🎭 THE EXPERIENCE
The Conover Killings is a highly immersive, story-driven outdoor horror experience hidden deep within the woods of Conover's Christmas Tree Farm in Wall Township, New Jersey. Inspired by the legend of Jonathan and the infamous Mill Massacre, the trail plunges visitors into a nightmare where the line between story and reality quickly disappears.
The fear begins before you even enter the woods. A long, dark gravel road leads guests to the secluded farm, where they gather around a bonfire and hear the chilling events that set the nightmare in motion.
Once on the trail, the darkness takes over. Twisting woodland paths, live actors, and unexpected encounters create a constant sense of dread. Jonathan and other sinister figures can appear from anywhere, turning every shadow into a potential threat.
Groups are intentionally spaced apart, leaving visitors without the comfort of a crowd. With only the darkness, the woods, and whatever may be lurking ahead, each journey becomes a personal fight to make it out before the next victim is claimed.

📖 THE STORY
Thirteen years ago, Jonathan invited his closest friends to what was supposed to be their annual Halloween gathering. As night fell, something changed. The laughter stopped. The screams began. One by one, his friends vanished into the darkness.
When dawn finally broke, the property had become a crime scene. Bodies were discovered scattered throughout the woods, and the massacre shocked the entire community. The gruesome event would forever be remembered as The Conover Killings.
But Jonathan was never found. Some say he died in the woods. Others believe he never left.
On quiet nights, strange sounds echo through the trees. Unexplained sightings continue to surface. And those who venture too deep into the darkness often leave with the same unsettling feeling:
Someone or something is watching. Waiting. And it hasn't forgotten what happened that night...

🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE
Storyline: One of The Conover Killings' greatest strengths is the unsettling mystery at the heart of its story. The narrative never reveals what drove Jonathan to lure his closest friends into the woods or why he chose to slaughter them. By withholding any clear motive, the attraction transforms Jonathan from a simple killer into something far more disturbing: an unknowable presence whose actions defy explanation. The restless spirits of his victims, encountered throughout the trail, serve as chilling reminders of the massacre that unfolded there years ago. Their appearances feel less like ghostly encounters and more like fragments of a tragedy trapped in time, forever replaying in the darkness. Together, they create the lingering impression that something is deeply wrong within these woods, and that whatever happened on that fateful night never truly ended.
Immersion: One of the strongest aspects of the experience was the build-up. As we disappeared into the darkness of the woods, an immersive audio narrative unfolded around us, slowly escalating the suspense and creating the constant feeling that something was waiting just beyond the trees. The introduction set the tone perfectly, and the tension only intensified as we ventured deeper into the pitch-black woods. We loved how the attraction focused on building suspense before the scares.
Atmosphere: The experience begins the moment you leave the main road and make your way down a long, unlit gravel driveway that immediately sets an uneasy tone. After you park and check in, your group can gather around a fire pit as you wait to be called. The Conover Killings makes excellent use of its sprawling property, leading visitors down an increasingly isolated woodland path where the darkness seems to grow deeper with every step. By the time you reach the trail entrance, the attraction has already immersed you in its atmosphere of suspense and dread. We were also impressed by the attraction's use of technology. Guests who opted into the flashing-light effects received a small sensor that automatically triggered the experience's lighting cues at key moments, seamlessly enhancing the immersion.
Actors: The actors remained fully committed to their characters, using their energy and sharp, often unsettling humor to create interactions that were both entertaining and unnerving.
Psychological elements: The trail was exceptionally dark, with only sparse amber lights marking the path. As the lights became fewer and farther between, the darkness began to play tricks on our senses, leaving us noticeably disoriented by the end of the experience.
🧩 MISSED THE MARK
Set design: There were several moments where the set pieces appeared perfectly positioned for a scare, creating an expectation that something was about to move, emerge, or reveal itself, only to remain static. While the atmosphere was effective, the attraction could benefit from incorporating more environmental effects, particularly animatronics, motion-triggered elements, or low-lying fog. Given the story's emphasis on restless spirits haunting the woods, introducing subtle supernatural effects would strengthen the illusion that the forest itself is alive. These additions would not only enhance immersion but also create greater suspense by making guests question whether every figure, shadow, or shape in the darkness is truly standing still.
Grand Finale: The ending felt somewhat underwhelming compared to the strong buildup that preceded it. The attraction does an excellent job establishing tension early on, but rather than escalating toward a climactic finale, the intensity gradually tapers off during the final stretch. As a result, the experience lacks the memorable closing scare that many guests may expect after such a suspenseful journey through the woods. Given how heavily the story revolves around Jonathan, a final confrontation or significant encounter with the character would provide a much stronger payoff and bring the narrative full circle. Leaving guests face-to-face with the source of the legend could transform a good ending into a truly unforgettable one.
🏹 TAKE A SHOT?
Since The Conover Killings is a limited-run event with bookings available only through October 30, horror fans should make plans to experience it while they can. It is well worth a visit for fans of immersive, story-driven horror. The experience begins long before the first scare. From the moment your GPS announces, "You have arrived..." you're already part of the story, and with every step deeper into the darkness, the line between legend and reality becomes increasingly blurred. By the time you leave the road behind and disappear down the dark, secluded driveway, the story has already started...
