you look closely at the finer details you notice a lack of authenticity with many of the materials, such as the use of painted Styrofoam walls. Although we appreciated that many of the puzzles had a cooperative nature to them, this dynamic could have been enhanced further if the components were separated in the room, rather than having players work side by side. This would force players to add verbal communication as an extra layer for achieving success. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This is definitely a great room for newer teams to play, due to the simplicity of the puzzles and the thematic setting which provides an immersive experience. We were told that our game was the easiest they have on offer, so we are definitely interested to come back and try their more challenging adventures! ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Parking is not available on site. However, there is street parking in the surrounding area. As mentioned, there is a large event hall with a bar, and areas to relax before your game. Lockers are also provided. - Agent Brains Escape Games - "Back to the Future: Escape the 80’s"
LOCATION: Letchworth, England, United Kingdom Photo above is property of Agent Brains Escape Games Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME : Back to the Future: Escape the 80's 📅 DATE PLAYED : March 8, 2024 🎬 GENRE : Sci-Fi 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 3 ppl) : 6/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS : Up to 6 ppl 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME : 60 Mins. 💰 PRICE : £18-30/ pp (based on # of ppl and peak vs. off-peak booking times) ☎️ BOOKING TYPE : Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED? : Yes 📖 THE STORY The infamous Dr. Nogood, the nemesis of Agent Brains, has created a time machine and gone back to create some mayhem! As agents of Agent Brains, you’ve been sent back to the 80’s and his teenage bedroom. Now, you must find the time machine and use it to escape back to the future, getting it safely out of his hands. 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE Great Scott! We really felt like we were right back in the 80s. The owners have done an incredible job in the theming, with authentic 80’s nostalgia galore! In a fun twist, they even give you a choice before starting of which 80’s mixtape to play as the soundtrack for your game. So whether your group prefers hair bands, synth pop, or whatever else, there’s something sure to keep you jammin’ out. The 80’s memorabilia is so extensive, it’s definitely tempting to spend a lot of time just playing around and checking out some of the pieces. As children of the 80’s, we were had an absolute blast, and I can imagine it would be fun for younger folks to experience what it was like “back in the day”. (This is seriously what video games were like when you were a kid?!) It was easy to be distracted from the puzzles by the delightful decor, but they were well-integrated and themed. There is some tricky searching to be done, and some fun discoveries along the way. There are quite a few padlocks, but also some tech-based puzzles and reveals. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK The story didn’t 100% make sense to me, and I would have loved a bit more info. I hate to suggest any changes to the room set, because it’s an absolute gem! But it would be awesome to see a little more of Nogood’s villain-y side represented, like with posters of famous 80’s villains perhaps (though those are probably harder to source). While I certainly wouldn’t take anything away from the awesomeness that they’ve created, it’s worth noting that some items could be perceived as mild red herrings. There are definitely aspects of the room that are just there to help recreate that 80’s bedroom feel but may still draw you in! 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? " Back to the Future: Escape the 80's " is an absolute dream of a game for children of the 80’s, and I’d venture to say for anyone who appreciates a whimsical environment. It’s hard not to smile in that room. It’s certainly family-friendly (with kids 10+ allowed), would be do-able by newer players (potentially with some help), and a top pick for those looking for an immersive experience. So…there’s really no excuse not to play. This game just might be your density. I mean your destiny! ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Agent Brains Escape Games has two locations a few minutes walk apart. Their main one, where this game is located, is on a super cute little street in Letchworth Garden City, a short walk from the train station. There are lots of coffee shops, restaurants, bars, and other stores aplenty to check out and fuel up before or after your game. There’s a nice little reception area, bathroom (with some quirky branding), absolutely lovely staff, and hooks in the rooms for your things. They all belong to the umbrella corporation of Ravenchase Adventures but operate separately. We heard great things about a room that was originally at Escape Room Herndon that they said we had to try – “Supervillains”. Since this room moved over to Escape Room Arlington, a lot has been changed so if you played it before at Escape Room Herndon perhaps you should give it another try here. There’s a few parking lots in the area but the best one is located across the street from them. The lobby waiting area is very spacious and can easy hold large groups. Now who doesn’t love being a superhero and saving the world? Especially when it’s the ones from the DC comics? As we hydrated