- Lock Paper Scissors - "Envy"
Photo above is property of Lock Paper Scissors Company: Lock Paper Scissors Game: Envy Language: English Country: USA πΊπΈ Type of Game: DIY Escape Kits π¨οΈβ Genre: Mystery Date Played: June 29, 2020 Difficulty (based on 2 players): 4/10 Size of Team: Unlimited Time: Unlimited Price: $29.00 Video above is property of Lock Paper Scissors Lock Paper Scissor currently offers 4 DIY Escape Game Kits: Envy, The Lost Mummy, Rebel Revolt, and Escape Room Z. They also offer a couple of free ones as well on their website. We've tried all of them but decided to focus a review on this game. The concept for all the games were quite similar. The puzzles were not difficult and their main focus was on the story line. There were a lot of graphics which could be printed out as props to be used for an escape party. When you purchase the game, you'll receive a folder with files like game setup, prop printouts, game pieces, etc... Photos above are property of Lock Paper Scissors The level of difficulty for the puzzles felt like they were mainly meant for kids. There were two games that adults could give it a shot: Escape Room Z (mainly because of the Zombie theme) and Envy. Out of the 4 games, "Envy" had the most puzzle and was the "hardest" one out of them. Since we couldn't really invite guests over due to COVID, our review was mainly based on the puzzles and design. For this game we actually did not need to print out any pages and was able to visualize all the puzzles on the computer. The puzzles were formed by several mini ones that ultimately gave us a meta puzzle for the ending story which went well with the murder mystery. It was a fun quick 30 minutes for us. We think the game would've been a lot more entertaining if we were able to host a murder mystery dress up party (since there were props you're able to print out like mustaches, masks, monocles, etc...). If you are considering hosting a party to celebrate after all this craziness is over, this could be a fun event to do with friends and family. (If you do decide to try this game, please remember to let them know that you heard it from"ESCAPETHEROOMers"!) Disclosure: We thank Lock Paper Scissors for providing us with a sample of the game. Although a complimentary experience was generously provided, it does not impact our opinion on the review whatsoever. #CiciCao #AtHomeGames #DigitalGames #PrintNCut #DIY #LockPaperScissors #thriller #adventure #detective #escapekits
- The Panic Room - "The Panic Room", "The Book of Grimm", "The Exorcism of Isabelle"
Videos/ Photos provided by The Panic Room Company: The Panic Room Language: English Country: United Kingdom π¬π§ Type of Game: DIY Escape Kits βπ¨οΈ Date Played: 8/23/2020 Time: Approximately 1-2 Hours Size of Team: Unlimited Price: Print & Play: Β£10.00; Printed & Delivered -(UK ONLY): Β£15 Puzzle Book: Β£15 There are currently 5 games available in the "Print & Play" category. Below are our reviews on 2 of the 5 games. We also reviewed the newest game, "The Exorcism of Isabelle" in their puzzle book series. Similar to their digital games, there's usually an intro video or a conclusion video or both. As stated in our previous reviews on the digital games , we really enjoyed this story presentation format. Game: The Panic Room Genre: Sci-Fi Difficulty (based on 2 players): 8/10 The Story: Our mission was to uncover the conspiracy about the UFO. We needed to find its location and by transmitting a radio message, we might even be able to hijack the alien ship! Once you purchase the game, you'll receive a PDF file that'll give you access to different websites and puzzle pages. We recommend that you print everything out as the clues were embedded on every page and it was quite difficult to keep scrolling up and down to associate them all together. A hint page was also provided. If your phone could scan QR code, it'll make life much easier to open up links. If you like deciphering codes and symbols, you'll really love this game. It was great to be able to see ciphers being created in various ways (video, imagery, symbols). There was an online portal you'll be able to input all the answers once they are discovered from the puzzle pages. The portal felt like an actual dash board of a computer screen with accompanied sound effects. It was quite easy to use to enter the location and activation sequence of the UFO on. There were many multi-step puzzles and a cut out puzzle that stumped us for awhile. The game really tested your ability to associate various clues together and was probably the hardest in terms of puzzle difficult level we've played out of all of Panic Room's games so far. If you like a challenge, definitely give this one a try! Game: The Book of Orion Genre: Fantasy Difficulty (based on 2 players): 7/10 The Story: We found one of Brothers Grimm's journal! He had left coded messages for us and we love to figure out what secrets were hidden behind his fairy tales. I'm a huge fan of all fairy tales. The artwork for this game really caught my attention. I love the colors (although it's definitely a lot of ink usage if you are planning to print them all. We only