Even when you think you've solved all of them, there'll still be bonus puzzles waiting for you. The puzzles were quite different than traditional ones that you encounter in an escape room. They were mostly riddles, word play, and visual challenges. It was interesting to see how our brains worked using a different perspective. If you get through to the end, there'll be a prize waiting for you. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Full disclosure, the reset was done incorrectly with our game, so we're not sure how fair this review is going to be. Since the puzzles were linear, it really messed up our game flow. This game is automated and the clues were given on the TV screen. We were unsure what we had done wrong as certain clues that we received were not in line with what we had in our hands. I'm not sure how I feel about the automated clue system in this case as we really needed assistance from the GM in situations like this. I would definitely prefer a GM watching us over the camera as well and giving us more specific hints to the puzzles that we are working on. The TV screen for the clues and hints were placed way too high. It was quite difficult to read as the words were pretty small and it was not comfortable for our necks to be looking up the entire time. Certain props looked like they needed to be updated. There was a huge table in the center of the room which was great for teams to sit down and work on something together. It could also be utilized as a prop for clues. But we didn't find much usage for it which felt wasteful. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? If you love puzzles and don't care much about the set design and immersion, then this is your type of room. To us, it felt more like a puzzle hunt rather than an escape room. Observation is a necessary skill that you'll need it in this game. With some tweaks in the "Miss The Mark" section, this room could definitely be used for corporate or team building events. I would probably market this as a puzzle adventure instead and definitely incorporate live game masters to host the games. With tons of board games and toys at this location, you can easily spend a good amount of time at "The Wizard's Chest" and find the "right wand" for yourself! Our very first room in The First State is "The Lost Tomb" at Escape Rehoboth. We decided to make the 3.5 hour drive to Rehoboth Beach and work our way back. As soon as we arrived at Escape Rehoboth, we were greeted with smiles and hospitality. We were fortunate enough to meet with the owners to learn more about the location. Their location is very close to the beach and they currently have four rooms available. There is a plenty of parking right in front of this facility. On the website, they specify that "The Lost Tomb" room is not wheelchair accessible and not suitable for players with epilepsy. The room design was amazing and definitely well constructed. The puzzles stayed true to the storyline and the kept the gameplay interesting. One of the unique things about "The Lost Tomb" was that we had to figure out a way to get inside the room (the tomb) in order to find something and get out. We managed to escape with two people. However, one of the puzzles was a bit harder to see because of the dim lighting, so it took us a while to figure that out. We wish that Escape Rehoboth was closer to us so that we could try their other games! Either way... we shall return! As soon as we arrived, there was plenty of parking right outside the facility. The lobby area was quite spacious and the decor was extremely vibrant (it reminded me of the Joker's hideout). The room design was cleverly constructed with a good mix of technological and traditional puzzles. The storyline was definitely entertaining and kept us engaged the whole time. Our game master was great and extremely helpful. With one of the puzzles we managed to bypass a step and take the easier route. It would be great if they could somehow prevent that from happening so that the player can get the full experience. BREAKOUT and Novus is the first characters based real escape room game operator in the world which offers the combination of escape games with characters role-playing strategies. Each escape theme room is designed to have its own storyline, mindboggling puzzle, tasks, and stratagems that have to be completed within 45 – 60 minutes. The room that we are scheduled to play today is "Dreadnought". As we arrived, there was plenty of parking spaces available. The lobby decor was nice and showcased framed artwork of all the rooms at their location. Our room wasn't reset in time for our game which delayed the start time even though there was no one before us was no one before us. Although they utilized the space of the room design quite well, the decor was mediocre. As we were supposed to be on a ship, we didn't feel quite as immersed into the storyline as we could have. For the most part, the experience was entertaining up until the end. We didn't really feel like there was an ending to the story. Also, one of the "devices" that we found was defected and we needed the game master to come in and try to fix it. Although they paused our time, the device was unable to be fixed and they just handed us the key. We managed to escape with some time to spare but didn't feel like we got the full complete ending. Hilo rains a lot and we experienced that first hand when we got off the cruise ship. This island makes a great escape room location for an indoor activity. Escape Hilo is located on the second floor of a building complex built in 1912. Inside the complex, there are quite a few selection of stores and restaurants providing plenty to do. The complex also has plenty of parking. It may be hard to find "Escape Hilo”, but follow the sign and keep walking left all the way down until the end of the building (you will have to go down half a flight of stairs in the middle section). It'll be the last door to your right at the end of the hallway. We were grateful to have met the developer and owner of the location and at age 23, he's probably the youngest owner we have out of all the escape room locations yet to date. The lobby was very cozy and serves complimentary local drinks to the players. We can tell that he has a great passion for the island and escape rooms and how it was all incorporated in this first room. The room that we are attempting to escape today is called "Plantation Escape". Right from the start, we felt transported to a Japanese immigrant's home. There were many plantations then on the island and this one so happens to be built over an ancient Hawaiian “menehune" wall. We won't divulge into any of the surprises that we've seen as the story developed, but we were pleasantly surprised at the turnover of events. He cleverly used many island-inspired puzzles in his escape room theme. The puzzles weren’t all linear, so you can get a group in there and divide and conquer in different areas although we suggest probably 4 people would be a perfect size. There's a puzzle in there that you could get stuck on if you don’t have prior knowledge of a certain skill, but the game master will definitely help out if you have any issues with that one. Overall, we really enjoyed the game as the puzzle flow went well with the storyline until the end. We hope that if you are ever in Hilo, definitely give them a try and we also hope to return to try out his new rooms in the future! They are located in a building complex and the entrance is all the way to the left. The parking lot is to the right of the building. The escape room is on the 2nd floor with easy elevator access. The elevator opens up to their location as they have the full 2nd floor. The waiting area is very cute with a huge chalkboard for you to represent who you are and where you’re from (which we naturally did). There are also puzzles and games to keep you occupied while you are waiting. Currently, they have five escape room games at this location. We tried their "Prohibition Era Bar" game which sets the tone in an illegal bar during 1924's Prohibition Era. The storyline is that Al Capone came in the bar and shot a guy out of revenge and cops came after to raid the bar but you hid in the bathroom so you wouldn't get caught inside of the illegal bar. The good news is that you didn't get caught, bad news is you are locked inside the bar and now have to find a way to escape before the cops return! As the game starts, you feel like you've entered into a different era and the bar setting with bar supplies definitely adds to the surreal effect. For escape room enthusiasts, we felt the room was quite clear and easy to follow in terms of the puzzle designs and we were able to escape with two people with plenty of time to spare. For beginners, it could be challenging as there are some aspects of the puzzles that perhaps you would need some hints to get you going. Overall, we had a great time in this room and hopefully we will be able to try their NJ location one day as well! They are located in the Nimitz complex. The best way to get to the escape room is by going all the way to the end of the parking area, there's a ramp that goes up to the second floor. Go up the ramp and drive down until you see an area that you can turn left into, the escape room will be located to your right. There's plenty of parking up there. The lobby is cozy as they don't have much space but have a total of three rooms currently with a fourth one in the works. The owner builds everything in house and we were very excited to try this "Stranger Things" TV show inspired room theme - "A Strange Case". The story starts in a little town in the 1980s where strange cases of children beginning to vanish starts and as investigators we were sent by a mother of the last missing child to discover if we can find anything in his house for clues. There was a lot of puzzles that was cleverly designed that stuck with the 1980s times frame. I have to say, there were definitely some items in there that I was too young to remember but at least my "old" husband was able to recognize. Our rating on the puzzle difficulty level was based on 2 people as this room definitely have a lot to do and we would recommend a total of 4. Having someone with 1980s knowledge would also make the room a bit easier but without it it's definitely doable. There were definitely a few design aspects we really liked that we don't want to give it away and they were able to use the space of the room very well. Not much red herrings as pretty much what you see had to be utilized. We liked how they stuck to the storyline till the end. They are located above a "bookstore" in Kaka'ako. There are stairs to take to the second level on the outside. Once you get upstairs, there's two sets of doors and they are the set of black doors to the right which has a little doorbell button that will have VR on it. Ring the bell and the adventure will begin! Currently, they have just the one VR escape game called "Space, Magic, & Time" which was all developed in-house. Their goal is to make many VR escape games for physical escape room locations to add on as a supplement to their escape room choices. Since this is our second VR experience, we felt kind of hooked! They currently have 8 spaces but the max the design of the game currently is for 4 people to play together although they can run two games simultaneously. Each player gets their own VR box so there won't be any bumping into each other situation. Currently their