We heard a lot of positive reviews about this room and was very eager to try it. Once again, our game master was in character from the beginning to end. From the surround sound system to the production quality of the maze, this was hands down the best that we've ever seen. When you enter the room, you already have a feeling of entrapment and sometimes actually feel a slight breeze as if someone's following you. It's not scary in the sense of horror but definitely in the sense of suspense. Due to the theme of the room, the lights were pretty much dim throughout. But there were parts that involved strobe lights which affected one of our friend's and she got a little bit dizzy in there. So if you are susceptible to flashing lights, this might not be the room for you. The puzzles didn't feel that challenging to us. However, kids would probably do better in this room since it involves a lot of searching for hidden objects. The only issue we experienced was that music was loud and delayed our game master from acknowledging our request for hints. There was also a delay in triggering one of the high-tech puzzles, but not sure if that was because it's manual or not. We were very close with a completion of 90% of the puzzles. The theme was quite immersive as you actually feel like you are minutes away from a ticking bomb exploding as the clock continues to count down. Although it could be the design they are going for, but some of there locks definitely needed some "refreshing". Having a bigger group would definitely be more advantageous as the room isn't as linear and there are separate puzzles to be worked on. There's no red herrings and the instructions were quite clear. This room is a bit on the dark side, so you'll have to have some what of a good eye sight as it's pretty much the same level of darkness throughout the game. This time we attempted to escape the "Prey" room which was located on the 6th floor (completely separated from the other rooms on the 5th floor). The waiting area was extremely clean w/ a couple of puzzle games available to enjoy. The room itself wasn't what we expected. It felt like it needed an upgrade w/ the decor and the design. The puzzles were somewhat challenging but definitely manageable. We were very close with a completion of 95% of the puzzles. Having one more person would've definitely been more advantageous as the room required a lot of back and forth. There's a few parking spots in the back and street parking in the front. You'll need to climb a few steps to the door. This is our first time attempting one of their escape rooms. The room is well decorated and definitely stuck with the storyline of a magician's work space. We felt that the room was a bit small but it was perfect for two people. A large group may feel a little too claustrophobic and there's only a few puzzles to work on. We enjoyed the ending as it felt like a great conclusion to the storyline. The mixture of high-tech and basic locks were a perfect combination (no pun attended). There aren't too many red herrings in this room, which we liked. The two of us escaped with some time left. The customer service is great as they actually do a personal call to you after you complete the room to ask about your experience and feedback. We'll be back to try another room soon. We decided to try another room of theirs and found this "Underworld" room quite disappointing. We understand this is one of their older and original rooms, but we just didn't expect the level of difference to be this drastic. We did not feel immersed at all in this room. In fact, when you enter you can actually see right through the windows to outside. There were a lot of red herring puzzles in the room that really annoyed us as it wasted a lot of our times and we felt that it was thrown in there because there was really not enough real puzzles to be solved. There was really no storyline at all except to just get out of the room. There were definitely a few props that needed to be replaced due to its worn out state. We did end up getting out with two minutes to spare with just the two of us. Currently this is our official "Red Herring" title holding room. Since we had more people w/ us this time, we decided to book Just Escape's most challenging and very scary room - "Prey". The maximum amount of people for this room is 12 and we had a total of 7 (4 of us and 3 others joining in). The game starts off divided into two groups and you are all held captive handcuffed to something. Communication is definitely going to be very important in this game in order to survive. The decor was mediocre as we felt it needed a bit of an update. The puzzle designs had very little technology incorporated. Also, we were right next door to another escape room and we were able to hear them throughout our game. It kinda took away from our experience which didn't have us fully immersed. As a precaution, this room is for ages 17+ and they don't recommend it if you are pregnant, have heart or lung conditions, or are in general poor health. There's no elevator at this particular location (Hempstead). You will have to climb up 2 flights of stairs. They have two parking lots available for their customers. The waiting area has a bunch of chairs but not much decor. There's definitely a scare factor incorporated into the "Killer Feature PG-13" room's design and sound effects. Please note that this is a dark room and you will start the room handcuffed and blindfolded.  