printed 2 pages out of PDF file) and the different characters being portrayed in the story line. From the big bad wolf to the dwarfs to the frog princess, there were many exciting moments to discover. Unlike the previous game, you'll be getting a bit of a guidance with this game but you'll still need to be able to recognize the clue that brings together the different puzzle pieces. There's a hint page if you get stuck. You'll be able to enter the answer on a website portal. We love the way they design the answer portals as they are always able to relate it closely to the story line. In this case, it felt like we were actually typing onto a page in the story book. Our favorite part was the secret revealed at the end. It added a nice twist to the usual fairy tale happy ending. Game: The Exorcism of Isabelle Genre: Horror Difficulty (based on 2 players): 6.5/10 The Story: Our friend sent us some disturbing documents he found while searching on the history of the house he recently purchased. Previous owners have died mysteriously while digging for information. There seems to be a possessed doll and in order to save our friend, we needed to find out the 9 demon names that's possessing the doll and exercise them forever... We reviewed the online PDF version of this game but you'll actually receive a spiral bounded puzzle book when you purchase the game. The content is meant to look like your friend left you all the clues he found about the house which included hand written notes, drawings, photographs, newspaper clipping etc..You'll also receive a website and an interactive portal where you'll be able to enter the demon names. There's a hint page if you ever get stuck. I had goosebumps before even starting the game. The creepy drawings and old photographs definitely added an eerie vibe to the story line. Every time when we entered a demon's name into the portal, the sound would make me jump. Since the game was not linear, we were able to tackle different puzzles at the same time. This game was a lot easier than the two print and cut games mentioned above. From an immersive stand point, this was definitely our favorite out of the three. We really enjoyed the graphics (simple yet haunting) and the story line that tied everything together. If you are looking for a puzzle to do on a sleepless night, this might be the one you want to investigate.... - Escape Party - "The Crypt" & "Captain Kidd's Treasure"
Photo above is property of Escape Party Company: Escape Party Language: English Country: United Kingdom π¬π§ Type of Game: DIY Escape Kit βπ¨οΈ Time: Unlimited Size of Team: Unlimited Photo above is property of Escape Party Game: The Crypt Genre: Adventure Date Played: August 28, 2020 Difficulty (based on 2 players): 8.5/10 Price: Β£7.00 We've just entered an ancient crypt dated back to the early 20th century. As we decided to follow the steps of the great explorer Christian Stapleton and investigate this haunted crypt, the door closed behind us... After you purchase the game, you would receive 2 PDF files. One was the hint/answer sheet (also available on their website) and the other was the puzzle documents. We really only needed to print 3 -4 pages out of the entire PDF and since the graphics were in black and white, it didn't waste much ink at all. Most of the puzzles were all multi-step puzzles. Even though there were only 5 sets of puzzles, they were by no means easy to get through. We liked how the hint system was designed in a way where the player could chose how detailed they wanted the reveal to be. There were three levels of hint reveals: easy, medium and difficult. And if you still needed help after the final clue, you could use their detailed answer option. β Each puzzle set started off with an introduction story. Each time when we solved a puzzle, it felt like we've unlocked a door to go onto the next section. This definitely gave us an escape room vibe. It would've been great if the game had a recommended music playlist to go along with the creep catacomb atmosphere. If you like multi-step puzzles with pattern recognition, deduction, math etc., you'll need to pay a visit to "The Crypt". Gaining your composure, you reach for your torches and start to look around, there must be another way outβ¦ Photo above is property of Escape Party Photo above is property of Escape Party Game: Captain Kidd's Treasure Genre: Adventure Date Played: August 28, 2020 Difficulty (based on 2 players): 7/10 Price: Β£15.00 It's the year 1699 and we've found ourselves in Port Royal in the Caribbean islands. There we met up with Captain Kidd and he seemed to have stashed away a huge fortune somewhere. Hopefully we'll be able to find it and get out of this dangerous life of piracy forever! Video above is property of Escape Party Once the game is purchased, you'll receive PDF files instructing you on how to set up the game (as an escape room at your own home), hint website and color documents that you'll need to print out. Other than the written transcript, an intro video was also provided to start the party. The puzzles were embedded through the diary that Captain Kidd had left for us. As we go through