VR headsets are connected to a wire but they will be wireless soon as the wire does tangle as you move around in the game but we didn't find untangling it much of a bother in our game. "Space, Magic, & Time" starts out in a mission control center where you'll be given your first assignment. Each assignment gets harder as it progresses. There's a good mixture of puzzle solving and physical aspects to the game. At one point, we felt like we were actually shooting a real bow and arrow as there was tension felt every time we pulled back. We didn't feel any motion sickness although if you have a fear of height, I think you can definitely practice conquering that in the VR world first. As we get introduced to the VR more now, we can definitely see a trend of where escape rooms might head to next, not replacing but definitely an add on, to the physical escape rooms. "Kauai Escape" is once again the only escape game on the whole island. When you get to the front of the store, do not park in the front. They have a large parking lot in the back of their building. The lobby is a small waiting area but very cozy and colorful. We felt a sense of an "island welcome" right away. While waiting, there are plenty of merchandize for you to select from. The Tiki chocolate bars are a must try! Once all settled, we were bought into an archaeological site for debriefing. Right away we felt as if we became explorers in an Indiana Jones movie. Putting our exploration thinking caps on, we began to search and discover around the dig site. There were a lot of surprising elements throughout the game which we will not spoil here but definitely encountered a few puzzles we've never seen before and "tools" we had to use that was very surprising to us as well. As we "dug deeper" into the game, there were many other surprises that were revealed to us, especially from a set design aspect. The storyline was designed well with the ultimate goal and they sticked with their theme till the end. This room was quite challenging for two people as there are a lot of puzzles to tackle and we were puzzled by one of the clues given by the game master and that wasted a good amount of time so unfortunately we were very close to the finish line but didn't escape in time. We would say a group of 4 would be perfect for this game. The owners are a lovely couple who build these games in house. One is the brains for all the puzzle designs and the other a software engineer in charge of making the dream come true. We left with a big smile and a full stomach as we've visited their suggestions to the freshest Ahi Tuna Poke on the island ("Koloa Fish Market"), most flavorful coffee spot with 20+ free coffee samples to try ("Kauai Coffee Company") and last but not least the best shaved ice on the island ("The Fresh Shave")! We will definitely be back to try their other rooms and what more this island has to offer! Submerged Maui is uniquely located in the Wailea Beach Resort - Marriott. The drive to the escape room had us enter into this little hidden oasis of Wailea accompanied by beautiful golf courses. As we pull up to the hotel, the beautiful open air lobby got our attention right away. Valet is complimentary if you are here to play Submerged and they will validate it for you. The hotel also has other vendors like souvenir shops, Starbucks, and restaurants. You can definitely relax and spend some time here. You can walk to the beach from the stairs of the hotel in the back. Submerged Maui has a desk just to the left of the valet area. We envied the owner's everyday working condition as we don't mind NOT escaping from here ever. Once we enter the submarine structure, we were debriefed with a video explaining our mission. We were suppose to retrieve the Pele's Stone to complete our mission. As our adventure began in the deep sea, there were numerous exciting puzzles which led to different "effects" that would happen as we completed the puzzles. This definitely felt like a film production quality set design.  The sound, lights, lazers, fog effects all played its part perfectly. The game puzzle pieces used were all well made as well and there was a good mixture of key locks and the puzzles were not difficult as the instruction book was quite clear to follow. We felt that this escape room was meant for players to have fun rather than challenge them with difficult puzzles so that they can't escape. We enjoyed this as it was the story that intrigued us with this well designed room. We were able to escape with time left to spare so whether you come with a small group of experts or a large group of newbies, you'll all be able to enjoy the game. Currently, the owner doesn't have another room in the works but we look forward to trying anything that they will come up with in the near future! Our first escape room location on the island is at "Breakout Waikiki". This new location of "Breakout Waikiki" would be considered prime in real estate terminology. Located right on Kalakaua Ave, there's tons of shopping and things to do. Although parking could be an issue, you can valet park at the "Embassy Suite by Hilton" right across the street from them and they will validate your parking. So you can park there for 4 hours for $6.00. We were grateful that the manager was able to meet with us bright and early at 8:30am for our first game. Since this new location just opened, they are still trying to beta-test and prepare all of their other games for the public. We tried the only game that was available at the time - "Y2K". The storyline featured a computer bug that takes down networks all around the world and we have to reset the system before midnight. We felt that the puzzles were a little weak in terms of the connection with the storyline. At the