Photo above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE Personally, I think time travel is a really fun theme and it was implemented well here. We definitely felt the futuristic vibe and were concerned about how our actions might affect other timelines! We got to read an entire comic book explaining the backstory before the game began! It sounds like sometimes this is just discovered during the game, which could be a challenge since it takes a while to read (I know I’m not the only one who rarely has the patience to read long story components when the clock is ticking!). However, it was a fantastic setup for the game to be able to read it at a leisurely pace before we began, and helped to really provide a more in-depth backstory than you typically get. There were no padlocks in this game, with lots of tech integration, which was definitely in line with the technologically-advanced theming. Everything worked smoothly, and some of my teammates particularly enjoyed getting to use one of the props at the end! In terms of the puzzles, there was a nice flow with options for group members to be working on several puzzles simultaneously, as well as some places where teamwork is required. There were plenty of tactile interactions and those satisfying moments when things clicked and you realized exactly what something meant! There is a great mechanism that gives you a nice "a-ha moment!" part way through the game. It is very on-theme and also provides a good opportunity for team communication/collaboration. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Although there is the really cool comic book backstory that provides a lot of context, the way the story plays out in the game admittedly has a few holes. Yet, this is something I thought about later, in contemplating this review. I definitely didn’t care about it when we were playing, as I was fully engaged and having a blast! In discussions with the owner, a change in the story (that introduces this inconsistency) was made to improve the player experience, and I can totally see why. We accidentally opened a door to the hallway, which dispelled a bit of the immersion. It would be great to find a thematic way to tell players not to open that door (except in case of emergency). 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? If you are looking for a well-themed game with lots of tech and that classic escape room feel, "Time Travel: Project 'Ex Machine'” will be right up your alley! While some of the puzzles are a bit tougher, there are some that would be good for more experienced kids/families and nothing too scary (though, some of their other rooms are specifically geared towards those groups)! We had a blast tackling this mission, and really appreciated some of the cool design elements. I absolutely loved the artwork and aesthetics, and there was engaging audio of various characters from the book. The gameplay itself reinforced the light and silly feel appropriate to the theme and the look. While it is a minor component, there is a sign stating “Be the Alice that you want to be” with a number of portraits of possible “Alices.” The individuals are of different genders and ethnicities, and one has tattoos. While, of course, they cannot cover the full spectrum of various forms of diversity, I loved this inclusion and effort to embrace and welcome all types of players (particularly in a room geared towards younger folks)! This room is truly multi-sensory! There are all kinds of puzzles, including more standard puzzles that focus on sight and touch, but also those incorporating smell and sound! 🧩 MISSED THE MARK While it was sometimes obvious, at other times it was unclear if or where something may have opened in the room. I always appreciate when I know for sure if we succeeded and, if so, what happened in response. Since this is a single room game, and you have access to most things as soon as you enter, it felt like a very non-linear game with a lot going on at once (as it turns out, it is actually more linear than we initially thought, so pay attention and think about the order to approach the puzzles)! This did give the room a slightly chaotic feel. Personally, I really enjoyed the slight mayhem and felt like it was on-theme! However, in combination with the bold and colorful set and audio components, one of my teammates did feel like it was sometimes a bit of sensory overload and a bit overstimulating (they certainly still enjoyed the room overall!). So, something to be mindful of if this is something someone in your group is sensitive to. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? Whether you are an "Alice in Wonderland" fan or just want to embrace your inner kid, "Alice" is a light and fun game that is sure to bring smiles and laughs! The owner describes it as a bit more of an “arcade” style game, where there can be lots to keep groups of kids occupied at once, but they all get to stay together in the one room. This would definitely be great for teens and families, as well as adults who enjoy a little whimsy in their rooms. Conundroom Escape Rooms does a fantastic job setting the scene for this one, starting right from the elaborately decorated waiting area and sweeping on into the game itself. The first room in particular I found super charming. You will definitely feel like you have been transported back in time to embark on a train journey (at a time when they were way classier than an Amtrak)! In comparison to their other room, this one had more physical locks in ways that were very on-theme, while still having quite a bit of tech. In terms of the puzzles, there were two aspects that are fairly common in escape rooms, but that they were implemented in particularly fun and interesting ways. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK For those who really value narrative, the game has a classic sort of escape room theme, but minimal backstory and story progression. While we enjoyed some of the puzzles in this game, there were some that felt less satisfying due to being left incomplete or just feeling like they had slightly more ambiguous answers. Holmes, you find yourself entering the once beautiful Grand Wilshire Hotel. Owned by the infamous Dr. Herman Mudgett, his killing spree finally came to a close in these halls after leaving behind a trail of bodies in Chicago during the World’s Fair and the Whitechapel District in London… but not without leaving a mark. His ghost resides here in the hotel, tormenting the innocent souls of his last three victims. You realize that only you can save them from this hellscape…but time is ticking and you only have an hour before Mudgett traps you in the hotel alongside the poor souls desperate to be free. There are exquisite details that truly immerse you in the hotel coupled with special effects that move the journey along. The story and premise felt cohesive and well connected to the room. The puzzles range from observation, logic, and pattern recognition. I enjoyed how much they utilise the space and encourage players to move around. No corner was forgotten and a careful eye is richly rewarded. Puzzles are a mix of traditional locks and well situated game mechanics that blended well into the story. The reveals were well timed and gave many an “aha” moments as solutions to puzzles provided vital clues leading back to other rooms. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK The ending felt a little anticlimactic after all the build up. Not necessarily a missed the mark but this game is on the easier side. Experience players will be able to complete this game in half the time allotted. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? "The Grand Wilshire Hotel " is a beautiful and immersive experience that puts you right in the mood to solve spooky puzzles. The premise sets a good tone and the room itself challenges you to fully explore the space. Groups that divide and conquer are rewarded with moments of “aha” as you make connections between puzzles and my group was constantly running around in excitement. I would recommend this for players who love easy, clean puzzle cluing, beautiful set design, and a fun atmosphere. Video above is property of The Imaginarium 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The amount of space that this escape room takes up was astonishing. As we continued through the experience, the rooms continued to get grander and grander. This was an amazing set to journey through. Right from the start, the initial space was set up to immerse us into the experience. Finding and using so many high quality props, there were so many great puzzles to go with them. The puzzles fit into the theme and worked flawlessly into the story. There was also a nice build up of difficulty for the puzzles. The puzzles were all designed large enough that it was easier to complete them with multiple hands and allowed everyone to be involved. The Imaginarium was able to turn a puzzle that is normally frustrating into a well clued, thought out puzzle. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK This was a solid game and an absolute pleasure to play. Nothing stood out as a miss here. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? "The Wrath of Amun Ra" was a fantastic escape room to experience. As we journeyed through the game, the rooms and puzzles continued to get grander and grander. The puzzles fit well into the theme, and everyone was able to get involved with them all. We played with 4 enthusiasts but found that we could easily fit a few more and still have a great time. This room would be enjoyed by people who love a great set, puzzles that require a team or anyone who loves the Egyptian theme. A meteor is hurtling towards our home planet, and we must enable the station’s weapons to deflect it before it is too late but as you work to unlock the systems, you’ll uncover even greater threats lurking in the depths of space. 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE This room combines the Microsoft Hololens 2 Goggles and a physical environment, which Imaginarium did a fantastic job of blending the virtual and physical together. Most puzzles required a combination of both virtual and physical elements to solve which were seamless in design. The room kept everyone involved, either with large collaborative puzzles, nonlinear challenges where everyone could work on their own or team based tasks that required everyone doing their part. The physical set design was beautifully crafted and full of details with some fun props but added in with the virtual portion, it all tied together to look spectacular. The GM was very thorough at setting up the Hololens goggles for us at the start, walking us through the whole process of wearing them and how to use the technology. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK There was a task that could be difficult to complete for some, that only one person could work on at a time. This could cause some bottle necking in the game. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This was the first time experiencing an escape room with a mix of physical and virtual components and it far exceeded my expectations. The immersion was brought to a new level with the virtual characters and hints. The puzzles were creative and made fantastic use of both, the physical and virtual. Even in the physical space, there were still some fun surprises. With four players, the experience felt just right. Any less and it would have increased the difficulty of the room. This game is perfect for anyone who is looking for an immersive adventure, a fun space theme game or just something new to try with the Hololens technology. Just locate the stapler and put it back in its rightful place. How could anything even remotely magical possibly happen in a place so drab and boring and devoid of anything interesting? Hmmmmmm. 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE This is a modern room in every sense of the word. It utilizes a variety of technological elements in creative, delightful ways that both advance the story and keep participants on their toes. The playful nature of this room is undeniable. It initially presents as the most boring scene imaginable, and slowly unfolds into a unique blend of painfully drab and beautifully magical. Each player has a distinct role, ensuring that everybody has tasks to fulfill and their time to shine. The attention to detail was impressive. One challenge in particular required the integration of multiple components obtained over time, and all the information required to succeed could be rediscovered with ease. Some elements' difficulty can be surreptitiously tailored in real time by the GM, based on the success and enjoyment of the team at that point in the experience. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Given the location in Salem, MA, the target audience is families and tourists, so the puzzles themselves aren't intended to require intense thought. Experienced players may be able to move through quickly enough that they're left wanting more! One specific task could've been tightened up to prevent confusion over exactly how it had been solved. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This room positively sparkles! The whimsical nature was right up our alley, and there’s excellent tech and creativity. Outside of people who want nothing but brain-busting puzzles, it is a room that almost any one will find enchanting. Kids and families will have a blast! Friends will enjoy the teamwork required, and co-workers will find it refreshing, as well as appreciate the not-so-subtle nods to a few characters and moments from The Office and Office Space. Leave your inner curmudgeon at the door, and let yourself be transported by the first creation from Stained Hourglass. We had seven people all together (Normally the room fits a max of 6 but they allowed an extra person for us that day). It was pretty cool for them to put a puzzle at the door for us to solve in order to enter, but for some reason it was malfunctioning on that day. The waiting area was quite clean and open with a few puzzle pieces for you to enjoy while waiting. After the previous group finished, the resetting of the "Red Riding Hood" room took quite awhile on that day as we were delayed about 1/2 hour before we can start our game. The flow of the rooms were amazing and provided an extremely immersive experience. The puzzles were not that difficult but kept everyone busy as there were things to be searched for but also thing to be solved. The props appeared to look "real" in a few occasions. This is probably one of the best rooms we've played so far in terms of the amount of puzzles, the flow of the story, and the set design itself. Our experience at Number One Escape Room has set the bar for all the other places. We will definitely return to try their other rooms when back in Vegas! After finally discovering the secret entrance, you gather up your bravest friends to sneak a peek inside this mysterious house... Photo above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The introduction video was pretty creative and felt like a Broadway musical (we just felt like it could be cut a little shorter since the "rules" video was also quite long). "Witch House" was cleverly constructed as a standalone set design right in the middle of their lobby. We weren't sure about the noise level or how immersive it would be for a small space. But once we entered the room, we completely forgot where we were. The space transported us into a whimsical, magical land of witchery. The storyline felt like a " Hansel and Gretel " fairy tale, but with a unique twist. As you enter, your curiosity gets the best of you and you can't help but touch everything in your sight. There was so much attention to detail from the props (names of different witches) to the colorful lighting to the ominous music, which all contributed to enhance the overall experience. We did enjoy the various types of "triggers" that the room provided once we've successfully solved something. Whether it be a special effect (i.e. fog) or a light-up animation. They were a lot more entertaining than just regular locks and keys. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK This might just be a comment coming from enthusiasts who have played hundreds of games before but we felt that the puzzles were on the easier side where a good amount of them felt like "following directions" to press something instead of actually solving a logic or deduction puzzle. The ending could use some enhancement as we weren't sure if we had completed our task. When we came out of the room (the GM wasn't there to greet us), we had to run to the front desk to check if we were done. It might be because of where the "exit" was located but we suggest adding something in that room to signify a victory. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? This is the 3rd game that we played at Black Cats Number One Escape Room. When we first visited back in 2018 to play " Red Riding Hood ", it was the 6th game that we ever played and it raised the bar for what we thought good solid escape rooms could be. In 2019, we played " The Cabin " which also delivered an enjoyable experience. But "Witch House" is now our favorite at their location and we can see the direction they are heading towards. Every time we come back, they have surprised us with new game qualities that are keeping up with the current market. A storm is approaching their way and they finally discovered a cabin deep within the woods. From approaching on to the porch to inside the wooden cabin, we felt fully immersed in the atmosphere. The sound system was great too. There were no live actors in the room but due to the design of the room, we constantly thought someone was in there with us or there was a pair of eyes “watching”. We felt jumpy every time when lighting and thunder hit. The story was told through the puzzles and had a nice flow. Another special lighting effect during the latter part of the game gave me goose bumps when it happened. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK We escaped not knowing that we were outside the room already. But we got confused because we didn’t open a certain lock yet, so we thought the game didn’t end yet. The game master came in and congratulated us. She said we didn’t need to solve that particular puzzle and can still escape. That was very confusing to us. We were never explained prior to going into the room that there was a bonus puzzle. So, since we had plenty of time left when we “escaped”, we went back in and continued to play until we solved the bonus puzzle. This is the first time we escaped and went back in to continue to play the game.  A clearer conclusion would be great.   We were able to get out of the room quite quickly. We felt like we wanted to be in there longer to enjoy the beautiful set design. If the level of difficulty could be adjusted for different types of groups that would be great.   🏹 TAKE A SHOT? If you enjoy immersive room designs and are a horror fan, get a group of brave souls together and give this room a try. Our recommended size for this room is 2-4 people. This is our second time back at Number One Escape Room. Red Riding Hood was one of our very first rooms when we started playing escape rooms and we loved it. It became evident that we had become part of the killer's twisted game when he revealed that we had fallen into his trap. The unsettling atmosphere, lighting effects, and the sinister shed setting all worked together to create a chilling opening scene reminiscent of a horror movie. The set design undergoes significant changes throughout this experience. At times, we found ourselves questioning whether we were still inside a shed or exploring a hidden passageway. We encountered innovative gameplay elements that were unique compared to other games. Additionally, the cleverly designed entryways and exits, coupled with subtle jump scares, added to the overall thrill of the experience. If time allows, the team can tackle a bonus puzzle as an additional challenge after your escape. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK We attempted to use a particular input for a device several times and questioned the reason for using that method instead of another. It would be helpful to have this clarified. Having a message from the killer in the finale would be advantageous as we managed to escape, providing a final closing statement. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? In the thrilling sequel to The Cabin , our group found ourselves confronted with the menacing presence of the killer once more. The sense of foreboding was palpable as we wondered what twisted game he had in store for us this time. Each challenge seemed to be meticulously designed to push us to our limits, with puzzles that were even more intricate and demanding than those we encountered in The Cabin. The atmosphere was suffused with an eerie tension, punctuated by heart-stopping jump scares that left us on edge at every turn. It was as if we had been plunged into a real-life horror movie, with the killer orchestrating our every move like a malevolent puppeteer. Do you possess the strength, cunning, and sheer willpower to break free from the clutches of this deranged sadist? Talk about shaking things up! This game really puts teamwork to the test in the beginning, but fear not - soon enough you'll get to divide and conquer in the later part of the game. Let's talk about the decor - it was a psychedelic explosion of fun and colors! I mean, who needs reality when you can escape into a world of funky vibes and groovy hues? Not sure anyone would want to escape this prison? We stumbled upon some seriously cool hidden compartments during the game. If you're a pro and finish the game early, there's a bonus puzzle waiting for you! 