crosswords, decryption, search and find, mazes, jigsaw, etc, we were ultimately led to the meta puzzle. Since the graphics revealed different types of locks, it made us feel like we were actually going through an escape room adventure. We didn't actually set up the "party" in our apartment but it could easily be done with the components the game had provided. The final puzzle was also quite interesting as it felt like a game on its own. Although this game is designed for kids, it was still quite challenging. This could be a fun competition for you and your kids to see who can solve the puzzles quicker! Photo above is property of Escape Party ** We regret to inform this company has closed its doors. Photo above is property of History Mystery Company: History Mystery Games: MI9: Evade & Escape Country: United Kingdom π¬π§ Language: English Type of Game: DIY Escape Kits π¨οΈβ Genre: War Date Played: January 25, 2021 Difficulty (based on 5 players): 6/10 Size of Team: Up to Logins (Suggested 2-6 players) Time: 90 Minutes (Approximately) Price: Β£14.99 (Including VAT), Print & Post (UK only) - Β£24.99 (Including VAT) ππ ·π ΄ πππ Ύππ You're trapped behind enemy lines but luckily you have been trained to evade capture by the special division MI9. By using the right tools and the help from the proper personnel, you'll be able to make it back home safely. Hopefully you won't be stumped by these puzzles ahead... ππ ·π ΄ π Άπ °π Όπ ΄ π Ώπ »π °π Once you've purchased the game, an instruction email will be send you. In the email, you'll find a link to a PDF (make sure you let your teammates know to save the file as there's a limit to the amount time you can download it) and a link to the game's online platform. Once you activate that link, you'll have only 24 hours to finish the game. It's best to prepare the paper materials prior to the start of the game. There were a good amount of pages you'll need to cut and assemble (sticky tape required). The login works for up to 6 players. The game is not synced so each player will have to enter their own password in order to move forward to the next segment of the game. It's best to set up a Zoom call with your group so you can keep each other informed and move forward together. There are audio components in the game so we suggest headphones if possible. The paper clues are to be used in conjunction with the website. The website is the main hub for entering solutions. There are puzzles that are independent from the paper clues but most of them will need the paper clues as well. You'll know which paper clue to use with which puzzle as they are clearly numbered on the online platform and on the PDF itself. ππ ·π ΄ π Ώππππ »π ΄π The puzzles worked really well with the storyline. The game started with us having to find a safe route to get out of our current location. There are various routes we would have to choose from but only the ones that avoided enemy detection was the right one to use. We also had to be in disguise and select only the most important tools to take with us on this journey. There were also various codes we had to decipher in order to receive the secret messages. It was quite genius the way the creators were able to make puzzles that were build on top of real history. We also enjoyed some of the cool visual reveals done by the construction of the paper clues. If you get stuck, there are build-in hints available on the online platform. Photos above are property of ESCAPETHEROOMers π ²π »π Ύππ Έπ ½π Ά ππ ·π Ύππ Άπ ·ππ The creators did a great job with the visuals and audio aspect of this game. It felt like we were taken back to the WWII era. MI9 was a secret department in the British military between 1939 and 1945. During WWII, it helped a lot of prisoners of war escape POW camps and return home to safety. This game really captured the history in the remaking. We loved learning about true events through the format of puzzles (only if my social study in high school was like this!) If you are a history lover and enjoy puzzling on the side, you'll really have a lot of fun with this adventure! πΌπβπΈβπΌπβπΌβπππππ£π€β β.π.π€β πππ π¦πππ₯π€ David M. MI9: Evade & Escape is a play at-home escape featuring a nice mix of digital and printable elements, both complementing each other very well. At times you are on the website looking for clues and listening to well recorded audio narration, but the big focus is all the printed pages with graphics and imagery that makes sense. There are pages where you have to cut out the images, and construct them into three dimensional structures. Not knowing how much time we needed to prepare, and do all the cutting caused a little sense of panic, but it was fine in the end. Despite the game feeling a bit long, where we escaped at the 90-minutes mark, all the interactive nature of the pintables and game play kept me interested. There was a huge variety of styles of puzzles, all of which gave a good challenge. Hovering over all of this is a history lesson of events during World War 2. The three different households solving this game as a team, it worked well over a video call. It was fun, great job! Jess A. & Matt L. Pros: This was our first print and play escape room and it was a great introduction History elements were accurate and interesting Following the route of an operative's escape was a clever narrative device and helped feel like we were moving forward in the game There was a good variety of puzzle types The bean tin decoder idea was great, loved the initial pun password idea Cons: Too much paper - felt like we were wasting trees and it was hard to keep it all organized. Some puzzles (the parachute, the bean tin, the flight path) were really great to have physically, but elements like the maps and the money would have been just as effective if they were incorporated into the digital elements. Some puzzles felt like there was more opportunity to be a puzzle rather then just clicking or circling answers No stats or information on time after you finish Disclosure: We thank History Mystery for providing us with samples of the game. It's a nice day at the park and that's where their adventure will begin... ππ ·π ΄ π Άπ °π Όπ ΄ π Ώπ »π °π Once you purchase the game, you'll receive a 18 page PDF in your email. If you want to have a full experience, feel free to print the entire packet (it's designed for grayscale so it won't use too much of your ink). If you want to save paper like we did, only 2 pages were really necessary as cutting was involved. There's 5 dialogue scenes paired with 5 puzzles. Since we played this over Zoom, we each picked a character (some of us picked two since we only had 4 people) and read the conversations out loud. It was a lot of fun especially the moment when Brandon realized how he should be portraying the character Dusty. If you want the least lines and sound like you have no idea what's going on, then Dusty is your guy! The final page of the PDF were hints and solutions printed in mirror image to avoid spoilers. Feel free to use that if you get stuck. Photo above is property of Enigmida ππ ·π ΄ π Ώππππ »π ΄π The puzzles were fairly easy for enthusiasts. Think of it more like a puzzle game made with intentions towards educational purposes rather than straight up puzzling. The game encourages discussions among friends and family on societies issues while playing the game. The first page has an area where you will record all the answers from each scene and where can check to see what the puzzles are looking for in terms of a solution. The puzzle that took us the longest to complete was the scene where we had to rearrange the Passover story since none of us were Jewish. It was nice to be able to learn about a culture while playing a game rather than reading a thick textbook. We still enjoyed the variations in puzzle types and the cute hand drawn graphics that went along with each of them. The final multi-step puzzle was a nice way to conclude the chapter. π ²π »π Ύππ Έπ ½π Ά ππ ·π Ύππ Άπ ·ππ We haven't seen a game that incorporates history, culture and social messages all in one game before. For someone who is not familiar with Passover, we had some unexpected joyful moments. The issues that the game touched on (community solidarity, climate justice, indigenous activism, mutual aid, and Jewish anti-racism) were just some of the problems we face as a society today. It was great to be able to see the game designers at Enigmida come up with such clever ways to build awareness through the medium of puzzles and narratives. The art itself also subliminally bought out the fact that kids are the future and we must take actions today if we want changes tomorrow! πΌπβπΈβπΌπβπΌβπππππ£π€ βππ₯π£π πβπ€ πππ π¦πππ₯π€ Helen B. I love print and solve games and this was slightly different to those I have played before in that there was no accompanying website to read or watch or add answers to. Having read through the PDF for the game it was clear that really you can get away with printing pages 5, 6, 13 and 14 if you want to be frugal with paper and ink. Considering one of the puzzles is heavily linked to being environmentally friendly I would have thought this should be mentioned in the instructions! I am lucky that I have a tablet I can draw onto PDFs with so that gave me some benefit, but really you could get away with just using one sheet of paper and a pencil to solve most if not all of the puzzles. There are 5 puzzles to solve in all, 4 main ones and a meta puzzle. They each take a theme from the foundations of being a good citizen and human being, and there are lots of discussion points to make this a learning experience for young people. Our team of 4 took on one or 2 of the characters each and read the story which was a nice way to make the experience a bit more complete, and then solved the puzzles together. It was a nice variety of puzzles albeit only a small amount. A very enjoyable half an hour with some lovely moral messages of being kind and sharing within communities. "Pirate's Quest" would be a great solution. This game was designed for kids (ages 10-14) but we enjoy feeling "super smart" from time to time. When you purchase the game, a PDF file will be emailed to you immediately. If you don't have a printer, it's doable without it. The colorful graphics immediately got