The beginning was definitely more difficult with two people so I think four would be ideal for this room. There's definitely a few red herrings in there so try to concentrate on the storyline which they definitely follow until the end. There was one piece of equipment in the room that we had difficulty with as it wasn't very clear on how to operate it. Overall, we did enjoy our first scary room. This time it seems like we’ve committed a crime as we are put into jail cells but can’t remember what we’ve done. We have to escape before the authorities comes back! The set design for the “Disorderly Conduct” room definitely felt more immersive than the previous room we’ve played. You felt like you were locked up in a police station and need to find a way to get out. Right away, we were put into separate jail cells and had to work together as a team to escape out of there. We’ve played a few rooms like this and have known by now how to strategize in this case. It may help for players to scan the room quickly and find the objective. In this case we found that having the taller person in the right cell made it easier for us. The puzzles were thought out as if we were actually in that situation and what would a prisoner need to do in order to break out of the cell. We enjoyed having our mindset turned into a character in the theme of the story. This room’s objective and storyline flowed better, and the clues ultimately led us to finding our escape route. We successfully escaped with some time left on the clock. Currently, there are two other rooms at this location, and they are called “The Pazziolis”. There are two rooms which resembles a Mafia family feud storyline and each team should have a minimum of 4. The two rooms combined can accommodate up to 16 players so it would definitely be a fun party/team building experience. The owners also showed us what they are working on and it looks pretty amazing. Read our review of the “Killer Feature PG-13" room to find out more about our experience at Epic Escape Room LI. They currently have two locations with one being in Brooklyn, NY. The owners have informed us that the Brooklyn location will likely close soon and maybe one of the games will be moved over to the LI location. So if you haven’t gotten the chance to play there yet, this is the time! There is a parking lot behind this location and on the streets but regardless you’ll have to enter from the front. Note that there are steps to walk up as they are located on the second floor. Today, we are trying out two of their rooms and the first one is called “Vanished”. It seems like the amazing magician Balthazar has vanished and now we have to go through his belongings to find out what happened to him. As we entered the room, it felt like there was a lot to do and there was! The puzzles are not all linear so if you had a group in here, you can have some people searching and some solving puzzles. The escape room owners do build all of their rooms in-house and we can’t really compare it to some production rooms we’ve seen with the higher budget range, so it wasn’t as immersive in terms of the set design. Also, since this is an older room, some items do seem like they are worn out and could use some upgrades so that they can be fully functional. It would be great if it could be intertwined with the storyline of the “vanishing” magician as we didn’t get a concluded ending of what had really happened to him. However, we did enjoy all the puzzles as they were all different in their own ways so if you are a puzzle and lock lover, this is the room for you. We’ve escaped the room with just the two of us with plenty of time to spare. Next, we are excited to try out their newest room called “Disorderly Conduct”. The owners are a very talented escape room enthusiasts couple who’s been on the set of the "SAW" franchise production and some of the "Cirque Du Soleil" acts. They are now utilizing their many years in the restaurant business to create this kitchen horror-themed escape room. We arrived at what looked like an apt complex entrance and were led down to the basement. There’s not much of a lobby but the set up is quite interesting. To the left side you have a music school where one of the talented owners still teaches her students and to the right you have the newly built escape room - "The Real Kitchen Nightmare". You really couldn’t sense much of the theme when you are out in the lobby area but once you enter into the waiting area, you’re transported to a different world. The storyline combined with the authentic acting intro tells a daunting story about an angry chef. The props are as REAL as it can get. We definitely got a little “challenge” from one puzzle in there due to how authentic it was. You are in a real kitchen and the clues were all relevant to its theme. The only issue we had at the time of beta testing was that there were too many props and it could be a bit overwhelming to detect what is to be used and what is just for decor. Perhaps that’s why their escape room rate is still at 0% at this point. We think with less props or more identifiable, the flow of the puzzles will be a lot clearer. We went with just the two of us and there was a lot to do. Being enthusiasts themselves, they have seen a lot of what’s out there and “easy” is definitely not what they want to go for here. With a larger group, this room is definitely doable as there’s a lot of puzzles you can solve simultaneously.  The set design was amazing from beginning to end. We liked how as the story developed, the lighting and sound went along really well from room to room. Although there’s not a real live actor in the room, the theme felt so eerie and the layout of the room was very intricately designed that you can “jump” scare yourself from time to time. We wonder if the use of smell could be incorporated to make it feel even more “kitchen-ish”. All in all, this was an amazing experience. We think that by tweaking the puzzle flow and unnecessary prop usage, it deserves a spot on our top-rated room list. You can easily get there by using any of the subway lines (2,3,4,5, B, D, N, Q, R) to the Atlantic Avenue stop. It may be hard to find parking on weekdays, but weekends should be easier. As we entered the lobby, we see the iconic “keyhole” doorway right away. Don’t be fooled by the size of the lobby as there’s plenty of room in the back. They have a huge space for parties, so it’ll be perfect for private events. Currently they have three rooms running (“Shelter R”, “The Haunted” and “Medieval Dungeon”). Be sure to call them to check on the availability of the games as they are currently they are under renovations. Today, we’re trying their newest room “The Haunted” with just the two of us. This game is appropriate for children ages 8 and up and anyone under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. There are no live actors in the room for anyone who is concerned about the scare level. As we entered the haunted house, we immediately felt a chill down our spine with the immersive set design. You can feel the age of the house and even the scent of “dust”. We were welcomed by our “gamemaster” with