📖 THE STORY

As with any good noir story, Noir begins with a murder. Ed Miller, a private investigator, is hired to look into the suspicious death of a dame's husband. What initially seems like a straightforward case quickly becomes much more complicated as Ed digs deeper and discovers connections to the mob.

Things take a turn when the mob's goons realize someone is investigating the case. Ed manages to draw their attention away, giving your team roughly 60 minutes to finish the investigation, tie up the loose ends, and uncover the crown jewel before his cover is blown.

The clock is ticking, the mob is closing in, and it's up to your team to solve the case before Ed runs out of places to hide.

🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE

The puzzle flow in Noir was outstanding. Not only did the puzzles fit naturally into the theme, but there was also a fantastic variety throughout the experience. Our group had players who preferred analytical puzzles and others who gravitated toward more physical challenges, and the game managed to give everyone something to enjoy. The progression between puzzles was also incredibly smooth, allowing us to work through the experience efficiently and finish with plenty of time to spare without ever feeling rushed.
The decision to make the entire room grayscale was another brilliant design choice. It immediately sells the noir aesthetic and makes the experience feel like you've stepped directly into a classic black-and-white detective film. With all the familiar noir tropes woven throughout the room, it was genuinely fun to feel like we were the detectives piecing together the mystery ourselves.
There were also several secrets hidden throughout Noir that really stood out. Some of them were surprisingly inventive and demonstrated just how much creativity the owners put into the design. Those little discoveries added another layer to the experience and rewarded players who took the time to look a little closer at their surroundings.

🧩 MISSED THE MARK

After careful consideration, there really isn't anything significant to criticize about Noir. The game doesn't do anything outright poorly, and anything I could put in this section would be an extreme nitpick rather than a meaningful critique of the experience.

🏹 TAKE A SHOT?

Noir-themed gumshoe and detective games are surprisingly rare in the escape room industry. When you do find them, they often lean heavily into the traditional idea of a detective's office, with the experience built around searching through desks, filing cabinets, and paperwork. Noir starts with some of those familiar elements, but Escape Alaska takes the theme much further. The decision to make the entire experience grayscale gives the room a distinct visual identity and makes it feel like you've stepped directly into a classic noir film.

For experienced enthusiasts, the puzzles in Noir tend to fall on the easier side. That said, there are significantly more puzzles packed into this experience than in Escape Alaska's The Tomb, so there is almost always something for your group to be working on. For a general public team, that amount of content could actually make this a fairly challenging experience. The easier individual puzzles also help keep the investigation moving without allowing the group to get stuck on one particular challenge for too long.

Solving the actual mystery was one of the most enjoyable parts of the game. Murder mystery rooms can sometimes become overly complicated, requiring players to follow layers upon layers of logic just to figure out what the game wants them to investigate next. Noir avoids much of that frustration. The game naturally gives you the information you need, and the clues are clear enough to help narrow down the investigation without simply handing you the answer. It made the process of solving the case feel satisfying rather than unnecessarily difficult.

In fact, our group finished the game with around 25 minutes remaining (3rd best of all time), and we were genuinely shocked at how quickly we had moved through it. But speed doesn't necessarily equal a lack of fun. We had a great time from beginning to end, and the fact that a group of experienced enthusiasts can move quickly through a game doesn't mean that the experience itself is too easy. In this case, the pacing, variety, and sheer amount of content kept us engaged even though we ultimately blitzed through the room.

Noir is a fun example of how to take a familiar genre and give it a stronger visual identity while keeping the gameplay accessible. It may not be the hardest game for seasoned enthusiasts, but the combination of a unique aesthetic, a satisfying mystery, and a steady stream of puzzles makes it an easy recommendation for anyone looking for a good detective-themed escape room in Anchorage.