end, we were confused on what the end goal was since the puzzles within the game didn't have much to do with the storyline. There were some cool design aspects of the room towards the end which we enjoyed. The incorporation of music into the game design was enjoyable especially for the 90's music lover in us. We felt that if the storyline correlated with the puzzles more, this could be a stronger room. We had two people for this room and couldn't finish the last puzzle in time. We suggest 3-4 people is a good amount in order to tackle this room since there are puzzles that could be completed seperately. We also had the privilege to take a sneak peek of their "The Hero" room at the new location. We were very intrigued as that room design looks very immersive and instantly provided that "eerie" feeling even before playing. We heard great things about "Breakout Waikiki" and their room design and puzzles prior to coming to Hawaii and felt that perhaps "Y2K" may not be the best representation of their rooms. However, we would love to try their other games one day when we get to return back to this beautiful island! All of a sudden, during an emergency, you see your chance and squirrel away to the doctors office hoping to escape. It is here that you will be solving puzzles and cracking the codes to find the door key to unlock freedom from the illegal experiments performed upon you and your fellow patients. Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE This room will have your team scrambling and solving puzzles in many nooks and corners of the space provided. Initial thoughts when walking into the first room led us to believe that we were in a large doctors office. Posters of the skeleton, desks and cabinets with locks to keep prying eyes away from everything a morally questionable doctor would have while testing and experimenting all led to the immersion of being in a Russian “hospital”. It was a mad rush to complete everything in this room..and the next room...and the next room. The game kept surprising our team with new areas that were well hidden until we unlocked the proper codes. It kept to its theme and provided a setting that was believable, a place where we could have been trapped ourselves. To keep with the immersion, every fifteen minutes or so (to let us know how much time is left) our radio communicator would announce an update on the emergency evacuation process and how close the doctor is to coming back. This small little detail in the room gives us a greater sense of urgency and increases the need to get out of this metaphorical jail cell. There is a lot to do in the hour while the group is in the doctor's office and with its nonlinear puzzles it would be best to start to divide and conquer. There are puzzles that require teamwork, others that use some intellectual thinking, and some even have you playing games with the very technology that has been tested on you for so long. Most of the puzzles flow in a way so that each step per individual puzzle makes sense and with a little bit of thinking and creativity to solve each. Having a good mix between physical puzzles and logical puzzles was a welcome addition to the game. It will give players of all backgrounds an opportunity to excel in the type they solve the best. This whole space is connected and do not think that a piece of information is not needed, if it looks important, it will most likely be. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK The biggest criticism of the game is the storyline’s interconnectivity with the puzzles that one has to complete. The puzzles that are put into the game are in the world the creators made but we didn’t find out too much more about the reason why “our group” was chosen to be experimented on through their solutions, solving them gave us the keys to the next riddle in the list. (Update from the creators 8/16/21: Patient 57 is the sequel to Room 13. If you did not play that game, it would make sense why some of the context was missing of why you were doing the puzzles in the first place! We wanted the game to work stand-alone, but we also wanted platers of the first game to feel like it was Part 2). 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? The venue is located along the main strip of Waikiki Beach and there are plenty of shops and places to explore. Parking can be a little chaotic but Breakout offers validated parking for 4 hours at the Embassy Suites garage. Accessibility in Patient 57 is not available to all. There are a couple locations where a step up is needed and crawling must be available. Completing this game with three players, we got out with only seconds remaining. There is a lot packed into this game and it was one of the harder (but fair) games I have completed in sometime. If you are in Honolulu and looking for an escape game, you will not be disappointed with the experience given by Breakout Waikiki! Everywhere that you look is picturesque. Our cruise ship had to tender and you want to make sure which side of the island it's docked as this could be either a very short trip or a very long one. Mystery Maui Escape Room is around 10 minutes from the airport but is about a 40 minute drive from where our cruise ship docked on the West side of the island at the Lahaina Pier. We enjoyed the scenic drive and arrived at Mystery Maui bright and early. There's a clear sign for you to turn into into the back parking lot and you'll see a big sign for it. As we entered the second floor, the lobby area is very nicely designed with a beautiful graffiti mural. They also have a very comfortable waiting area with puzzles for their guests. Currently they have two rooms with the third room in the making. We only had time to try one of them and being the foodies