our attention. On this journey, we were set out to find John Harding's (a notorious pirate) treasure. We recognized many types of puzzles we would see in adult games (ciphers, unscramble, directional, etc...) but just shortened and made easier for kids. It's a great way to train them young on becoming great puzzlers. Even with a kids game, the creators were able to embed a meta puzzle at the end. The hint system was very clear and were given in stages. In case you wanted to check an answer but didn't want spoilers for the others, they have written them backwards. It's great that the creators were able to pay attention to these little details. We can't wait to see what puzzle game they'll come out with for adults soon as we know the creators are avid puzzlers themselves. They even have amazing physical escape room called "The Other Tales" in NJ, USA! There was only one place you'll need to use a scissor. The game has 3 chapters and an epilogue. Each chapter contained a number of puzzles. You'll know it's a puzzle because it'll have a unique symbol. Each puzzle's solution is a word. You can check the answers as you go. There's two ways to check the answers. Gatekeeper was a printable "escape room" or "puzzle quest" which is one of my favourite types due to the slow pace, ability for everyone to work on the puzzles themselves and quite often the amazing artwork involved. Gatekeeper is no exception. The artwork is incredible, and has a very magical, ethereal theme, with crystals, potions, keys and planets to contend with. A nice mix of 10 or so very different puzzles - we made our way through them slowly but steadily, enjoying the cleverness of the puzzles and how the keys come together, resulting in a sort of meta-puzzle at the end. Every puzzle was very satisfactory, and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. You really only need to print a few of the pages out of the large pack, so read everything first as it will tell you how to do the minimal printing option, to save paper, ink and the planet! Both games are played in a non-linear style which is what you would want with a party game so everyone can be working on something. When playing "Escape from Jigsaw Island", we set up the game like an escape room for the kids, which is one of the recommended ways to play. We had the final βVictoryβ locked in a box with a 3-digit code and hid the puzzles around the room where they would have to search for them. They loved playing this and immersing themselves into the story. One thing we really like about these games was after purchasing them, they also include the picture files to the theme and puzzles. This allows you to create additional puzzles that match the theme or personalize the one that is already there for an even more unique experience. You would also be able to decorate and create a party around the theme of the game. ππ ·π ΄ π Ώππππ »π ΄π For adults, the puzzles were not overly complicated, but we did find them to be accurate to the age range recommended. We were able to play Jigsaw Island with the kids (aged 6 and 8) where they would take the lead while the adults gave nudges in the background if needed. While playing Mr. George, the adults did more of the game play with the kids helping out here and there. There were a good mix of puzzles, with some requiring more time and effort than others. Before you start the game, you have to print out a small packet of 9 pages (color and cutting will not be needed in this game) and it will give you the tools you need to solve each puzzle. The graphics and images on the print out were large and easy to read, and each were labeled well so that the players knew what information was needed. This game takes place on a single webpage and the only other tab one would need open is for a search browser. The system is simplistic, the graphics are clear, and each step is well choreographed so those with limited computer knowledge should have no issues playing this game. It took the two of us 1 hour and 18 minutes to complete the game. Photo above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers ππ ·π ΄ π Ώππππ »π ΄π As with most online escape rooms, the players must have a fun time with the puzzles as well as the overarching story. It is safe to say that the puzzles in "The Ultimate Heist" are well thought out, logical, and innovative. For the nine puzzles provided in the game, each one was unique and used a different skill set. Some solutions needed to be deduced by logic, others by spatial reasoning, and geographical know how. Not all of the information in this game is common knowledge and there will be some searching through the web for clarifications. π ²π »π Ύππ Έπ ½π Ά ππ ·π Ύππ Άπ ·ππ True Clue came up with a wonderful game that is sure to delight those puzzle solvers and others looking for an adventure. The storyline made sense in what we were doing and the riddles backed up those actions. The biggest fall back unfortunately was some puzzles not connecting mechanically to the story world. This though, should not detract from the high quality of the game. As you travel through this game you will uncover the crucial role