ourselves, used the restroom, and tightened our shoelaces, we were ready to enter the comic realm to capture the 4 villains that escaped and save the city. This room is quite large, so we did have to “travel” a good amount back and forth to complete our mission. It was really fun to work as a "Dynamic Duo" tackling different puzzles in different realms and regroup again in the headquarters. We liked the design of the room a lot as each villain had their special “look” and the puzzles all revolved around their characters. There was one puzzle that we were stuck on that we thought we had to use outside knowledge to solve it, but we were impressed after receiving the hint that everything needed was hidden in plain sight. This room used just enough mixture of locks and tech for the puzzles. We escaped with just the two of us and some time to spare but we can totally see a group of friends enjoying this room together as explained prior that this is not really a linear room and you can divide and conquer. We had a great time saving the world and had so much fun that we didn’t want it to end. It’s too bad we didn’t have enough time to try their other rooms at this location (Mind Trap, Secret in the Attic, and Glitch) as we would’ve definitely wanted to see what other amazing creations was behind this innovative company. They also have a new room coming out called “Poe’s Chamber” which we would love to try whenever we are back in the VA area again. LOCATION: Arlington, Virginia, USA Photo above is property of Escape Room Arlington Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME: Mind Trap 📅 DATE PLAYED: February 28, 2021 🎬 GENRE: Thriller 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 2 ppl): 4.5/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS: 1-8 ppl 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME: 60 Mins 💰 PRICE: $30.00/ pp ☎️ BOOKING TYPE: Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED?: Yes 📖 THE STORY You have been cordially invited to the good doctor's dinner party. You enter the room and notice that none of the other guests have arrived. You begin to wonder if something strange is going on but it's too late, you are now trapped inside his dining room. You realize that your host has orchestrated a couple of deadly games and you must solve them before he returns... Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The vibe of this room is incredibly eerie! From the dark green walls to the hickory wood cabinetry, the set design gave us chills before even starting to play! There were so many items in there that resembled Hannibal Lecter's dining room! The storyline is an obvious classic and definitely puts players into survival mode. Due to the predicament that you're in, there's a sense of urgency to escape knowing that someone is going to return in an hour (if you're lucky, you might even receive a few jump scare moments). There were some really unique puzzles and different types of reveals that we haven't seen before. The fact that the doctor likes to play games, that could've opened the door for any type of puzzles. However, all of the challenges were part of the set design and there was a good mixture of traditional and tech types. We're always concerned about an escape room game building up to a grand finale and it fails to deliver. With "Mind Trap", this was not the case. "Mind Trap" literally puts you in the driver seat as a victim inside of a psychological thriller! 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Overall, "Mind Trap" was a pretty solid game. If we had to nitpick, there was one puzzle that we were unclear which way we're suppose to visualize it. The prop also didn't fit as nicely so it was kind of hard to detect the actual solution. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? "Mind Trap" felt like a combination of the films - "Hannibal" and "Would You Rather"! A perfect blend of thriller and survival obstacles to warm up your appetite. There are no live actors in this game and based on the set design, you'll be thankful that there aren't any. I wouldn't classify "Mind Trap" as a horror game as it has more of a psychological thriller feel to it. There were some really unique puzzles and creative reveals in this game that we were so glad to experience in person. ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Street parking available Parking lot near by Lobby with waiting area Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers Check out our YouTube video for a sneak peek of the location, interview with the manager, the room(s) (no puzzle spoilers) and more: Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers (If you do decide to try this game, give us a shoutout or tag us on social media so we know you heard it from "ESCAPETHEROOMers Disclosure: We thank Escape Room Arlington for comping our tickets for this game. Suddenly, you were chosen to travel through time. The time machine needs you to gather artifacts from different eras, otherwise, it will vanish forever. The artifacts were all in the places where a significant event or catastrophe happened. Can you solve the problems and retrieve all the artifacts in time? 🆃🅷🅴 ❞🅻🅾🅾🅺🆂❞ The graphics of the game were fantastic. There wasn't a video to tell you stories that many online games have. Instead, I had to read the stories along with the images. The pictures matched the theme and story well. I was never bored because I traveled to unique places in different eras within the game. I was immersed in the game deeply with the exciting stories and engaging images of each scene. 