One of the famous members of this society, known as a Secret Sender, invites you to test whether you are worthy enough to be a part of this society. To prove yourself, all you have to do is explore the city, solve all the mysteries, and reveal the identity of this Secret Sender. Can you prove yourself to be a new member of this prestigious secret society? Photos above are property of Mystery City Games 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE This game was absolutely the best way to explore the beautiful city and visit the historical sites in Amsterdam while solving fun puzzles inspired by its history! In some parts, I walked a lot from one spot to another, but I enjoyed it every step of the way! It led me to paths and places that I had never been to. Not only did I enjoy visiting the historical places to solve puzzles, but I also appreciated the vibe of the city and of course the view of the canals! There were five sites that I needed to stop and solve puzzles. Each one had a bench to sit down on or space to read and solve puzzles. I felt comfortable solving puzzles on the street at most places. I love that the puzzles were related to both the history of Amsterdam and the mysterious sender who is a famous figure related to the city. The puzzles might be easy for experts, but they were well-designed to fit both the game and introduce historical facts. I think that they're all approachable and enjoyable for everyone. Though the history part was introductory, it was just the right amount to inspire me and keep me focused on the game. There were so much that I wanted to learn more about after playing the game. I also loved the design of the booklet for the puzzles and it helped keep me immersed into the story of the game. The staff was nice and helpful. They offered me options to use a shoulder bag instead of a backpack to carry the puzzle booklet and box. They also inquired if I needed a phone to receive hints (I used my WhatsApp to communicate with him instead). In addition, they were very kind to suggest to me some other activities I could do during my stay in Amsterdam. I was happily surprised to receive a small prize after I finished the game so that I could take it back home for the memory. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Although the box that I carried wasn't too heavy, I believe that it can be a little bit more portable. Regardless, I loved that I got to opened the box with keys even for the city puzzle hunts! A very minor thing, for one of the puzzles, some people may be able to solve the puzzle without collecting information from the site if they already have the knowledge. It may be good to have an option for those who would like a harder challenge. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? “The Mystery of a Secret Sender” is a great way to explore the city of Amsterdam and get to know its history and people by solving fun puzzles related to its history. I strongly recommend this game to anyone who would like to be immersed in this beautiful city and learn about it while having fun. If you love to solve puzzles and go sightseeing, this is the perfect game for you! Just wear comfortable shoes and clothes because you walk quite a lot. Do not forget to check the weather forecast before you book. I really enjoyed how the secret of the girl and ancient ruins was revealed as the game went on. During the game, I only understood some parts of the story. It was nice that I could watch the video of the entire story after we finished playing. The quality of this game's short fantasy anime was excellent. The design of the set matched with its story well. I liked how they used spaces in the room from the beginning to the end. Most of the puzzles were not too complicated. Because this game depends on its story, there were more puzzles related to the order of the story. The next puzzle was guided by the light in the room. Some hints and stories were also shown on the electronic bulletin board. It was helpful and easy to understand what to do next. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK There were dialogues between the characters at several points. Although I enjoyed it, some might feel lengthy and interrupting the game flow. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? “ Fantasy Adventure in the Starry Ruins ” was a fun narrative-based escape room. I felt greatly immersed in the atmosphere because its story and the characters were attractive. This game is great for a fun time with friends and family. A few years ago, a tragedy of unknown origin befell the original owner and his GM. They were found dead, with little evidence to suggest a cause of death or culprit. To this day, the case remains unsolved. Masterpiece Escapes knew their neighbor Felix well, and always held him in high regard. In order to honor their friends’ legacy, they have taken over the building and rights to their escape rooms, You will be playing one of Ghastly’s first rooms, about The Bagman - the precursor to the boogey man. Legend has it that he was a scarecrow who stalked carnival goers, taking people’s souls and imprisoning them for eternity. Good luck. You're gonna need it. Alternate story? It was a dark and stormy night in Indian Trail, NC. Krista and I had just finished up a number of wickedly fun and engaging rooms at Masterpiece Escapes. The affable owner Uriah had told us a bit about the sad history of their neighbor Felix and Ghastly Escapes, lamenting the fact that the once-legendary escape room was now defunct following the tragic, unsolved death of Felix and his general manager. We thanked Uriah for his hospitality and watched through the heavy rains of Tropical Storm Helene as he drove off into the night. Our Lyft promptly canceled on us, and the next driver wasn't due for an hour. We looked across the road to a pizza joint, only to see the Open sign wink off, mocking our plight. Searching desperately for refuge, we noticed the door to Ghastly was ajar, so we decided to take shelter from