this machine had on World War Two and learn about the other famous counterparts who contributed to the enormous efforts of breaking the code. Can you solve this enigma, or will you also be left in the dark? Photo above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers ππ ·π ΄ π Άπ °π Όπ ΄ π Ώπ »π °π "The Enigma Code" is a Print-n-Play game designed by True Clue. For this game, you will need a coloured printer, a pair of scissors, a pen/pencil and a device with internet access. Only one page, in particular, requires cutting while another requires colour identification. There is a website that you will be using throughout the game to guide you through the puzzles as well as provide the narrative history of the enigma machine. The game takes places over 10 clues that are unlocked with every solution β the printed sheets are labelled their clue numbers for easy reference, but some clues do not require printed sheets as the pertinent information is on the website. This game is a linear puzzle solving experience and the online content will provide key details to help you solve. They also contain hints if you require them. It is important to note multiple attempts to submit and incorrect puzzle solution will lock you out from submitting another answer for 3 minutes. Outside research will also be required for some of the puzzling through easy googling about certain topics. ππ ·π ΄ π Ώππππ »π ΄π The puzzles for "The Enigma Code" were a mix of easy and hard. They include logic, math, cipher breaking, and more. I particularly enjoyed the use of logic puzzles in the experience as they worked well for collaborative puzzle playing. They allowed for quick assigning of roles in order to divide and conquer the puzzles. In addition, I couldnβt help but really appreciate some of the ideas around the puzzles. Even the math puzzle, which usually Iβm not a fan of math, I appreciated the technique. Every puzzle provided an opportunity for a different type of puzzler to shine. This showed a thoughtful insight into creating puzzles with a nice twist to them. I also really liked how well the story of the enigma code was broken up with each reveal of the next clue. They tied things well together and gave a sense of reward as we played. This game definitely allows for players with a variety of strengths to come together and solve puzzles. At the same time, we found some of the puzzles swung quite wide between easy and hard. The final puzzle, as a result, was slightly anticlimactic and the cipher puzzle is one that some of my team is still struggling to wrap out head around. In some cases things became a little tedious because of the flip flopping. I recommend not being afraid to take few hints to help yourself along for those more challenging puzzles. π ²π »π Ύππ Έπ ½π Ά ππ ·π Ύππ Άπ ·ππ "The Enigma Code" is a fun collaborative code breaking experience for players to work together on. With the added historical narrative, each solution gives you a real sense of satisfaction as well as ties the puzzling to the real-world events. If you enjoy history, are always looking for good collaborative puzzles, and want a game that can be done in a single evening, then this is a great option! Time is ticking... ππ ·π ΄ π Άπ °π Όπ ΄ π Ώπ »π °π This is a print-n-cut game paired with an online interface. You'll start the game by preparing all the items that you'll need to print and cut first. You can do that as you play the game but it'll make the play time much longer. Once you are done with the preparation, you can start the game on the designated website. There'll be an video intro of the backstory, a clear instruction on password input and information on how to navigate the online interface. It was pretty easy to use and we really enjoyed the build-in hint system. If you want to play the hard mode, you won't know how many digits or letters the password would require. If you merely needed that bit, there's a separate tab to allow you to only look at that information. If you need further assistance, there's nudging hints available on a separate tab. The interface also informs you clearly on which pages you'll need for a certain puzzle. We think this is quite important in print-n-cut games as you'll be overwhelmed by the amount of clues especially with all the cut outs. ππ ·π ΄ π Ώππππ »π ΄π The puzzles were very creative for a print-n-cut game. There were times when we were making 3D models, visualizing things from different perspectives, strategizing escape routes and more! It had just the right amount of mixture of easy and hard puzzles. We would fly through a few and be stumped on one. I would definitely recommend using hints as some puzzles were quite difficult and without hints we were unable to proceed forward. My favorite puzzles were the tactile ones where you could physically utilize the papers to form various shapes or images that you wouldn't normally detect. Once everything was in its right place, that's when the magic revealed itself. This is hard to do on paper but Escape Quest Queenstown did give us a few good "reveals" throughout the game. π ²π »π Ύππ Έπ ½π Ά ππ ·π Ύππ Άπ ·ππ I love when history is recreated with games. In this game, you get a glimpse of what life was like back in the 1860s through puzzles rather than a boring history book. You can tell Escape Quest Queenstown put a lot of work into making this happen. If you get a chance to visit them in Queenstown, you can play their in-person escape room "Gold Heist in the Gold Rush", which is the same theme this game was based on! We hope we get to return back to New Zealand in the near future. It's such a beautiful country! πΌπβπΈβπΌπβπΌβπππππ£π€β β.