a little prequel and then our game began. The dim light did make everything harder in terms of searching and finding the clues. The puzzles were cleverly used to reveal segments of the story as time passed. We enjoyed some “wow” moments. At certain times, there are things we anticipated but gave a surprising turn, in a good way. The puzzles weren’t particularly challenging and we did complete them with ample time left. It would be great to see if a more difficult version could become optional for enthusiasts. The ending could be a bit more impactful as it felt a little empty with the space utilization. Overall, we really enjoyed the clear direction of the storyline and escaping out of the eerie house. According to the owner, they will be installing a new room very soon. We can’t wait to return to check out their other games and hopefully have time for some famous Brooklyn pizza after! The first room that we are scheduled to play is "The Heist Part 1". According to their website, this is the most difficult room that they have. We were fortunate enough to meet with the owner & developer to learn more about the company. The Puzzle Parlour is a franchise organization that originated from Missouri. They have three locations total - 2 in Missouri and 1 in New York. There's a huge parking lot right next to the entrance and street parking in front. You can download the app - ParkWhitePlains and refill your meter without having to walk over. The lobby decor is quite nice and has a couple of games to entertain you while you wait. There's some merchandise available for purchase including t-shirts of all different colors and sizes. Before entering "The Heist Part 1" room, you are debriefed outside by your game master/ getaway driver. He hands you a backpack with some useful objects to help you with your mission. The room design was built to feel like a locker room at a police precinct and it definitely did. Some parts of it felt a bit dated, but then again this is Puzzle Parlour's oldest room. The puzzles designs had a continuous flow and the storyline kept us engaged with some character role-playing. Since we managed to escape with some time to spare, we recommend a smaller group for this room. Also, there's a bonus puzzle if you escape with enough time to figure it out. This room seemed a lot easier than "The Heist Part 1" room as we managed to escape with two people and a good amount of time left. We recommend 2-3 people for this room. Overall, it was quite enjoyable from the beginning to end. We shall be back to try their other two rooms - "Surgery" and "Vampire". Read our “The Heist: Part 1” and "Alien Conspiracy" for more information on the location. Today, we came back to save our friend from the “Vampire” in the mysterious Castle Ravenloft. We must get the serum before midnight or else our friend who got bitten will turn into a vampire! All the room sizes have been quite spacious at The Puzzle Parlour but this one felt like the largest one we’ve done there. Our recommended team size is 4-6 pending on experience. We had just the two of us that day and got out with time left on the clock. Right away, we felt like we entered an old castle from centuries ago. The lighting and décor gave that eerie feeling but no worries, there are no jump scares. We especially liked the way the clue system and the timer were designed in this room. It wasn’t a typical tv or counter which earned brownie points towards the immersion. We are not sure how we were able to skip one puzzle, but we did not retrieve one of the objects but was still able to finish the game. If this could be avoided somehow it could improve the game flow. We were also stuck on a word puzzle later as the wording seemed a bit confusing, but we were able to solve it using process of elimination. There was one other puzzle towards the end of the game that stumped us and we had to use a clue. But the solution felt like it didn’t have relevance to the storyline. Design-wise, the latter part of the room was on point as well. We liked the “wow” moments it gave us in terms of how different they were. This was our favorite room at The Puzzle Parlour so far and since Halloween is right around the corner, it’s definitely an experience you do not want to miss. We still have one last room “The Surgery” that we haven’t tackled yet. If you have tried that room, let us know your thoughts! Along the way, you'll encounter other goblins to help you rise up again the king! 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE So far, we've only played about a handful of virtual reality escape games. This game stood out for us mainly because we felt like we were physically stimulated by the virtual world we were in. The doorways felt like they were really there and at times we had to really step over them carefully like we would in real life. When we play escape rooms, we love prison-themed games that start us off in separate cells forcing us to communicate in order to escape and in the "Goblin's Quest: The Uprising", they provided this type of play virtually! The CGI was truly amazing and all of the details (goblin's skin, fireballs, jail cell, etc...) all felt so real. We must've spent about 5 minutes just standing there analyzing each other's goblin features. Of course mine was prettier... All of the challenges from beginning to end really completed the package. There were so many fun obstacles that we had to work on as a team mentally and physically. The amount of space really allowed us to explore and since we were playing wirelessly with backpacks on as opposed to being tethered, we moved around quite comfortably. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK In the beginning we started off in separate prison cells. Would've loved to see how we ended up there or even if we were blindfolded and placed in there virtually. Perhaps it's the puzzle lover at heart but it would be great to see more of that aspect being added into the game. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This VR game was so much fun that we completely forget where we were! We felt like were transported into the fantasy world of Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. If you're a fan of VR games and escape rooms, "Goblin's Quest: The Uprising" does a great job at combining both worlds.