the storm and take a peek around the set to see if we could get a taste of the adventure that once enthralled escape artists such as ourselves. To our surprise, the lights inside were still (more or less) operational. As we stood dripping in their flickering glow, we were greeted by a most unexpected "Who's there?" From around a corner came a young woman with round glasses. In a shaky voice, she said her name was Skye, and that she had been a key member of Felix's team. Upset about the rumors that still swirled about Felix' untimely demise, she spent her evenings searching the building for evidence that would restore his reputation. Our unannounced arrival had given her quite a fright, but she quickly composed herself and began regaling us with tales of the heyday of Ghastly Escapes. As we chatted, we heard the sudden bang of the front door slamming shut, followed by the lights abruptly going out. We scrambled to find a place to hide as we heard Skye scream, followed by the sound of something being dragged away. We waited for a breathless minute, until once again all was silent. We steeled ourselves against the terror that enveloped us and vowed we would not leave Skye in the clutches of whatever evil had come to life. We searched the maze-like interior of the abandoned warehouse until we finally found her, locked up with a bag over her head - scared but fortunately unharmed. The three of us could barely contain our panic as we moved through…well, I was in such a state that it is nigh-impossible to recall all that we saw and experienced. I do remember we uncovered a variety of clues about the origins of the Bagman, who we now suspect was the true murderer. Working together, we did our best to avoid the Bagman's clutches as we exhausted our wits and used every last ounce of our courage searching for a way to escape this ghastly nightmare, without becoming victims ourselves. Video above is property of Masterpiece Escapes 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE This is a fabulous experience for anybody who enjoys role play, haunted houses, and immersive horror. There is plenty of room within the story for improvisation by both participants and performers! Also, clear instructions are provided ahead of time as to the nature of the experience and what is and isn't acceptable. Participants are able to choose the level of interaction with which they are comfortable, so you can know you are safe while you are being scared to death! It is a mix of dramatic horror and puzzle solving. The soundtrack alternates between mysterious and foreboding, helping delineate when it is time to think, and when it is time to panic. The sets are marvelously creepy and diverse, with hiding places that provide scant hope of remaining unseen, fun activities to complete, and nowhere to run when things get dicey. The space is large and varied enough that it can support a much larger multi-part story, all set in the same universe, with varying types and levels of horror, interaction, and mood. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK It is difficult to find any fault with this experience. The presentation of one clue was a bit ham-fisted, but truly this is an unimpeachable way to spend an hour testing your wisdom, wits, and wherewithal. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? No joke, this isn't for the faint of heart. It is more interactive than most haunted houses we've done, and the time domain is longer, too. The level of fear is well modulated, providing some less-heartpounding times to work on the puzzle aspects, but when it gets intense, hold on to… whatever you can find! This will be a fantastic experience for anyone who loves a good haunt and is willing to play along - we highly recommend checking your rational self at the door and letting yourselves be swept away by this unforgettable experience. It's far more than just a bunch of puzzles to solve - it's your chance to be front and center in a horror movie and see if you have what it takes to outwit the evil that lurks within Ghastly Escapes. ℹ️ ADDITIONAL INFO Masterpiece Escapes has free parking right in front of their location. There is a good-sized lobby with drinks available for purchase. They have bathrooms available and bins in each room to store any belongings. You will need to walk briefly outside after checking in to get to this experience. After checking out the contents of the box, the introduction letter pointed us to a website to begin an audio play. At certain points of the audio play, Loveday Brooke would find clues and mark them as evidence X. We would then open the envelope marked with the same evidence X and get to examine it as well. The evidence that was provided was of high quality and the handwritten items were done in the time period with cursive. Do not worry though if you are not familiar with cursive because the website had a guide to help read cursive among other fun things like cocktail and mocktail recipes and a guide on playing with children. The highlight by far is the audio play. The voice actors, production value, music, everything was incredible and professionally done. They also offered a transcript of the play which we found useful to follow along which also offered some stage directions for the story that added an extra layer to the play. We personally are not familiar with this Loveday story, but researching it afterwards, we are all so impressed with first, how they were able to turn it into an audio play but secondly, how they were able to weave a larger mystery in it to allow us to play along. If you know the story as well, it won’t spoil the game for you either. By the time we got to the last envelope, we were instructed in the introduction letter to pause the play and see what conclusions we could put together. The evidence was well thought out and everything had a purpose. We had to make sure to read everything but it all made sense and gave us a satisfying solve. Once we made our conclusion, we could continue the audio