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 The game was entirely playable online, no printing was necessary. Photos above are property of It's a Lock Escapes 🆃🅷🅴 🅿🆄🆉🆉🅻🅴🆂 The structure of the game was easy to understand. It was linear. I read a story about a particular time and entered a puzzle section of the scene. Once I solved the puzzles in the section, I moved on to a new set of scenes and puzzles in the next time zone. Most of the puzzles were classic ones that you may see in escape rooms or puzzle books, such as a cryptogram and various logic puzzles. I loved that some of them had a little twist. Some of the puzzles were challenging. All the puzzles fit well with the theme and the stories of the eras. I liked the hint system. The icons of step-by-step hints appeared on the screen as time passed. I was able to check the answers if I needed to. A minor thing, one of the puzzles was a little bit confusing to have the correct answer because of how it was presented. I felt the instruction was not specific enough for me. I had to try entering answers differently a few times to get the right one. Overall, I enjoyed that the game had many types of fun classic puzzles and stories of time travel with charming images from different historical moments. Photos above are property of It's a Lock Escapes 🅲🅻🅾🆂🅸🅽🅶 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 “The Time Collector” was a fun online puzzle game to collect artifacts from different eras by traveling through time. The game is not an escape room, but it is a perfect puzzle game for a fun game night for friends and family or for solo players who enjoy stories and traditional puzzles. We were enthralled by the arc of the game and found the video enhancements engaging to watch. Both the very beginning and the climax were particular highlights. The actual construction of the room and some of the materials used might not be to the highest level and the room is beginning to look a bit dated in places, however the props and accessories really bring the game to life and make the game highly immersive; starting the game with an actual beer, served by an actual barmaid is always going to be a highlight for most. But that is not where the authentic props stop, throughout the game you’ll encounter many engaging and occasionally surprising additions. For our group, we found this to be one of the most immersive rooms in all of Prague. The puzzles definitely play their part in the storytelling and immersion. Each serves its place both thematically and logically. We enjoyed interacting with our surroundings and finding numerous collaborative puzzles, with our favorites all coming in the last segment of the game. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Other than looking a little tired, compared to many of the others we just played in Prague, there is little to complain about in this room. Overall, it offers a very tight and cohesive experience. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This is definitely one of the more difficult games in Prague. The puzzles offer varying degrees of difficulty, so expect a challenge when playing this game. However, the experience is certainly rewarding from an immersive storytelling perspective, so it comes with a high level of recommendation from us. The rooms are not the largest and the puzzles tend to take place around specific areas, so we wouldn’t recommend playing with more than four. Three was a good team size, two might be too few. ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Parking is not available on site. However, there is street parking in the surrounding area. There isn’t really a lobby as you go straight into the Bar. Bags, coats, etc. are stored in the bar. - The Deadbolt Mystery Society - "The Unknown Passenger"
Photo above is property of The Deadbolt Mystery Society Company: The Deadbolt Mystery Society Game: The Unknown Passenger Country: USA 🇺🇸 Language: English Type of Game: Tabletop Game 📬 Genre: Mystery, Murder Date Played: April 12, 2024 Difficulty (based on 4 players): 5/10 Size of Team: Unlimited (Recommended 1 to 4 ppl) Time: Unlimited (Recommended 2 - 3 Hrs) Price: $36.99 USD 🆃🅷🅴 🆂🆃🅾🆁🆈 Boarding the passenger train, The Olympian, looking for a small vacation, it seems you won’t be getting one. During the evening, someone was found murdered and hidden under a dining cart. The odd thing is that there is no record that they should be on the train, neither a passenger nor crew. Who are they and why are they here? 🆃🅷🅴 ❞🅻🅾🅾🅺🆂❞ Opening the branded box with " The Unknown Passenger " artwork, we found the “Start Here” sheet for new detectives, a collectible card and sticker, as well as a Beginning Brief, a page of interviews, the passenger manifest, a shoelace and more. Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅶🅰🅼🅴 🅿🅻🅰🆈 Opening the box, we started the experience by reading the “Beginning Brief” sheet which kicked off the story for us as well as gave us directions on what we should look at first. For those who are new to DMS, how the game progresses is once we solve the puzzles or believe we know key information, we would scan QR codes and input the information. If we were right, something would open and continue the story or tell us more information. To proceed through the story, they would also have envelopes with more clues and information for us to read once we were told to do so. As usual, DMS has been stepping up their gameplay. First off, they did change the system to input the solution. For a couple of the more detailed questions we needed to answer, rather than having a pdf and using your solution as the password, there was a system in place that required a few detailed questions to unlock the next part of the story. This time around, there were also some point and click components with audio that we got to experience that made us feel like true detectives as we investigated locations. The story writing was fantastic as each envelope presented us with new information as we continued. It was gripping and progressed like a mystery novel and some great reveals throughout. Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🆃🅷🅴 🅿🆄🆉🆉🅻🅴🆂 There were different puzzles which included manipulating things and linking key items together. There were also 2 puzzles that took some effort to complete, which required creating timelines and as well as comparing statements to find inconsistencies. How the hint system works is there is a document that can be downloaded online. It is a nicely formatted pdf that presents a table of contents at the start that we could find the puzzle we need hints on and go to that page. There are sufficient tiers provided for each of the puzzles. The solutions are provided in a separate document. Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🅲🅻🅾🆂🅸🅽🅶 🆃🅷🅾🆄🅶🅷🆃🆂 " The Unknown Passenger " was an amazing experience to play through and as veteran DMS players, we loved some of the new aspects that kept the game fresh. Things like the point and click parts of the game as well as the new interface to answer questions to proceed with the game was exciting to see. The puzzles and storytelling both flowed nicely together to make us feel like true detectives. We completed the game in just under 2 hours with 4 people and found that to be a perfect number as we could share ideas and see everything together. Any armchair detective would love this game. Next stop, a gripping mystery experience for a fun night in. (If you do decide to try this game, give us a shoutout or tag us on social media so we know you heard it from " ESCAPETHEROOMers "!) - The Great Escape Room Challenge - "Murder Mystery: Missing in Blue"
LOCATION: Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA Photo above is property of The Great Escape Room Challenge Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME : Murder Mystery: Missing in Blue 📅 DATE PLAYED : May 9, 2024 🎬 GENRE : Murder Mystery, Detective 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 2 ppl) : 6.5/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS : 2-6 ppl (Ages 18+) 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME : 60 Mins 💰 PRICE : $30.00/ pp ☎️ BOOKING TYPE : Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED? : Yes 📖 THE STORY You've been assigned a case for a missing officer. What do you think you'll discover at his home? Where could he have gone? You're gonna need a miracle to solve this one... Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The storyline is what intrigues the player to keep playing the game. The finale gives a twisted ending that only a lucky few will be able to discover. The set design was staged like a crime scene where clues are left behind by the officer for the players to find and analyze. There is a dramatic scenery change (if you get to see it) that is an impactful ending to the storyline. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK There are WAY too much information given to the players in this game. A lot of the information might be related to the backstory but because there's only one hour to play the game, it's very difficult for the players to sift through them to see what's needed for solving a puzzle and what is just a red herring. Directions are need for many puzzles as to where to input answers (too many lock boxes and keypads to try them on), what clues to use for them and in what order to input the answers in. It is already very difficult to see in the dark so finding things would be more difficult. There shouldn't be too many "search and find" elements in this game. There is a audio puzzle that requires a fairly complicated deduction process. We suggest having a print out instead of having to share a small audio device This game is too linear. For a game with so many puzzles you need to be able to have players be able to do different things at once. Or else the group is bound to fail. Some decor in the room doesn't make any sense to the storyline. The ending felt anticlimactic. We were hoping to have a more dramatic way to presenting the conclusion as it is a "shocking" discovery. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? The GM has already warned us that this is their most difficult game with a 1% escape rate (even with hints, we didn't get to finish until a bit past 1.5 hours) . Not many people would even see past their second room. We felt pretty bummed about that as this room has a great story concept and the last room is the one that should be revealed to all the players for that "wow" moment. We have given a lot of suggestions to the owner so hopefully this game will be able to be improved with a much better game flow for players to have a better chance to get to the finish line. ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Free parking right in front Lobby area with seating available Merchandise available for purchase Adults 18+ only. Today, we arrived at their Timonium, MD location. They currently have 44 locations in the US and 1 in South Africa! This location is located in between two large parking lots so there’s plenty of spaces available. If you are hungry, you can easily grab something to eat before or after in the complex. As we entered the “Zen” tree pathway, we easily saw the big Breakout Games sign from far away. The lobby is quite spacious with plenty of seating, complimentary water, and a good selection of merchandise for you to look at while you wait for your game. We were greeted by the general manager who personally served as our game master. This location currently has 7 escape games and we chose to do their newest room - “Runaway Train”. As the game master explained the normal escape room etiquettes to us, we were eager to start our cross-continental journey on their Breakout Express. With the visual effects, sound, and the well-made set design (the seats felt like genuine leather!), we instantly felt immersed with an urgent situation. As the radicals took over the conductor’s cabin to plant explosives to denote at Central Station, our mission is to stop the attack and bring all the passengers to safety. We liked how they incorporated the passing of the train stops as a timer versus the normal count down. We were stumped on our weakness once again: searching for things. We could not find this one item for probably a whole 5 minutes! We were asking for assistance, but our gamemaster wasn’t going to give up the answer that easy considering his military background (you better be on your good behavior when you play his rooms! He’s also a sword forger!), we had to earn it. We finally found it along with a “duh” moment and rushed through the rest of the game. There was a good amount of traditional and cool tech puzzles that we haven’t seen before. We liked how the puzzles stuck with the theme of the room and utilized what we would need to do in a train in this situation. We did get out with just the two of us with minute to spare. The minor suggestion we have for Breakout would probably be for the room design. If we can had a bit more “surprising” aspects or “wow” moments (without giving away too much), it would really add on to the experience. Other than that, it was a pretty solid room. Since we will be in VA, we decided to try their “Island Escape” room at the Breakout Games DC location (this is how it’s listed on their website, but the actual location is in VA). If you played both games before, we would love to hear your opinion on which is your favorite? - Breakout Games (Falls Church) - "Island Escape"
LOCATION: Falls Church, Virginia, USA Photo above is property of Breakout Games 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME: Island Escape 📅 DATE PLAYED: July 5, 2019 🎬 GENRE: Adventure, Survival 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 2 ppl): 7.5/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS: Up to 8 ppl 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME: 60 Mins 💰 PRICE: $23.99 - $37.99/ pp (pending on group size) ☎️ BOOKING TYPE: Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED?: Yes Read our review of “Runaway Train" at Breakout Games for more information about their Timonium, Maryland location. Falls Church, Virginia is actually where Breakout Games DC is located. Falls Church is an independent city in the commonwealth of Virginia. It is included in the Washington DC metropolitan area. Since Breakout Games already has a few Virginia locations, they decided to brand their name "Breakout Games DC" to attract more customers. There’s plenty of parking right in front of the facility. The entrance to the lobby is located on the 2nd floor. Like their other locations, there’s plenty of seating with complimentary water and merchandise available. From a décor aspect, we do feel Timonium, MD feels newer. There’s a total of 6 escape games at this location. We picked “Island Escape” as it’s the only one that we were able to fit into our schedule. After a quick debrief, we were sent to an island to enjoy our vacation. Little did we know, that a volcano is about the explode on this island and of course everyone else evacuated already except for us. With only one boat left available for departure, we have to find the keys to safely evacuate before the lava covers the land. This room is pretty linear and you really can’t move on until you solve a puzzle which leads to the next one. The room size is also pretty good for just the two of us. I would say a max of 4 people would be comfortable for this game as anymore may feel a bit cramped. You also probably won’t need that many people on one puzzle. Although the room’s décor stuck to the theme of the island feel with its art and props, we still felt like we were just in a room. The puzzles did stick with the theme throughout, but it was all within the “classic” types of puzzles. There was one particular prop that gave the room a bit of a “pop”, but it would’ve been great to see a bit more innovation on the puzzle design. We were stuck on some puzzles at the beginning as traditionally we would probably didn't think about reusing something, but this was quickly realized after our first hint. We got out with a minute to spare with just the two of us. There’s definitely a good amount of puzzles in there so I wouldn’t waste time. This room would be a fun family room as I coPhould see some kids logically solving most of it. We felt very “refreshed” after this room and had a sudden urge to go on vacation only to realize our next stop is yet, another escape room. No complaints here! Escapees for life! Breakout Games also has escape games that can be delivered to the comfort of your own home called “Dispatch”. We recently received our package and we're eager to unbox and share our thoughts with you guys soon! If you have already played “Dispatch”, leave your comments below on your thoughts about the game (no spoilers please)! ** UPDATE - We regret to inform you that "Breakout Games DC" has closed its doors. - Breakout Games (Woburn) - "Operation: Casino"