that we are, we had to go with "The Ramen Shop". Instantly, we felt very hungry when we entered the room. Other than the smell of the ramen, we felt completely immersed by the room design. The story was that a well known Ramen chef - Masato is missing and we had to find out what happened to him. The storyline was very clear as well as game flow. The room was definitely doable by two people but it's spacious enough for four. There are puzzles that can be tackled simultaneously although you may be able to complete it rather quickly with four people if you have played many escape rooms before. We also took a sneak peek of their other room "Stella Superstar!" which had a complete opposite feel of the bright and happy vibe in the Ramen Shop. This room's set design felt more eerie and "dark" from the beginning. The theme for this room is the superstar Stella invited you to her home for a private performance of her new song but soon you'll discover this is too good to be true. Hmm....I wonder what's going to happen? We can't wait to return to test out that room one day! The owners are super talented and they build all their rooms in-house. The problem though, is that many people have been invited to her house but nobody has seem to have written a review of her song. In fact, no one who has been invited has ever been seen again. Are you going to the performance and if you are, can you make it out to write your review? Video above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE If you are into creepy rooms, this would be a great room for you. There are no jump scares, but a combination of the décor and the music they play really makes for an eerie atmosphere. It was also fun as we went from room-to-room as the music changed to match your discoveries. All the puzzles were very well clued. There was not a lot of tech in this room but we were very impressed with how creative Mystery Maui Escape Room puzzles were, since they required little, to no tech puzzles. A bulk of the puzzles were either large enough for both of us to see or had enough pieces to it that we could both solve it together. Even if there were more people, the puzzles would allow everyone to feel like they are part of the solve. Mystery Maui Escape Room has an inventive way of guiding you through the game with the fairly linear puzzles in the game. They also have a good hint system which is provided through a screen that will display your time and how the GM communicates with you. Our GM was very helpful in giving us a few nudges along the way but also gave us the option at the beginning of how we wanted hints given to us, either when we ask or when it looked like we were falling behind. One thing we enjoyed was as 2 people who are red-green colorblind, there were no color related puzzles, which was also told to us at the beginning of the game. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK This was a fantastic room and fun to play. Nothing sticks out as a miss in this one. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? Mystery Maui Escape Room is run by the lovely and amazing husband and wife, Deron and Kit who love escape rooms and it shows through their rooms. "Stella Superstar" has a lot of simple elements in it, but they use them all so well to create a spooky atmosphere in the game (granted, we do scare easily). We were also very impressed how creative they are with some low to no tech items to create the puzzles. We completed the room with 2 experienced players but felt 4 would be fine in the room. Although the room fits up to 6 people, you would not be able to experience all the puzzles. They are located in the Whalers Village. As we were driving there, we noticed that the area has some really nice golf courses. When you drive into the complex, there's a parking lot for the village. Make sure you give the parking ticket to Maui Escape Room after the game so that they can validate it for your free parking. Whalers Village is a very nice shopping complex with a lot of stores and food selections. Maui Escape Rooms is located on the 3rd floor which you can either access by stairs or elevator. They also have banners everywhere (you can't miss the cute little ape signs)! This is a great location as you can see the beautiful beach head on so definitely plan a day here if you are in Maui. As we entered the lobby, we were greeted by the lovely manager of the location. She informed us that this is a new location for Maui Escape Room and they may take on another location in the mall to expand with more games in the future. Currently, there's a total of 4 games at this location and we tried their most challenging one called "Pirate Ship". The story is that we were captured and have to escape in an hour or else we'll be forced to walk that plank. As we entered the room, we were separated as captives and have to free ourselves first before starting the game. The music and design of the room instantly made us feel like we are on a pirate ship. In some rooms we tend to be way to "cautious" as we have the mentality of not breaking anything for the owners to have to maintain but we did feel that it was necessary to use a little more "force" for the one of the first parts of the puzzle. For escapers who loves to "decode", this is your heaven! We felt the puzzle designs were good for beginner escapees as they were very clearly marked and easy to follow, so don't be intimidated by the level of difficulty. They stuck to the theme of the boat and utilized everything they can think of that's related to what would be on a ship to create the puzzles. We also took a sneak peek at all of their other rooms and they all seem to be well designed to the theme and hopefully we'll be able to return one day to try them out!