play and Loveday would give us her conclusion. Afterwards, there was also an envelope that explained in more detail what connections were made and where to find the key pieces in the items. The audio play was beyond compare with its production value through the voice acting, music and script. They even provided a beautifully smelling candle and tea to set the mood for a casual environment to play this game, gathered around the living room or something. This made me think of times sitting on the living room floor on a rainy day, listening to a story on an old radio. The game says it can be played with up to 6 people, which we find is do able as you can easily pause the audio play and allow everyone time to check out the evidence. Any armchair detective or theatre buffs would love this experience. This is a game that everyone needs to check out and we can’t wait to see what other detective stories LAS has in store. It is great to see how all these companies support one another. The experience begins in the reception area, the guard meets you and instructs you on how to enter the prison. This is one of the few games of such a theme where you don’t begin the game already locked up. The ‘checking-in’ part was well done and an immersive beginning. The layout, design, and construction of the prison was extremely well done and obviously carefully planned. We don’t want to provide spoilers, but suffice to say you’ll explore some pretty cool themed rooms that you don’t normally see in such games of this genre. In addition to the aesthetics of the game, which are top draw, thought was also applied to the other senses too, in particular the smells. A small detail, but one that again promotes a deeper sense of immersion. The puzzles all made thematic sense to the story arch and the setting. We had fun completing them and that they often required full teamwork. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK It’s hard to really pinpoint anything which we feel the designers missed. They have been very efficient with the space and careful to ensure the puzzles are suitable to players of all levels of experience. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This is both a welcoming game for newer teams as well as an immersive experience for those teams who are well versed with escape rooms. The attention to detail, relating the décor to the characters and theme is the best I have encountered. The rooms within the game are designed to follow the original story arch and play out the most memorable scenes, such as those in the classroom, banking hall, and vault. The puzzles are nonlinear meaning teams can decide to complete them together or to separate and solve them simultaneously. We found the puzzles to be thematic and contain a good level of variety, drawing on observation, deduction, and a little dexterity. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK We would have appreciated some more complexity to the puzzles. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? Fans of the show will no doubt appreciate how well made this game is and will enjoy reliving key moments from the show. We are led into a dark room and asked to watch a video detailing the story. As the story ends another set of doors opens and the game begins! Entering into the actual game area was jaw dropping, the size and quality of what they have built is staggering. There is a full two-story house built inside this old Martini factory. The interior of the house is built with the highest details in mind, you would genuinely believe you were in some old American home from the 1940’s or such. There are multiple rooms, secret areas, and special effects that will keep you on your toes throughout. The puzzles make use of the whole house and force teams to constantly move around, exploring, gathering data, and remembering what they have found. Using tools and information at different times and locations will be a common trend, as is the need to work as a team. This is a very engaging and interactive game. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK The only thing we could have asked for more of is immersion into the sinister world of Jason. We were never really scared or on edge during our time in the house, so finding a way to up the tension would really take this room to the next level. It was a shame that Jason never made an appearance himself. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? We regard this room to be one of the hottest new rooms in the Netherlands and suggest everyone try it. There is nothing too scary to detract people from giving this a try. We always try to have some banter with any actors we meet in our escape adventures, and here was no different. The scale of the prison complex is impressive and much larger than we had expected. We transitioned through numerous rooms during our escape which were all built to a high level of authenticity, using thematically correct props. There is one particular special effect that gave us a genuine ‘wow’ moment and we were thankful to our GM who gave us a tour of the complex after our game to show us how it all worked. We love rooms that encourage teams to explore, work together and revisit all areas, and this room did just that. Throughout the game we moved back and forth through the spaces and had to work as a complete team to finish certain things. Overall the puzzles worked well with the theme and made use of technology and objects that you would expect to find in a prison, such as CCTV, drainage systems, personal belongings, computer systems, and more. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK This is a very professionally made prison escape experience and one of the best our team have played. The only hole in the story was the question mark over why a guard would disappear in the middle of an execution, and why the whole prison suddenly becomes deserted? 