π.π€β πππ π¦πππ₯π€ Helen B. I have now tried a few different types of online escape game with ESCAPETHEROOMers, but not yet a print-and-play one, so I was excited to try something new. We had to print about 12 pages of A4 and hubby and I spent a happy 10 minutes cutting out the elements in advance. The graphics were good quality and looked interesting and varied. We began our adventure with a recorded video that contained a clue so listen carefully :) Answers are entered into a website and confirmed by submission, if you're incorrect it tells you and if correct you get to move on. We then solved a relatively easy picture puzzle - I think the game warms you up nicely into puzzle-solving mode. The next puzzle involved some of our cutouts, and this one had us scratching our heads for a while. What we had missed was the "Fold instructions" which were in plain sight on the page, and whilst we had guessed how to put it together already, the instructions did confirm something else which helped us. However despite it being a funky papercraft - the answer eluded us and we had to go through the hints which didn't give us much we didn't know, but finally gave us the nudge we needed to solve it, after a long time wondering! I do feel this one could have been designed to be a little clearer. The play flows nicely, with little bits of story woven in to give context, and the next puzzle - again after reading the fold instructions, was really neat and probably one of the best in the pack. The remaining puzzles were solved, some quickly, some with a bit more head-scratching, but all in all they provided a good level of difficulty and variety. I found that all having your own printed materials and just one person entering codes/answers on a website while we all watched worked really well and fast became my favourite type because you have something other than just clicking around a screen to do, whilst all solving simultaneously. There was much group collaboration and chat on what to do with the various paper parts as well as the puzzles, which was also more relaxed than games with a time-limit. We emerged victorious after a challenging but enjoyable 2 hours! I am keen to try more printable escape games now! loved the theme of old-world gold rush and when we get to New Zealand in future I hope we can get to visit the company's real rooms! Mike S. This game is created and takes place in New Zealand. That should be a main idea when solving the puzzles in this set. One does not need to have been to New Zealand but it does help to be familiar with the countries and the phrases. This caught the US people off guard and while we were able to figure it out, there was luckily another person on our team from the UK who could help us out with some of the phrasing they use. With that said, the puzzles in this set are hard. Having four people on our team, it took us around two hours to complete. There were some logic leaps that, after getting clues from the accompanying site, the team was able to solve. A minor gripe that I had was that the solution the puzzle was looking for was sometimes never stated. An example of this included puzzles looking for number digits then another that was looking for an actual word, and other solves looking for a string of letters and numbers of varying lengths. This made our inputs for the solutions seem more like a guess than an actual answer. (Update 3/31/21: The company has taken this feedback and added an attached insert into the βNumber of Characters for Codeβ TAB to help narrow down the range of possibilities/difficulty level for each puzzle) The story of this game created a ponderous journey. There was plenty of background in this game about the history of New Zealand and itβs gold rush. All of that information though, was needed to fit into the wide variety of puzzles that encompassed this game. It was a long journey that the team was sent on and the way the game was set up felt like a point to point adventure, rather than a developing storyline based upon your solves in the game. The quality of the game and the product you get is a great representation that should be expected in a print n play game. All of the pages that were printed out came out in clear images and there wasn't much of an issue discerning the information on the page. Please note, there is a good amount of cutting pieces out of the packet in this game, you can cut them before you start the game which I would recommend. Overall, it was a mixed bag that leaned on the harder side of puzzle games that I have played. I will give the designer credit, some of the actions needed to solve puzzles are unique