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Assisting one team from another can be challenging, as if an outside teammate struggles with a puzzle, it can cause delays for several other teammates who's locked up in the cell. Offering a "tool" to allow all teammates to collaborate and contribute to the main area puzzles could be beneficial. After successfully breaking out of prison, we were uncertain whether we had found Suzy's cocaine since there were no clear indications in the room. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? The unique storyline of the game perfectly complemented a Vegas vibe. This is a highly engaging and interactive game that is perfect for groups who enjoy fostering communication and collaboration among team members. Participants are presented with ample opportunities to engage in a thrilling "search and find" adventure, with a special emphasis on uncovering hidden items within the game setting. Photo above is property of ESCAPETHEROOMers 🎯 HIT THE BULLSEYE The plot revolved around the concept of the 7 deadly sins, and the creator had some brilliant concepts for integrating puzzles related to each sin. To escape, we had to solve them all. We encountered a variety of puzzle types that required us to use different tools and our senses to find the solutions. The challenge of being restrained (albeit in comfortable handcuffs, with the freedom to move around within limits) and having to rely only on what we could access while seated was challenging but rewarding. There were moments when we particularly enjoyed the visual revelations. The final prop provided a clever exit strategy for us to leave the room. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK We were informed that there should have been music playing in the room, but we did not hear any. It might be necessary to investigate this issue as having music could enhance the tension of the kidnapping. There were a couple of puzzles in the game that we felt needed more steps to reach the final solution. Towards the end, there was one in particular where we believed the instructions on the input order could be added. For enthusiasts, this room might appear relatively easy, and even with the bonus puzzle, we managed to escape quickly. It could be beneficial to introduce a hard mode for experienced players with additional puzzles. Based on the plot, solving the bonus puzzle was supposed to reveal the perpetrator, but we never received that information. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? We have not had many opportunities to explore games specifically designed for two players. The most recent instance where we immersed ourselves in a similar activity was with " The Shed ", a game that caters to up to four players. What stood out to us the most was being able to remain seated throughout the entire experience, with all the necessary clues and materials within easy reach. This setup fostered a sense of teamwork as we navigated through the challenges together. There were instances where effective communication and the sharing of information became crucial, especially when one of us overlooked a crucial detail. The narrative centered around the 7 deadly sins, coupled with the intricately designed puzzles that tied into this theme, truly elevated our enjoyment and engagement with the game. We thoroughly enjoyed the physical puzzle in this game, as it felt like a genuine escape scenario where we needed to find something crucial to help us break free. The storyline was captivating, inspired by "Death Note," and they skillfully embodied the character. The character was genuinely helpful in the game, aligning with the "Death Note" persona, who wasn't entirely evil. 🧩 MISSED THE MARK Certain props require some updating. The storyline lacked cohesion, as we struggled to connect the initial set design with the later parts of the game. We knew what we were looking for, but the purpose was unclear. The ending seemed abrupt. We didn't realize the game had concluded, as the action we took didn't clearly lead to a noticeable outcome. Incorporating some eerie music would have significantly enhanced the scenarios. We were instructed by our GM to interact with a character at the start, but the opportunity to do so never arose, which led to confusion. 🏹 TAKE A SHOT? If you love jump scares and a gameplay experience shrouded in darkness, this thrilling adventure is perfect for you. The puzzles are manageable, but solving them while feeling a sense of danger adds an exciting challenge. Fans of the Japanese anime "Death Note" will likely notice some inspired elements in the game.