LOCATION: Woburn, Massachusetts, USA Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME: Operation: Casino 📅 DATE PLAYED: February 9, 2020 🎬 GENRE: Espionage 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 2 ppl): 6/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS: 2-8 ppl 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME: 60 Mins. 💰 PRICE: $23.99-37.99/ pp (pending on group size) ☎️ BOOKING TYPE: Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED?: Yes 📖 THE STORY Our mission was to find the alias of a missing agent and bring down the syndicate responsible for his disappearance. Our clues led us to a casino… 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE Right away this room “screamed” fun. There were various types of casino games placed around the room. It does help a little if you already know the rules of some of the games, but there were clear instructions so outside knowledge was not necessary. The spacious room and nonlinear puzzle designs were great for large teams and/or experienced players who loves a challenge. The story was incorporated within the puzzles and presented a clear ending. From evidence collecting, deductive reasoning, logical thinking, and making the final call on who was the syndicate, we felt like we were real detectives working on a case. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK One puzzle confused us as we were not used to one challenge having multiple solutions. We would’ve loved to see one of the puzzles at its full capacity but unfortunately it malfunctioned that day. It also caused a bit of confusion for us since it felt like a solvable piece. Some casino sounds would be great to add to the atmosphere of the room. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? Love espionage? Sherlock Holmes? Clue? You’ll probably want to give this room a try. Putting clues together piece by piece and ultimately finding “the one” was satisfying. There was a lot to do with just the 2 of us, so if you are just starting out with escape rooms, we suggest a larger group. Have fun and catch the bad guy! 🔎 HINT Aim high. - Breakout Games (Marlborough) - "Do Not Disturb"
LOCATION: Marlborough, Massachusetts, USA Photo above is property of Breakout Games Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 📝 ETR DECODER 🔑 GAME: Do Not Disturb 📅 DATE PLAYED: September 29, 2021 🎬 GENRE: Thriller, Mystery 🧠 DIFFICULTY (Based on 2 ppl): 5.5/10 👥 TOTAL # OF PLAYERS: 2-7 ppl 🕒 LENGTH OF TIME: 60 Mins. 💰 PRICE: $39.99/ pp ☎️ BOOKING TYPE: Private 🔓 ESCAPED/ COMPLETED?: Yes 📖 THE STORY There's been an increase of kidnappings occurring in Breakout City. You and your friends have been tracking the kidnapper and decide to follow them to a motel outside of town. It appears the kidnapper was on to you and has lured you into his deadly game. Are you able to discover what happened to the other victims before you become one yourself? Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE In "Do Not Disturb", the backstory definitely set up the game for us. Walking inside the room, an eeriness followed and something creepy is lurking out of this room. The set was designed to have that run-down motel room look with a twin size bed, a mini-fridge, and an old microwave. Most of the things that you would expect to find in an old dingy room on the outskirts of town. All of a sudden, we seem to have walked into his trap instead. The lighting added a scare factor into the ambience and the change was quite unexpected. The hint system was unique as it utilized the storyline instead of breaking character. Certain puzzles used actual props in the room and we were surprised that we actually had to perform an action and wait for a certain reveal to happen. The ending created a sense of urgency which fit quite nicely with the theme of the game. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Although the set design fit the description of a run-down motel room, there were a couple of things that felt like it needed a bit of touch up. We weren't sure if we were breaking things at one point. Some decor/puzzle were also taken out as it doesn't function in that room anymore but were still visible which became unintentional red herrings. The speaker that were giving backstory was playing throughout the game and at times there were actual important clues but it's not very clear so we had to ask the GM to repeat it several times. One puzzle was confusing as to what they were correlating to and why and when this all happened. Although we've eventually completed it, there was no cluing as to why we should do them at the first place. The alternative ending is a cool concept but it does ultimately lead to same ending which kind of defeated its purpose. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This is a new take on a kidnap type of story as it takes on a different perspective to their other room "kidnapped". There's no relevance to the actual storyline but instead of being kidnapped, you're actually tracking the kidnapper down. If you enjoy anything related to crime solving then you might want to dig deep into this case. There's definitely a sense of urgency throughout the game as the kidnapper could be watching you or making his way back to the motel room. If you find a code, don't be afraid to give it a try on everything you can find! Make the right decision as the wrong one could cost your lives!