and quite inventive. There is no penalty for using clues and hints and it would be beneficial for the group to do so if they get stuck during the game. If your group is looking for a challenging evening of solving a variety of puzzles (both physical and mental) check this game out and see if itβs the right game for you. The tape can be optional and, while not all pages need to be printed for cutting, printing out the pages does make using the AR easier. After purchase you will be provided with a website that will introduce the game in more detail as well as be your guide throughout the experience. It will provide an anecdote of the story along with details about which paper clues are relevant, hints, and solutions. I particularly liked how they had a section that would tell you the number of characters in the puzzle solution in order to have a better idea of what you were looking for. The AR app provides a 360-degree view of various important objects and works in conjunction with the puzzle pages it is associated with so make sure to look at both the original page and the view through the AR. Volume does play a part in the game so make sure to have the volume on. Not all puzzles require AR and I recommend looking at each page with the AR before you start the puzzle to ensure you have all you need. The AR does need to be moved around and zoomed in at times to ensure you have viewed all clues. This experience is a linear experience as the website keeps you in line. No outside research is necessary to play. Photos above are property of Escape Quest Queenstown ππ ·π ΄ π Ώππππ »π ΄π The puzzles for "Empire Escape" is more focused on searching for clues than traditional puzzles. The AR app provides a refreshing avenue to explore the searching mechanic and it was a blast turn looking around the page for clues. The solutions themselves were a mix of related words to the game but there were quite a few number solutions that didnβt feel very connected to the story. This wasnβt very hard a game but make sure you are looking around carefully as you search for clues as some things are quite easy to miss. One thing of note was the disconnect between the goal of the game and the puzzle solutions. There were a few times where I questioned how this puzzle solution actually achieved finding Garrett or what did it reveal. In this frame of mind, the puzzles take the forefront over the story. The history acts more for creating a theme for the game. π ²π »π Ύππ Έπ ½π Ά ππ ·π Ύππ Άπ ·ππ "Empire Escape" was a wonderful experience with its AR application and sense of historical intrigue. You'll need to have a printer (preferably color), a scissor and a Facebook account. The theme of the game was build around 80's computer games. When we found a mysterious old console in the attic, we released a virus by accident. Now it's up to us to beat the virus one level at a time until we shut it down for good! We loved the graphic design of the game packet but it does use a lot of ink (and they are expensive!). At the beginning of the game, you will be informed on which pages are must prints. I would advise looking over the puzzles and seeing which ones have to be printed in color and which ones could be printed in black and white. We printed the entire packet in black and white and just hand wrote in the colors and it worked out fine. It would be great if all the printable game designers could keep this in mind while designing the game. The puzzles were created in a way that every one of them reminded us of a video game we've played in the 80s. It was nice to be able to feel like we're playing the actual game just by visualizations. If you are a good hacker/decoder, you'll have a lot of fun with some of the puzzles. If you have kids, we would definitely recommend printing the game in color. Printable puzzles/escapes are pretty much my favourite type after physical boxes through the mail, as you actually get to handle and manipulate items for real rather than just clicking around on a screen. Solving them together over zoom etc or just with family is a great way to spend some time. I loved the theme of Alice in Wonderland for this one, and the document itself is a beauty to behold. Amazing illustrations and colours. I wouldn't blame you printing the lot, if you want to stay screen free, but if you're happy to do the rest on screen then you only need to print 3 of the total pages. If you have a device that allows you to draw on documents like a touchscreen, you will have an edge here. I didn't read the instructions properly but luckily my teammates did. You don't work through each age in a linear progression so do make sure to follow the instructions carefully. There was a lovely variety of puzzles, all which point you via the answer to the next location (page) - and the next puzzle. The difficulty was fairly low (but not all too easy), so this would be a great game for families or newbies to the genre, but we enjoyed them even so. A nice mix of logic, wordplay and physical manipulation that kept us engaged and enchanted. The final puzzle is so clever and really gave us a pleasant surprise and feeling of satisfaction.