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? For fans of prison escapes, " The Execution " is a must try room. If not, then you should still give it a try! You go in with the Chadwick family to see if their daughter has really been there all this time, be careful... no one knows what you will find there. 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE We were really impressed with the scale of the room. We were not expecting it to be so expansive from the outside. The design and construction is very close to representing a real home, so immediately you can begin to feel the immersion. Towards the end of the game there is a plot twist that shocked us in a really good way, leading to a genuine ‘wow’ moment. We enjoyed the cooperative nature of many of the puzzles. Having puzzles which require two or more team members to complete is always something we appreciate in games. The puzzles occasionally also had us moving back and forth through the rooms, which is another feature we enjoy encountering. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Although this is supposed to be a spooky room, we didn’t really feel the tension for the most part of the game. I wouldn’t say our team especially loved horror rooms, but we left craving more jump scares or spooky/scary moments. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? Being captured and sent into a barren chamber felt incredibly realistic, ramping up the tension to the point where I wondered if the kidnapping was actually for real. The atmosphere, from the dark, dreary room to the eerie sounds, added to the immersive experience. One standout feature was the variable difficulty adjustment. You could choose to play the room at a harder level if you were up for a challenge. As experienced enthusiasts, we opted for the more difficult setting and had a blast, but for newcomers, sticking to the normal difficulty might be best due to the complexity of the puzzles. The game master did an excellent job of playing her role, enhancing our immersion into the storyline. Her commitment to her character added an extra layer of realism, making us feel like we were truly part of the unfolding narrative. This level of dedication from the game master significantly contributed to our overall enjoyment of the experience.. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK A minor drawback of the game was that some of the props and interactive elements felt somewhat old and overused. While this did contribute to the overall atmosphere, it occasionally slowed us down as we tried to decipher certain elements. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? There was so many unexpected twists in this story that we literally could not predict the ending! Every bit of this game felt like a masterpiece (no pun intended) and that's why they won a "Best Overall" Bullseye Award! The set design was cleverly constructed throughout the entire game. Without giving away any spoilers, Masterpiece Escapes got extremely creative with the material that they decided to use. In the junkyard section, there was flashes of lightning in the ceiling which was covered by clouds creating the effect of the storm brewing. The others, you'll have to play in order to find out... " Wrecked " had a really nice game-flow and all of the puzzles were cleverly designed to enhance the experience! Some puzzles in this room were linear and some were not. This really allowed us to divide and conquer but also come together as a team. There was a wide variety of puzzle challenges - physical, cooperative, logical, etc. The ending was incredible and totally unexpected! Just when you thought you were done...Hence, why it would make a great movie! 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Absolutely nothing. We enjoyed the entire experience and didn't want it to end! 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This means that you have accepted the coin and have been tricked into joining King George’s navy. Taken to your new ship, you realize that the shilling is actually made of wood, not silver meaning your conscription is invalid. Can you prove it to Captain Wolfe before the H.M.S. Growl sets sail? 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The décor and set design of the room was simple but effective. It gave the feel of a ship and captain quarters to draw us into the game. There were also no red herring props, which pushed us to know exactly what we should be working with. There was a different type of hint system in place where each room had small booklets for each puzzle in the corner, like an at home escape game. This allowed us control of our own hints. There were also a couple of times when a few of us were working on different puzzles, and we weren’t sure which one of us triggered something, allowing us an easy way to confirm who was responsible for it. The puzzles were all solid and well thought out and even for us veteran players, provided some nice eureka moments. We enjoyed the story, which gave us a mini history lesson and something for us to talk about on the ride out. This might seem minor but for an area that could get quite warm, it was nice to have control of the AC in the room. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK This was a fantastic room that was well designed and put together with no misses. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? " The King’s Shilling " was the perfect activity to get out of the sun and do as a family. Overall, it was top notch and was a beginner/family friendly room. The puzzles flowed well with very little misdirection and provided us with some fantastic eureka moments. Though simple, the set design was effective in immersing us into the story. One tip is make sure you look everywhere for what you need or what gets triggered. Anyone interested in a little Maritimes history, fun puzzles or an approachable escape room should play this room. We played with 6 people and found that the room fit us all but with the linear puzzle flow, did have some of us standing around a lot. 4 people would be the best fit to allow everyone participating.
